An Autumnal Open Letter For All

Over the years I have often been told that I don’t communicate enough, open up enough, for people. Well, there are things that I only share with God, as it should be for all of us. There are things I keep to myself, as they aren’t fit for conversation. Yet, I agree, I must learn how often to communicate. It is something we all must learn in our lives. This includes all forms of communication, writing, and speaking. Who do we talk to? How often do we talk? What do we talk about? These are some interesting things to consider, and Scripture discusses them all in many ways. I wasn’t going to start off my first week back with this particular consideration, but one or two, perhaps more of our members have brought this thought of communication up in various ways. So, this letter goes out not just to our membership, but to all. This is my first open letter to all for the last week of my sabbatical. We’ll start here in Galatians 6:6 KJV – Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.
The Word must be taught, before we can teach each other. Our innermost thoughts, feelings and more must be learned and thought over before we can discuss them. It is no simple task when we suffer something that could be devastating, and then put that in words for others to understand, until we ourselves understand it. Yet, our thoughts and words shouldn’t be stopped unless they are the wrong words to say. This is something shared here in I Timothy 6:18 KJV – For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
It takes work to communicate, and when we need to, want to, we shouldn’t be gagged, prevented from doing so. Let us learn how to communicate, in a good and constructive way, each of us. Whether we are Christian or not, communication is a vital consideration. Yes, it takes practice, and some of us need more of that than others. There are no exceptions in this ideal, whether you are one of the greatest speakers or you are the one in the corner who says nothing unless you absolutely have to. The idea is to communicate, to share, but what’s the best way? Does any one person know this? God knows. Let’s take a look at this next view of communication as shared here in Hebrews 13:16 KJV – But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Think before you speak, or share, don’t gossip, we must remember our studies on James in this instance. Yet, still communicate one to the other. It’s not easy to feel the need to discuss problems we have with our communication with others, but let’s not put words in their mouths that don’t belong.
Matthew 5:37 KJV – But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
It is hard to reveal our innermost fears, our feelings to each other, even if we are teachers, ministers, friends and family and more. In fact, this can be one of the most difficult considerations for all of us, no matter who we are, what we believe, where we live and more.
Luke 24:17 KJV – And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
Jesus didn’t want anything to be hidden. He knew already what had been said. He knows even now what you are thinking, as God would also know. Before the words come out of our mouths or are more than an inkling in our thoughts, God already knows what they will be. Yet, as we were taught manners while we were children, manners get forgotten in the world as we grow. We see this shared, even in Scripture as shown here in I Corinthians 15:33 KJV – Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
This again shares an ideal we heard in our studies of James. We see so much of the bulk of Scripture, returning us to our studies in those five short chapters. Corrupt communication, remember, James said to bridle our tongues. He wasn’t the only one to think so, as we share here in Ephesians 4:29 KJV – Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to use of edifying that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Put your words and thoughts to good use. Make them something that people can understand, and are worthwhile to share. Give your thoughts a chance to be heard, and they shall be listened to, at least by someone. I may not give voice to my thoughts often enough for some, but that’s because I’m listening to yours. One thing we learn a lot about in Scripture is to listen and hear before we speak. There are many reasons, this one here is but one of those as shared here in Psalm 71:24 KJV – My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.
There is a saying in this world that goes like this: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me. Yet, in many ways, this is proven untrue. Words do hurt, because the ones who speak them in hurtful manners, don’t think before they speak, or are thinking in a manner that is meant to hurt others. Sometimes this is done unintentionally, and others it would be specifically for pointing out truths that can indeed hurt. James always spoke with blunt precision. He pulled no punches. James 1:19 KJV – Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.
He continues in his thoughts here in James 3:3-5 KJV – Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

James 3:8KJV – But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

James 3:10 KJV – Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be.
When we communicate, we must remember, there are good ways to do so, and bad ones. There are thoughts that should be voiced, and others which should be kept quiet. It is learning the difference that takes time, patience, and practice to manage. We aren’t instantly going to be able to write our thoughts, speak our minds, or any of that, without hurting ourselves or others, if we don’t learn from our mistakes, and remember that sometimes it is better to say nothing than to speak and destroy that which we are attempting to build. Know that my thoughts are always seeking ways to tell you what is going on with my health and even to discuss your own. It is not easy because there are as many mysteries as there are solutions. I have been told by many that they don’t wish to be a burden. Are we burdens to God? Are we burden to Jesus? The answer should be no. If we are not such, then we should not be burdens to friends and family, and should never feel as such. This goes for all of us, no matter our abilities. That’s something we must learn to express, because it builds faith, and wisdom. Now, I’ll be quiet, because that’s something to think about.

