Continue in the His Word and Truth Shall Set You Free

Someone, somewhere in my life once said this, "You never stop learning, it began the day you were born, and will continue on until the day you breathe your last breath. Life is what you make of it between those moments.” I have seen many who have lived lives too short, and also many who have lived very long, and amazing, lives. I do not know just why this thought hit me, but I do know what caused it. That has to do with what I found in my email this morning.

This would be the gift from the Gospel of John 8:31-32 KJV - Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Years ago I was asked if I knew the difference between the truth and a lie. I think most of us were. Well, you know, that's an interesting question. Consider this. Did the one asking know the same according to the standards Jesus speaks of here? Did we back then? Do we now? There are "degrees" of truth in this world today, just as there are "degrees" of lies. They're even given colors, black, white, and one heck of a river of gray.

The same person once told me, “You can spot the truth by the sound of the words, and the fire of a lie in the depths of an eye.” In this world today, that’s very, very difficult, because there are many who have learned the art of the soothsayer, as Scripture calls them. So, again, there are “degrees” of truth in this world today. Until, and unless, we are willing to go by the “Gospel” truth as it was originally meant to be gone by, we’ve still got a lot of learning to do. Think about it.

  1. It calls them "fortune tellers" in my KJV. According to my topic index they are unable to interpret, and forbidden in Israel. One version
    Leviticus 20:6 KJV -
"And the soul that turneth unto necromancers And unto soothsayers, to go a whoring after them, I will set my face against that soul, And will cut him off from among his people"

    Another version, same verse:
And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

    NIV -
I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to persecute himself by following them, and will cut him off from his people.

It refers also to Chronicles 29:31 and II Kings 23:24. Wow, and here I just wrote two verses, boy that would have made some serious heads turn with those.

    2. II Chronicles 29:31 should be there. The basics of this, they were deemed liars, cheaters, those who did what they could to steer people away from the truth.

To prove this, here are those verses:
II Chronicles 29:31 KJV - Then Hezekiah answered and said, Now ye have consecrated yourselves unto the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of the LORD. And the congregation brought in sacrifices and thank offerings; and as many as were of a free heart burnt offerings.

Free hearts, those who had confessed their sins, cleansed their unrighteous behavior, turned back toward truth and goodness. That is the aim of this tiny entry.

II Kings 23:24 KJV - Moreover, the workers with familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD.

Wizards, magicians, fortunetellers, they were at one time condemned, considered evil, in place of commonplace, as we see them these days. We also don't see most of these as anything more than entertainment. Yet, in the case of Scripture, these types of people were not entertaining, they were lying, cheating, and worse. They were removing the trust that should have been held in God. This is what these verses are supposed to share.
