Paul Warns of the Danger of Failing to Recognize Our Sins

Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our Sunday sermon. You will normally see us posted in written and live form on Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. - Please pray for Evangelist Cal Jennings who has been suffering greatly with his health. May the Lord bring his spirits up and help heal him.

- Please continue praying for my father-in-law, who continues in isolation as his blisters have popped and dead or dying skin has fallen off to be slowly, painfully replaced with new skin.

- Pray for the economy around this world as inflation and supply chains suffer from extremely high prices for fuel and overly high demand.

- Pray for those who have suffered from violent events, that they heal and do not have scarred psyches and that those who have lost their loved ones to violence find peace in the face of fear.

- Pray for comfort and solace to be shared with those who have said farewell to a loved one this week, known or unknown.  

- Be thankful for each day we live as we do not know what tomorrow brings.

- Pray for our nations that the voice of God be heard through the Spirit.

- Pray for our friends and families that their tomorrows bring blessings and pray our own be the same.

- Pray for those suffering as a result of the terrors that have occurred just this past week around this world.

- Pray for our sick and wounded that they may heal.

 

Prayer: Father in heaven, our prayer today is to have the Spirit bring healing to each of our bodies, minds, spirits, and souls. We pray for each and every person on our prayer lists, personal and collective. We pray for Raymond, Evangelist Cal and his sister, and all of those who we know, pray for the homeless and the jobless in this world. We pray for the hungry and the malnourished. We pray for the poor, weak, and sorrowful people in this world. We pray in thanksgiving for all the great gifts that You have given us, even if we don’t always realize they are there. We pray in hope and patience for those things that are worrying us in our hearts and minds. For each of these we pray in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: This week we are completing the study of the first chapter in Romans. There is quite a bit to process in our minds individually and collectively throughout this letter Paul writes to the church at Rome. The majority of the remainder in this first chapter would be reminding the members of this church what is, and what is not, godly by nature. Reminders are necessary, every day on occasion, depending on what is needed. The world today doesn’t truly wish to walk this particular portion of God’s Word. This is something that causes a great deal of pain and sorrow with those who want to follow God’s Word the way that it is meant to be followed. With that, here is where we left off last Sunday. 

Romans 1:22 KJV –Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

NIV –Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools

Everyone wonders why it takes so much to develop wisdom in anything, much less everything. I’ve heard this from people of all ages. What does it mean to be wise? That’s a very good question. Does it mean we always follow the right path? No, in fact, learning from all our mistakes actually helps us develop wisdom. Does it mean we can’t be wrong? No, in fact, we can still make a wrong turn in our lives even with our journey for knowledge, wisdom, through our Christian faith. This is one thing that our Heavenly Father requests of each of us. Be kind, be patient, be persistent, prudent, be faithful, and share a willingness to learn, or re-learn. We see this pattern in all these connecting verses. We start with King Solomon’s words here.

Proverbs 25:14 KJV – Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

NIV – Like clouds and wind without rain is one who boasts of gifts never given.

Proverbs 26:12 KJV – Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

NIV – Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them.

We add the wisdom of Isaiah and Jeremiah, prophets of God.

Isaiah 44:20 KJV – He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

NIV – Such a person feeds on ashes; a deluded heart misleads him; he cannot save himself, or say, “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”

Jeremiah 4:22 KJV – For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

NIV – “My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.”

Jeremiah 8:8 KJV – How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.

NIV – “’How can you say, “We are wise, for we have the law of the LORD,” when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?

Jeremiah 10:14 KJV – Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

NIV – Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.

Paul adds to his thoughts with the writing of the first letter to the church at Corinth in Greece.

1 Corinthians 1:20 KJV –Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

NIV –Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

Paul continues to warn the people at the churches, and Rome is no different. Before Christianity, the citizens of Italy and other locations were polytheistic.

Polytheists are those who worship many gods.

Monotheists are those who worship only one God.

God’s Word states unequivocally that we should worship Him alone. This is what Paul is pointing out. This is more of Paul’s warning to the citizens of Rome.

Romans 1:23 KJV –And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

NIV –and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

His words are backed up by the Torah, and many more views, including King David, and the prophet Jeremiah.

Deuteronomy 4:16-18 KJV – Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female, The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air, The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:

NIV – so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below.

Psalm 106:20 KJV – Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.

NIV – They exchanged their glorious God for an image of a bull, which eats grass.

Jeremiah 2:11 KJV – Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

NIV – Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols.

Paul also reflects on the words of the gospel writer Luke in the Acts of the Apostles.

Acts 17:29 KJV – Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

NIV – “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill.

Paul points out to these citizens of the Roman church that God is not going to ignore when people fall into the pits of uncleanliness, sinfulness, wickedness, and succumb to the seven troubles of vanity, envy, lust, enmity, wrath, shame, and doubt. We see that in these words Paul wrote.

Romans 1:24 KJV – Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

NIV – Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

Paul again references King David’s writing.

Psalm 81:11-12 KJV – But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

NIV – “But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.

The words of our Savior are again drawn upon by Paul in this letter. He also continues his theme of referencing other letters to the other churches he had written letters to.

Matthew 15:14 KJV – Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

NIV – Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

Ephesians 2:3 KJV – Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

NIV – All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.

Ephesians 4:19 KJV – Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

NIV – Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

1 Thessalonians 4:4 KJV –That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

NIV –that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable,

Paul continues with his warnings of how to truly worship God through the Savior Jesus Christ. Again he references how easily mankind can transform the truth into a lie, how easily we can believe something to be celebrating God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit and end up acting in the opposite point of view. That’s why we must learn to be aware of who we are, what we are doing, and how we are doing whatever that might be.