But, on a side note, I know that everyone has been very concerned about how I am doing. Physically I am still working to find solutions. I am going to be able to speak more clearly than I am next week when I have my new lower teeth in place. I’ll be practicing by sharing with you. Our sermons and their delivery have had to change drastically due to the medications I am now on. I will only be bringing you ten minutes of my voice, beyond the songs to share, and the format would be entirely different. You’ll get this experience next Sunday on September 2, 2012.

Some are concerned as to what those medications I take can do. I have even heard one or two consider the medication as evil. Yes, I have spoken with God and Jesus about these medications. I have used as many natural elements as I have medicines given by the doctors, actually agreed upon between myself and the doctors. Yes, I am still working toward health and wellness. It is a daily consideration. I am still suffering blackouts. I had two small ones and a big one just this month. I use a cane to maneuver over eighty percent of the time, but I still get places. I spend most of my time sitting in my chair here at the computer, with my feet up on a storage box, trying to meditate and pray the pain into submission. I sit and read the short updates from ministry members, friends and family in the various places and would write, edit or read poetry and other things I have written over the years. We all must try to do just that. Many of us are well versed in this factor of life.

My mind is the clearest it has been in almost ten years. I admit, my short term memory needs serious work. But my long term memory is far clearer than it has been in many, many years. I honestly must say I forget birthdays, anniversaries, and more, because, most times they are never mentioned. I don’t always initiate conversation. Sometimes that is more difficult than people might believe. Otherwise, there are few I know who would initiate the conversations, unless face to face or on the phone. For some reason, written communication has become transient, when it should be the first method beyond calling or face to face, and it should be each of us working toward that consideration, not just one who is expected to make every contact. Can you recall the last time you sent every person on your contact list a note that was personalized and just for them? I haven’t done it enough, this is true. We could explain that away in a billion ways if we were given the chance, but it would sure be nice if, and when, we do communicate, we all ask this one question. What do you think?

I know it isn’t easy to communicate. There is little doubt that there would be. All of us suffer from this wall we must climb over or around, under or through. If you are concerned, voice that concern. There is a song titled A Little Talk With Jesus, and another one Something to Talk About, and that fits all of us, no matter who we are or what we do. I am open to all forms of communication, written, or verbal, instant message or mail. I will provide my contact information if you’d like to start a dialogue. That is, if you have no problem giving me a method in which to contact. I’m more than willing. Are you?

Be A Person First - A Sermon Revisited

Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our sermon or midweek study. You will normally see us posted on Sunday and Wednesday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love. It doesn’t conform to society’s wishes. This ministry shares the Word of God, the Spirit of Christ Jesus. Those who know me well will recognize that there are definitive differences in the creation of every sermon from this point forward. It is God’s will that has brought this to be. We wish only that God’s truth will be shared within His words as brought to us by the Spirit as it fills my heart, mind, and soul to be shared with my hands, but with His words alone.
You will find us in the following location: http://www.covenantofhopeministries.blogspot.com

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

- Please pray for Elder Cal Jennings who has been suffering greatly with his health. May the Lord bring his spirits up and help heal him. Pray also for his faith and that he might keep hold of it in his heart through God's love.

- Please pray for relief in the trials and tribulations for Sister Theresa and myself as we have had a great many over the past year and more.

- Be thankful for each day we live as we do not know what tomorrow brings.

- Pray for our nations that the voice of God be heard through the Spirit.

- Pray for our friends and families that their tomorrows bring blessings and pray our own be the same.

- Pray for those suffering as a result of the terrors that have occurred just this past week around this world.

- Pray for our sick and wounded that they may heal.

Prayer: Father in heaven, our prayer today is to have the Spirit bring clarity to each of our decisions. We thank You for that gift and the many more You have brought us. May our fears be drawn out of us. Help us to see the many gifts Your love brings and the unknown locations it might be found. May our pain and sorrow be eased. May peace be brought from our hearts and shared with others. May Your gifts of love shine through us toward others. We pray for the poor, the sick, the sorrowful, the wounded, and the frightened. We pray for the soldiers, the Samaritans, the children, and the rest. We pray in thanksgiving for every gift brought us. We pray that every tomorrow bring good things. For each of these we pray in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: This sermon is, as it was, an outside the box point of view. What should a true PERSON share? It doesn't matter if you are Christian or not, these are things you should share with each other.

