Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our Sunday sermon. You will normally see us posted in written and live form on Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love and sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Christ Jesus in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ. It is God’s will that has brought this to be. We wish only that God’s truth will be shared within His words as brought to us by the Spirit as it fills my heart, mind, and soul to be shared with my hands, but with His words alone.

We pray for enlightenment in the wonders that You bring each of us and understanding while studying Your Word. We thank You for the many awe inspiring gifts and the many more You have brought us. May our fears be drawn out of us. Help us to see the many gifts Your love brings and the unknown locations it might be found. May our pain and sorrow be eased. May peace be brought from our hearts and shared with others. May Your gifts of love shine through us toward others. We pray for the homeless, the survivors of the latest hurricanes and tropical storms. We pray for the poor, the sick, the sorrowful, the wounded, and the frightened. Sermon: This week we are studying the third chapter in First Thessalonians. As we know, Paul wrote this letter to the members of the church at Thessalonica. He begins this section here.
1 Thessalonians 3:1 KJV –Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;
NIV –So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens.
Paul is explaining that, when they needed a respite, they were able to find a place where they could be alone, think, pray, and meditate in the Spirit. This was very important in the early church and remains as such even today. We must listen to the Spirit as it fills our hearts and minds, lifts our spirits and souls. This is something explained many, many times in Scripture. Here is one instance from the prophet Jeremiah.
Jeremiah 20:9 KJV – Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
NIV – But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.
Luke reflects on a moment when Paul knew things were bad in Athens and needed to be dealt with immediately, if not sooner. This is why he sent for both Silas and Timotheus.
Acts 17:15-16 KJV – And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed. Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
NIV – Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible. While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols.
As we all know, evil and wickedness would occur all around this world in small, medium, large, and gigantic sizes on occasion. This is something that Jesus warns us all about throughout the gospels. Paul is remembering this as we continue in this chapter.
1 Thessalonians 3:2 KJV –And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:
NIV –We sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,
Paul is again hearkening back to the writings of Luke in the Acts of the Apostles.
Acts 16:1 KJV – Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:
NIV – Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek.
Acts 18:5 KJV – And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.
NIV – When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.
Paul also pulls experiences he had while in places like Corinth in Greece.
1 Corinthians 3:10 KJV –According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
NIV –By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.
You’ll notice that sin and sinfulness, wickedness and evil, are afflictions of the heart, mind, spirit, and soul. They are a sickness that is pervasive, coloring every thought, every action, and every reaction any person makes. This is one reason that Jesus warned the twelve Apostles and all who followed to test the spirits. That’s very important. Paul is emphasizing how the seven troubles of vanity, envy, lust, enmity, wrath, shame and doubt invade our actions, our thoughts, our reactions, and even may color our memories as well as our dreams. This is his warning to the church at Thessalonica.
1 Thessalonians 3:3 KJV –That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.
NIV –so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite well that we are destined for them.
We see this referencing back to the days of King David, first king of the Jews.
Psalm 112:6 KJV – Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
NIV – Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever.
Righteousness, as some of us have learned over the years, is no easy feat to manage. Also, not so easy to hang on to when we are living among wickedness, sinfulness, around this world. That’s why our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ handed out this warning to the Twelve Apostles.
Matthew 10:16-18 KJV – Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
NIV – “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
Matthew 24:9-10 KJV – Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
NIV – “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,
Paul carried this warning with him wherever he went. He sent the many warnings Jesus gave out to these fledgling churches, so that they could keep on the narrow path Jesus blazed for them all.
1 Thessalonians 3:4 KJV –For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.
NIV –In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know.
Now, remember when we spoke about soothsayers, false teachers, and the like? Well, Jesus warned time and again regarding this very same concern. It is a concern we have seen manifesting several times in the nearly two millennia since our Savior was resurrected from the dead and rose into heaven. Do not be deceived.
Matthew 24:5 KJV – For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
NIV – For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.
John 16:1-3 KJV – These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
NIV – “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
Acts 20:24 KJV – But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
NIV – However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.
Paul, the other Apostles, the gospel writers and prophets of the New Testament considered faith and the sharing of that faith, as taught by Jesus, was more important than anything and everything else in this world. This is one thing that, to this very moment in time, is a concept so many are either unable to, or unwilling to get a full grasp on each nuance it has. Sharing faith may seem easy to some, and in fact, may seem like it’s not a problem to many. However, building faith, maintaining that faith, and extending that faith toward others, known or unknown, takes a lot of patience, persistence, prudence, and more for each and every person in this world. Paul pointed this out in the next lines from his first letter to the church at Thessalonica.
1 Thessalonians 3:5 KJV –For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
NIV –For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.
Lead us not into temptation is a very familiar line in the most important prayer from Scripture. Jesus is being tempted here by Satan.
Matthew 4:3 KJV – And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
NIV – The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
We all know how hard it can be to avoid temptation. It doesn’t matter the type or form it will take either. We see all sorts of tempting in this world day in and day out, in all forms of media, gossip, food, money, clothes, all of that. It’s why we all have to work hard to stay on the path toward righteousness. Jesus never said it was easy. In fact, He said it will be a challenge at the very least. We see in these supporting verses from Luke and Paul regarding preaching to the masses and hoping, praying, they are able to listen, hear, understand, and put the Living Lord’s Word into practice.
Acts 15:36 KJV – And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.
NIV – Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.”
2 Corinthians 7:5-7 KJV –For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.
NIV –For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.
