Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our Sunday sermon. You will normally see us posted in written and live form on Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love and sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Christ Jesus in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ. It is God’s will that has brought this to be. We wish only that God’s truth will be shared within His words as brought to us by the Spirit as it fills my heart, mind, and soul to be shared with my hands, but with His words alone.

Prayer: Father in heaven, our prayer today is to have the Spirit bring health and healing to each of our bodies, minds, spirits, and souls. We pray for enlightenment in the wonders that You bring each of us and understanding while studying Your Word. We thank You for the many awe inspiring gifts and the many more You have brought us. May all of our fears be drawn out of us. Help us to see the many gifts Your love brings and the unknown locations it might be found. May our pain and sorrow be eased. May peace be brought from our hearts and shared with others. May Your gifts of love shine through us toward others we meet or know. We pray for the homeless, the survivors of the latest hurricanes, tropical storms, and forest wildfires. We pray for the poor, the sick, the sorrowful, the wounded, and the frightened. We pray for the soldiers, the Samaritans, the children, and the rest. We pray in thanksgiving for each and every gift brought us. We pray that every tomorrow would bring good things. For each of these we pray in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: This week we are completing the second chapter of the first letter Paul wrote to the membership of the church at Thessalonica. As Jesus taught the Apostles, though with their own experiences added as well, the Apostles worked hard to spread the truth and the life of our Savior Jesus Christ through letters like this one Paul has written. He is reminding that they are still learning about the Savior and His gift of eternal life.
1 Thessalonians 2:11 KJV –As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,
NIV – For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,
Paul is, as all the Apostles were, a well respected citizen and follower of Christ. His knowledge is easily portrayed in the way he writes each of his letters. This is a skill he had even before Jesus compelled him to stop what he was doing and transform his entire life to pursue eternal life. Another thing that Paul and the twelve did was to persuade people always to witness with one another, in groups of three or more. Remember, Jesus said where three or more are gathered there will He be among them. Here we see how Luke, Paul, and John the Beloved emphasized the need for witnessing.
Luke 16:28 KJV – For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
NIV – for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
1 Corinthians 4:14 KJV –I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
NIV –I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children.
3 John 1:4 KJV –I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
NIV –I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Paul continues in his work teaching these fledgling Christian churches all over Greece, Italy, and Asia Minor. He does so in order to keep the promise of Jesus alive. This is something we all should do as true Christians. The ability to follow and bring others together in that journey is as important individually as it is collectively.
1 Thessalonians 2:12 KJV –That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
NIV – encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.
To get references from all over Scripture, we go back to the journey of Enoch. Remember, Enoch took an extremely long walk with God, for more than a hundred years per the Scriptures.
Genesis 5:22 KJV – And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
NIV – After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.
A true walk of faith will take us to places we never think we’ll experience. We will be and do things that we would never have imagined doing. Many of you watching and listening have most likely gone through with adventures in life that your younger selves might not have ever thought to experience. We see that in Paul’s letters to Rome, Corinth, and Ephesus.
Romans 8:28-30 KJV – And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
NIV – And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
2 Corinthians 4:6 KJV –For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
NIV –For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
Ephesians 4:1 KJV – I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
NIV – As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.
Discipline, so many people have a very difficult time to keep a disciplined practice of prayer, study, and meditation for anything in this world. Yes, anything. In this world we need that time, short or long, to simply empty our minds of the daily grind and just absorb spiritually, mentally, through prayer, scripture, and fellowship with each other. Being able to simply take time out of busy lives alone with God through the Holy Spirit in prayer and meditation is important for every person in this world for destressing, decompressing, calming the spirit, the mind, the heart, and the soul. For this methodology, all of us should be thankful. This is what Paul shares here in this letter to the church at Thessalonica.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 KJV –For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
NIV –And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.
One of the most important things about faith is being able to develop it from the correct point of view. This is not easy in a world that has far too many competing influences. This isn’t just in the view of religion, but in all points of view. This is something Jesus was adamant about while teaching with the twelve Apostles. He was always pointing out their lack of concentration, their lack of understanding the Truth and the Light as He would be. True faith in God requires concentrated efforts on our parts to develop our faith, our spiritual selves, so that we can see, hear, feel, know, understand, and apply all that God teaches us in our study, our practicing. Fear of the Lord is not “primal fear” as we experience through instinct. It’s completely different. Each of us answers for our sins. We feel it when we’ve misspoken, told a fib, or ignored things we shouldn’t have. We see a lot of people picking up the pieces after a disaster due to not having faith and keeping that faith in this Old Testament reference.