Awe ~ Look in the face of a child as they learn or see something new. Their faces light up with awe and admiration.

Psalm 4:4 KJV - Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

Beauty ~ In everything and everyone there is some form of beauty, just because it or they would be.

Psalm 96:9 KJV - O worship the LORD in the beauty of holineass: fear before him, all the earth.

Courage ~ It takes courage to be born, to live, to love, and to die.

Psalm 27:14 KJV - Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

Delight ~ If there were no reason to smile, life would be far longer than any last mile.

Psalm 37:4 KJV - Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Expectation ~ Some would equate this to hope, or to living up to expectation. Yet, in truth, we should have an expectation of something new, whether exciting or not, every hour, of every day.

Philippians 1:20 KJV - According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body whether it be life, or by death.

Faith ~ just a tiny amount goes a very long way.

Romans 1:17 KJV - For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Gratitude ~ It doesn’t hurt to be thankful for the things you’ve got.

I Thessalonians 5:18 KJV - In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Honesty ~ Don’t pretend things are good when they’re bad, and don’t ask for sympathy when it isn’t warranted.

I Timothy 2:2 KJV - For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

Humility ~ This is one of the most difficult ideals. It is very hard to be humble, no matter who we are, or where we live.

Proverbs 15:33 KJV - The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility.

Hope ~ This is one thing that goes with many of those listed. In fact, there are many here that could be combined. A world without hope is a place we don’t want to be.

Romans 5:4 KJV - And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

Love ~ Let us remember that loving one another doesn’t have guidelines, party lines, divisions of faith, state, county or national lines, it is unconditional, ever present, the building block of all that would be listed here.

John 15:17 KJV - These things I command you, that ye love one another.

Patience ~ Like humility, one of the hardest to hold onto. Even if we’re steaming we can hold on to that ounce of patience in the midst of frustration. Yes, all of us need practice here.

James 1:3 KJV - Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

Peace ~ You must share peace to have peace, it isn’t a one sided deal.

Psalm 29:11 KJV - The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.

John 14:27 KJV - Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Perseverance ~ To achieve anything, you must work hard to get it, and not be discouraged.

Ephesians 6:18 KJV - Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.

Prudence ~ Take care in the things you do, for someone is depending on that, and it might not be just you.

Ephesians 1:8 KJV - Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

Reach ~ Be willing to reach for the stars, and then find a way to do that.

Philippians 3:13 KJV - Brethren, I count not myself to be apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto things that are before;

Seek ~ The truth is, if you seek it, you will find that which you are seeking.

Job 5:8 KJV - I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause.

Teach ~ Give this gift, the gift of what you know, how you know it, and why you love it.

Matthew 28:19 KJV - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Understanding ~ If we strive to understand, perhaps we ourselves shall grow.

Philippians 4:7 KJV - And the peace that passeth all understanding, and in knowledge, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Voice ~ Don’t be afraid to open your mouth whether you agree or disagree, and don’t forget to close your mouth when you know it will run away with you.

Luke 5:36-38 KJV - And he spake also a parable unto them; no man putteth a new garment upon an old; if otherwise then both maketh a rent and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
But new wine must be put into new bottles, and both are preserved.

James 1:26 KJV - If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is in vain.

Will ~ Share good will, because where there is a will, there is a way.

Luke 2:14 KJV - Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Ephesians 6:7 KJV - With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:

Yesterday ~ Give the gift of memories of yesterday, for those who will be born today and tomorrow, as a lesson learned is knowledge and wisdom earned.

Hebrews 13:8 KJV - Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Zeal ~ Be enthusiastic about life and living, the things you are doing, and the ones you love. Remember, though, that there are dangers in being zealous. Repentance should be pursued by being zealous, as opposed to the opposite.

Revelation 3:19 KJV - As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Each of these are just bits and pieces of what true humanity should, and could be. These are things every PERSON should work toward. Sure, there are far more we could find. Nothing is written in stone, save the fact that today someone will be born, and someone will die, truth will be spoken and so will a lie. Now, there’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Matthew 6:9-13 KJV)

An Outside the Box Consideration

Attributes of the perfect person: What would you want in the perfect person? Would you want them to be human? If so, what characteristics are important to you? Here are just a few that would be nice to see, at least in the eyes of some. What do you think? Could there be a way to found a group that shares all of this? There are many who thought so, not just here in America, but all over this world throughout history. Otherwise this world would be in even more chaos than it already is. There are times when our humanity shines, and times when inhumanity rules. Let’s find it within ourselves to find that which makes us human, and keeps us that way.