There are so many really good and faithful Christians in this world that we could easily lose count of all of them. Though Christianity was young in the days of Paul and the other Apostles, their numbers were rising more and more, even with all the dangers from other faiths and religions in the world. That is, as it was, the reason so many rejoice in finding others with similar views as they would possess. Sharing faith is something that brings incredible results to many. We see that in this next verse as Paul reflects on Timotheus.
1 Thessalonians 3:6 KJV –But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
NIV –But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.
Paul again references a great Jewish king, in this case Solomon, son of David.
Proverbs 25:25 KJV – As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.
NIV – Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.
Added to that, Paul references one of several very good, very faithful, prophets.
Isaiah 52:7 KJV – How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!
NIV – How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
God reigns! He truly does! It’s the reason Paul and the other Apostles were always offering the comfort of God’s love, the hope in that same unconditional love brought through the knowledge, the memories, and the faith as bestowed on them through our Savior Jesus Christ and held close through the Holy Spirit. This is what is shown in the next few lines of the letter to Thessalonica.
1 Thessalonians 3:7-9 KJV –Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith: For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord. For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;
NIV –Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?
Faith is an amazing part of a human psyche. It can be built up to be as strong as the strongest elements upon this earth. It can be worn down by pain, loss, fear, and other interruptions in our lives. Holding on to faith is something that Paul and the Apostles and Disciples of Christ had a lot of experience with, especially after the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is because of these reflections, and the various imprisonments and other issues the Twelve Apostles and other Disciples of Christ endured, that they learned how important it was to hang on to faith. This is a lesson all of us need and something we should practice at every moment we live. We see more of that in the words of Paul to the citizens of Corinth and Philippi, as well as through the words of the prophet Samuel and King David.
2 Corinthians 1:4 KJV –Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
NIV –who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
1 Samuel 25:6 KJV –And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.
NIV –Say to him: ‘Long life to you! Good health to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours!
2 Samuel 7:18-20 KJV –Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD? And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant.
NIV –Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign LORD, is for a mere human! What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign LORD.”
Psalm 30:5 KJV – For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
NIV – For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
Psalm 116:12 KJV – What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?
NIV – What shall I return to the LORD for all his goodness to me?
Philippians 1:21 KJV – For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
NIV – For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
How often do we pray? How often do we spend studying the Word? This is one thing we’ve all known either doesn’t get done enough, or doesn’t get truly serious thought or action. Paul points this out in his next verse through the letter to the church at Thessalonica.
1 Thessalonians 3:10 KJV –Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
NIV –Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.
Paul again reminds his fellow Christians that faith takes practice, and often lots of it. He reflects on lessons learned in the first scroll of Samuel.
1 Samuel 12:23 KJV –Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
NIV –As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.
Paul then references his experience from the church at Corinth.
2 Corinthians 13:9-11 KJV –For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection. Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction. Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
NIV –We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is that you may be fully restored. This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down. Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
He adds to that a reference to the second letter that he wrote to Timothy.
2 Timothy 1:3 KJV –I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
NIV –I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.
Paul emphasizes here in this next verse where the drive to teach the many as opposed to the few would come from. It is something that, from experience, he realized and recognized was better than any other alternative. We all should take this advice into our hearts and minds as we share our own experiences as being Christians even in this world today.
1 Thessalonians 3:11 KJV –Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.
NIV –Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.
Paul again utilizes several references from both the Old Testament Scrolls and the prophets within them, as well as his letter to the church at Galatia.
Isaiah 63:16 KJV – Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.
NIV – But you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us or Israel acknowledge us; you, LORD, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.
Jeremiah 31:9 KJV – They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
NIV – They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
Galatians 1:4 KJV – Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
NIV – who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
It is all about Unconditional Love, the teaching and spreading of the faith Jesus Christ wished all of us to know and understand. It is all about Unconditional Faith, which is in itself part and parcel within God’s Unconditional Love. These are elements all Christians should build their foundations of faith upon. That’s what Paul shares here.
1 Thessalonians 3:12 KJV –And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:
NIV –May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.
Here Paul reflects on something that Jesus said long ago as written in the Gospel of Matthew. In this world today, through many houses of Christian faith, we consider it the “Golden Rule”. Regardless that this rule existed, spoken through our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, it is one rule that is broken far too often in this world. Here is Paul’s reminder of that rule through the words of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Matthew 7:12 KJV – Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
NIV – So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 22:37-39 KJV – Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
NIV – Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
Increasing faith, that’s something everyone wants to do. Yet, so often we find those who believe that faith can be built by osmosis. It can’t. You have to work at it. You have to practice, practice, and practice even more to build, rebuild, and elevate your faith. This is what some disciples did not understand.
Luke 17:5 KJV – And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
NIV – The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”
Paul, though it took him as long as the other eleven, realized it is not easy to explain, nor practice in full in a world full of contradictions. This remains true to this very day.
Philippians 1:9 KJV – And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;
NIV – And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
The last lines in the first letter Paul wrote to Thessalonica emphasizes the need to keep our faith going. He points out what Jesus through the Holy Spirit can do to help each of those seeking the path toward their truest faith and peace in everlasting life.
1 Thessalonians 3:13 KJV –To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.
NIV –May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
Paul is referencing something that Jesus said. It is portrayed in three views of the Gospel as shared here.
Matthew 25:31 KJV – When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
NIV – “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.
Mark 8:38 KJV – Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
NIV – If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
Luke 1:6 KJV – And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
NIV – Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.
Hang on to that faith, no matter how small the size it would be now. Hold it close, build upon it, and bit by bit, moment by moment, your foundations in faith will grow to a size even you may never truly realize. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:
Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