Haggai 1:12 KJV – Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.
NIV – Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD.
Teaching others what God wants them to understand is something that is shown throughout all of Scripture. It’s why we have the Bible in the first place, to learn about God and how His love should always be part of our thoughts, words, prayers and life in general. Jesus points out that, when we are teaching one another about God and our Savior Jesus, we are speaking in the Spirit and through the Spirit. Jesus pointed this out in the Gospel of Matthew here.
Matthew 10:20 KJV – For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
NIV – for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Paul focused in on this in his letter to Rome as well.
Romans 10:17 KJV – So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
NIV – Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
Suffering for our faith is seen in an infinite number of points of view. No one person has the exact same experience in this either. Paul, regardless that he was never alone in prison, shared with his fellow prisoners that the truth, the way, and the light, was what should guide them through life after their sentences had been completed. This is something that he, as all the twelve, had hoped would assist in spreading God’s truth through the world. We see hints of that in every letter Paul wrote.
1 Thessalonians 2:14 KJV –For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:
NIV –For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews
Persecution of Christians continues to this very day. We see devout Christians imprisoned all over the world simply for believing in God and proving that belief. In this world today, we would never have thought that people would continue to be persecuted for their faith, and yet, we read, hear, and see this very same action all around this world in similar ways to what Luke describes here.
Acts 13:50 KJV – But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.
NIV – But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.
Acts 14:2-5 KJV – But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands. But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,
NIV – But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders. The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles. There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.
Paul, as Luke was doing, warns that the Jews of the day were ready and waiting to persecute the followers of Jesus Christ, specifically because they were exactly that. It is sad to see and hear about these acts and actions even almost two thousand years later.
1 Thessalonians 2:15 KJV –Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
NIV –who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone
Many times in life we’ve heard the words “history repeating itself”. This is something that humanity tends to do simply because we forget much more easily than we memorize and remember. Here we see this continuous circle through the eyes of Jeremiah first.
Jeremiah 2:30 KJV – In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
NIV – “In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravenous lion.
Jesus doesn’t want us to play ring around the rosy. He wants us to follow His path, straight to eternal life. Whatever happens to us here on this earth is temporary and will be proven as such on the Judgement Day. We see that in His own words here in the Gospel of Matthew and in the reflections of the gospel writer Luke in the Acts of the Apostles.
Matthew 5:12 KJV – Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
NIV – Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Acts 2:23 KJV – Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
NIV – This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
Paul also references these thoughts in his second letter to the church at Corinth in Greece.
2 Corinthians 11:26 KJV –In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
NIV –I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.
Remember, Jesus said that there is no Jew or Gentile, no male or female, no servant or free, rich or poor, none of that in God’s eternal kingdom. It’s hard to even imagine that idea in this world filled with such stark differences between wealth and depravity. This is what Paul points out, that prejudices here on earth are not allowed in God’s world. Yet, even today, prejudice exists in every country all over this world.
1 Thessalonians 2:16 KJV – Forbidding us to
speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway:
for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.
NIV –in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may
be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of
God has come upon them at last.
Salvation, the ultimate gift for Christians, was something the Jews did not want to happen to everyone outside of them. This is not an unusual consideration. We see in several of the scrolls of Scripture that any mingling with the Gentiles was strictly forbidden. Much like several of the documented miracles Jesus performed were “forbidden” and considered “work” on the sabbath day. Remember God is always everywhere. He is the reason we have Jesus and His teaching in the first place. His work started out long before our Savior was born.
Isaiah 45:22 KJV – Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
NIV – Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.
Jesus gave a simple set of instructions in regard to gaining eternal life. Here is just one of those moments. Believe, be baptized, achieve salvation. Short, simple, to the point. We see this in His words as recorded in Mark’s gospel.
Mark 16:16 KJV – He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
NIV – Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Luke added more reflection on this very consideration.