Be Human – be willing to admit to not being perfect and be able to face up to whenever you are wrong and admit it.

Honesty – absolutely vital to be honest not only with voters but with their self as well as other compatriots.

Faith – it doesn’t matter which walk of faith, just to have faith is enough.

Understanding – you have to be willing to see from all perspectives, at all levels.

Humor – laugh at your mistakes, admit them, and don’t be morose or cynical over things.

Ethics – business, legal and spiritual

Morals – business, legal and spiritual, and yes there is a difference.

Education – important but not necessarily requiring prestige or perfection. Study and know what you’re talking about, getting into and so on.

Enthusiastic – be able to show that you have the energy to prove your point, and to fight for the best causes.

Objectivity – have this in order to ensure that you can see all angles before pursuing anything. When you do, you’ll find solutions that benefit far more than they would bring harm.

Judgment – only when you have explored all potential to discern fact from fiction reality from imagination can you see truth.

Patience – something we all need. Have patience through every description, every downfall, and every achievement. The results make this worthwhile.

Perseverance – just because you don’t achieve a goal the first time doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Strive for goals, and find ways to solve the reason you can’t reach them.

Reason – use reason in the pursuit of everything.

Prudence – be careful in how, when, why, where, and even what you would pursue.

Decisive – listen to all sides, but make your own educated decision on anything and everything.

Willing – be willing to say no, and to explore the potential of everything, even if it looks impossible.

Risk – don’t argue with the fact that there might be risk involved in every decision you must make.

Prepare – even for the impossible things we must be prepared, because there are times you never know.

Open Minded – when debating on the best results for whatever topic is on the hot seat, you must be open minded to ideas, theories, and thoughts of all descriptions.

Trust – this is absolutely vital to hold onto. Once you have broken the trust of just one, it makes every step that much more difficult.

Ambition – should not be the first reason you pursue a life that will put you in the crosshairs as often as not.

Real – you have to be real, be genuine, in every discussion, every letter, every point of view.

Rational – never make claims you can’t substantiate and never, ever, make promises you know you can’t keep.

Promise – to be true to who you are, what you believe, how you pursue things, and everything else. Never, ever make a promise you don’t intend to keep, or cannot keep.

Un-Political – don’t play politics, in other words, don’t paint yourself in the typical and proverbial corner with things you alone cannot either change, control, or pursue for any or all reasons. In a government for the people, of the people, and by the people, there are no favorites and should never have been. In the times of Jesus, the ideal was relayed in Matthew 22:21 KJV – They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

Be Active in Listening AND Hearing – you can’t have one or the other, both are absolute necessities and both must be actively pursued at all times.

Take Action – at the first moment you realize some action is needed, no matter the reason, or the situation, take action, but do so using rational understanding, wisdom, knowledge and more.

Don’t Make Enemies Out of Friends – the last thing anyone wants to do is make an enemy of someone you consider a friend. One to follow that up, don’t always believe your enemies will be willing to be your friend and sit at the same table to make peace.
Matthew 5:44 KJV  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
This one is one of the hardest ideals. It is such because all of us have had enemies of one sort or another. All of us have held a grudge in our lifetimes, and others have done the same toward us. There are many who would persecute us, no matter what. This is not an easy ideal, and that’s yet another thing even I have struggled with, but forgiveness can come with time. It doesn’t mean you have to forget, just forgive. Most of us who have been wronged in some way have had a terrible time just forgiving, much less forgetting.

Promote Peace – the only way to have peace is to give peace, this is one of the single toughest lessons to learn and remember.
Always believe a spoonful of sugar will help the medicine go down. Even when it is you who must take that medicine.
Galatians 5:22-23 KJV – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Sympathy and Empathy – share both for any situations that require them. Without them you will fail in portraying honesty, faith, understanding and more.

Humility – show this at all times, because you know you can’t always be right and you can’t always be wrong. Be willing to admit to both, but remember, don’t become conceited in anything you realize was a right decision.
Proverbs 15:33 KJV – The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

Idealistic – be idealistic within a realistic boundary. Yes, I realize that doesn’t make any sense, but if you don’t have idealistic views, you will only see negatives in place of positives.

Positive – this is an absolute must, you must do what you can to think positively and know when to say when. Negativity benefits no one.