Romans 1:25 KJV – Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

NIV – They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Again, Paul is drawing wisdom from the prophet Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 13:25 KJV – This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the LORD; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.

NIV – This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you,” declares the LORD, “because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods.

Jeremiah 16:19 KJV – O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.

NIV – LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in time of distress, to you the nations will come from the ends of the earth and say, “Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods, worthless idols that did them no good.

The Lord Jesus Christ and His lessons were learned well by the Apostles, as Paul would have been at the time. This is seen in the reference from Matthew’s gospel.

Matthew 6:24 KJV – No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

NIV – “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Matthew 10:37 KJV – He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

NIV – “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Paul again connects another of his letters, this being the second letter to the church at Corinth, and adds influence from John the Beloved’s first letter as well.

2 Corinthians 11:31 KJV –The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

NIV –The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever, knows that I am not lying.

1 John 5:20 KJV –And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

NIV –We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

Paul’s warnings are repeated again and again. Much as God’s warnings are and were the same. If we continue to fall into the pit of vanity, envy, lust, enmity, wrath, shame, and doubt, we will forever need to reflect on the Word as written in Scripture. This is what Paul is referencing here in these next two verses.

Romans 1:26-27 KJV – For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

NIV – Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

It's not unusual that people forget. We see that everywhere on this earth just by living life. Memories fade, and we lose the good things we should remember, as well as the bad. This is why we have to work hard to keep the Word close. We can do so in all kinds of ways. We need warnings, like this one from the story of Lot in Sodom.

Genesis 19:5 KJV – And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

NIV – They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

This warning continues into more of the Torah, the third and fifth Scrolls of Scripture.

Leviticus 18:22-28 KJV – Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.

Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:

And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.

Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you:

(For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;)

That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you.

 

NIV – “‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.
“‘Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.
 “‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled.
Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things,
for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled.
And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.

Leviticus 20:13 KJV – If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

NIV – “’If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

Deuteronomy 23:17-18 KJV – There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel. Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both these are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

NIV – No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute. You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute into the house of the LORD your God to pay any vow, because the LORD your God detests them both.

Going back into what is known as the “Law” of Scripture, the Torah, is very important, whether it is as a point of reference, or as a method toward adding knowledge to lead toward wisdom, we must continue to study those books of the law, because their influence is felt all the way through Scripture, in both Old and New Testaments. Paul alludes to this necessity with his first letter to Corinth and a reference to Jude, younger brother to Jesus Christ, our Savior.

1 Corinthians 6:9 KJV –Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

NIV –Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men

Jude 1:7 KJV – Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

NIV – In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

If we didn’t make mistakes, life would not be filled with lessons, and we wouldn’t need to reflect on Scripture at all. We need the guidance God can bring us through the Word. His Word was made manifest into our Savior Jesus Christ, and those lessons which were taught in both Old and New Testaments need to continue until the moment when time stops. Here is Paul’s next point to make.

Romans 1:28 KJV – And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

NIV – Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.

Forgetfulness is not easy to overcome in some cases. We see this throughout Scripture in the recording of all the prophets, kings, and other characters throughout Scripture. It’s why the Hebrews were taught to memorize every word of Scripture, to ensure that every Word God had written through the prophets and kings would be remembered should the physical Scrolls of Scripture would be destroyed. We see the warnings again in these supporting verses.

2 Samuel 22:27 KJV –With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.

NIV –to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.

Psalm 69:27 KJV – Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.

NIV – Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation.

Ephesians 5:4 KJV – Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

NIV – Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

2 Thessalonians 2:11 KJV –And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

NIV –For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie

This first chapter, as we wind down, sounds very repetitive, but it was needed at the time. There are times even now that we need this repetition. Paul is pointing out the bad things in behavior that need to be removed from life. We see those who are considered sinners here in these words.

Romans 1:29-30 KJV – Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

NIV – They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;

Paul again refers to the Old Testament writings of David as shared here.

Psalm 5:5 KJV – The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

NIV – The arrogant cannot stand in your presence. You hate all who do wrong;

Psalm 81:15 KJV – The haters of the LORD should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.

NIV – Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him, and their punishment would last forever.

Paul adds to this with the Word as shared by Jesus Christ our Savior and Salvation.

Matthew 5:32 KJV – But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

NIV – But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Paul then includes his second letter to Corinth, both letters to Timotheus, as well as his letter to Titus.

2 Corinthians 12:20 KJV –For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:

NIV –For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.

1 Timothy 3:11 KJV –Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

NIV –In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.

2 Timothy 3:2 KJV –For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

NIV –People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,

Titus 3:3 KJV – For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

NIV – At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.

We end this first chapter of the Scroll of Romans with still more warnings as to what sinners look and act like.

Romans 1:31-32 KJV – Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

NIV – they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Paul again has points of reference throughout Scripture, including King David, King Solomon, Jesus through the eyes of the gospel writer Mark, and Luke as well as his letter to Timotheus.

Psalm 50:18 KJV – When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.

NIV – When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers.

Proverbs 28:4 KJV – They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them.

NIV – Those who forsake instruction praise the wicked, but those who heed it resist them.

Mark 7:18 KJV – And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

NIV – “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them?

Luke 11:48 KJV – Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

NIV – So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.

2 Timothy 3:3 KJV –Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

NIV –without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,

We have to pay attention. We have to put Scripture in our hearts, minds, spirits, souls in as many ways as possible. We can do this through hymns, prayers, and Scripture itself. Study, talk about what you are studying with others, and continue to pray and sing His Word. It will bring reason to the madness and mayhem of life in this world. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