Acts 4:12 KJV – Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
NIV – Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
Again, Paul points out that time is short in gaining knowledge, understanding, and wisdom in the truth that has been shared by God through the Word of Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Time is short, even today, we see the signs and symbols all around us. This is what Paul shared with the church at Thessalonica.
1 Thessalonians 2:17 KJV –But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.
NIV –But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.
Forgiveness begins in the heart, spreads to the mind, and then fulfills its purpose as Jesus insisted we should follow. To many, forgiveness is not possible in a human heart. However, the ability to forgive brings that spiritual element of the Holy Spirit into us. It fulfills several purposes for the human psyche. We see that through the eyes of the gospel writer Luke in two instances and again through Paul’s letter, this time in the letter to the church at Corinth.
Luke 12:58 KJV – When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.
NIV – As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
Acts 17:10 KJV – And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
NIV – As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.
1 Corinthians 5:3 KJV –For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
NIV –For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this.
1 Thessalonians 2:18 KJV –Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.
NIV –For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan blocked our way.
Matthew 4:10 KJV – Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
NIV – Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
Satan is tempting Jesus in this verse. We are all subject to temptation in all directions throughout our lives. It’s resisting that temptation we must work toward. This is what the gospel writer Matthew shares. Paul adds this in his letter to the church at Rome.
Romans 1:13 KJV – Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
NIV – I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
Being unaware is dangerous. It’s like crossing the highway in the middle of the night while wearing black. We have to be aware of the omniscience of God the Father, the omnipresence, an ability to be anywhere, and everywhere, all at once. We see Him in the flowers that bloom, the clouds that gather on the horizon, the storm as it rages. We see His love in the smiles of our children, our parents, our spouses and friends. We hear His love in the songs, poetry, laughter, and all of those good and beautiful moments in life. It would be these upbeat moments that Paul encourages in his letters, like this moment here in the letter to the church at Thessalonica.
1 Thessalonians 2:19 KJV –For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?
NIV –For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?
We are God’s ultimate creation. This is something we often don’t spend a lot of time thinking about. Yet, in truth, we should do exactly that. Life here on earth can drag us down, but we cannot forget just how special we are individually and collectively. This is what the prophet Isaiah shares.
Isaiah 62:3 KJV – Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.
NIV – You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD’s hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
Jesus points this out just as easily here in Matthew’s gospel and again in Mark’s, as well as John the beloved.
Matthew 16:27 KJV – For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
NIV – For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
Mark 8:38 KJV – Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
NIV – If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
John 21:22 KJV – Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
NIV – Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
Paul reflects on the amazing life Jesus led in all of his letters. This is why he references them all together in the various letters, so that all the churches can see just how much the focus should be on Jesus and God. Focus, that’s something that takes practice, no matter the field of practice we have. That is what we see in all of these references.
1 Corinthians 15:23 KJV –But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
NIV –But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.
Philippians 4:1 KJV – Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.
NIV – Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!
Now, the majority of all the letters and scrolls of the New Testament focus on the churches singularly. However, this is not how it should be. We are a “collective faith”. All of us should see eye to eye when it comes to Scripture and the teaching of it. John the Beloved gives us the reason why in one of the most hotly contested scrolls in all of Scripture.
Revelation 1:7 KJV – Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
NIV – “Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him"; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.” So shall it be! Amen.
Revelation 22:12 KJV – And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
NIV – Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.
Paul leaves the church at Thessalonica with a smile in his words. He points out that their work as a very new church filled with the believers of Christ, that they are welcomed as part of the church family collective. This is something all humans need. That moment of comfort is incomparable.
1 Thessalonians 2:20 KJV –For ye are our glory and joy.
NIV –Indeed, you are our glory and joy.
Again, we need to remember how to smile, to laugh, to share the Word not just in serious manners, but also in humorous, in song, poetry, and as many ways as possible. We are the crown of God’s love, and we should share that fact with each other. We see that in Solomon’s words and also in Paul’s other letters to Corinth.
Proverbs 17:6 KJV – Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
NIV – Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.
1 Corinthians 11:7 KJV –For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
NIV –A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
2 Corinthians 1:14 KJV –As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.
NIV –as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.
We should all recognize that this is the day that the Lord has made, and we should all be glad and rejoice in it. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:
Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