Finding the right person is something that is never easy. As we know, lawmakers have their opinions, and often we’ll see the results of bad opinions or bad steps taken. The Bible shares this in a segment of Scripture, it has been transformed into song and carries an intrinsic, fundamental truth within it. Look beyond these words and you would see what the perfect choice could be.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 KJV - To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

The question is, can any who are seen today fit this ideal? The answer should be one that takes into account the original ideals of this country, a government of the people, by the people and for the people. There is strength in the word people, because it doesn’t say corporations, money, power, greed, etc. This is something that all governing bodies should embrace, and yet, war seems to be all they can manage.

I know that, under most circumstances, I am the last person to bring up an idea that should, could, or would have implications across the board. I also know I’m not the person described in the above defining attributes. Although I can pursue every one of those attributes, I do not believe others would find it a credible consideration, if that makes an iota of sense. Is there anyone that fits the ideals of those definitions above? I can’t say whether there would or would not be, because, though I have seen some very good people in my lifetime, I could not picture them in such a position as this describes. Do we need to be, or to know someone with these attributes and more besides if we are going to get back to what this country was meant to be? I believe the answer to that is yes. Now, that’s something out of the box to think about.

Love One Another Is Not Just A New Testament Ideal

Covenant of Hope Ministries Sunday Sermon_08_12_2012

Prayer List: Our prayer list remains the same for the moment. If any wish to add to it, please feel free to comment.

Prayer:
Father in heaven, our prayer today is to have the Spirit bring clarity to each of our decisions.
Sermon: Today we aren’t going to have an ordinary sermon. In fact, it is a sermon related to a conversation between a pair of friends. This friend of mine asked something about how the Old Testament alluded to the New Testament, and what connects them. Well, there are tons of things that connect one to the other. I won’t go into the whole list of verses. But, I will show some that are nearly identical, for your own study.
Levicus 26:3 KJV – If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them;
There are so many ways to see the ideals of keeping commandments. What does it mean to keep a commandment? Well, think about it this way. Keep a promise, you’ve kept a commandment. Follow a rule, you’ve kept a commandment. Understand why both are important, you’ve kept them in your heart, in your mind, and in your spirit. Realize what they mean, not just to you, but to those around you, then you are keeping a promise, a commandment, a rule to live by. Now, an interesting view is that held by Joshua as we read here in Joshua 22:5 KJV – But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Let’s continue to see how this connects to the Psalms.
Psalm 78:7 KJV – That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.
You had to know I would link this to our current set of Scriptures, even if I would still be on sabbatical. The only reason I am here, is that the inquiry has stuck with me for several days and I had to address it, as it is very important to see how commandments, rules, promises, all lead in the same direction. You’re probably going to ask, where that leads. Well, with these verses, the answer will be found. Our next view would be seen here in Proverbs 4:4 KJV – He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
Look at this one, listen to it closely. You will see something very important about keeping commandments, keeping promises, and where to keep them. Let’s continue to look into Scripture for our answers. Now, how do these Old Testament verses tie in to our New Testament? Well, let’s take a look at the Gospel of Matthew and see just how that is possible here in Matthew 19:17 KJV – And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Even as Jesus would be the Son of God, He was also the Son of Man. This made him good only through God who created Him as man. Certainly, Jesus was, as He is, blessed by love and grace eternally, but, on earth, all the troubles, the pain and sorrow, take their toll on any person. Imagine, God walking beside us in the body of man. Wait, that already happened. His name is Jesus. God walked with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego while in the fiery furnace. He did so as the Spirit that is God.
John 15:10 KJV – If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
Those who know the Bible well will recognize these verses. They are part of the Vine and Branches parable Jesus told. As many know, this is one of my favorite views of the commandments, the ideal of keeping promises. The blessing of realizing that through love, keeping promises can be seen both to and from God and ourselves. Now, there’s an interesting ideal. Jesus says to abide in His love. God says the same when He says keep the commandments. What do these both portray? They portray the ideal of love one another. It doesn’t matter what creed or religion, what faith or country, color of skin, friend or enemie, or otherwise, it means only to love one another. John again shares with us a sentiment that stems from the Psalms. Let’s see what he shares here in I John 3:22-24 KJV – And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
And he that keepeth his commandments, dwelleth in him, and he in him. And whereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

Our final view of keeping promises, keeping faith and hope in the embodiment of love that is God’s ultimate commandment, shares with it something eye opening, within the most controversial portion of all of Scripture. That would be this verse here in Revelation 14:12 KJV – Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Four views in our Old Testament that lead us to four views in the New Testament. Our objective, to see how faith and hope and love can lead us from one point to another. And if we love one another, we also would love God as well. There’s something to share, something to see, and a gift as yet to be. Now, that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer Jesus taught us saying: After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13 KJV)
