Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

-      Evangelist Cal Jennings has not been feeling the greatest and neither has Scrappy, so pray they feel better soon.

-      Pray for my sister-in-law who just had surgery done on her teeth and has been in a lot of pain.

-      Pray for my family, especially one of my sisters, who has gone through something she never thought she would end up going through in her lifetime. She ended up doing something she never imagined she would have to do. This same sister’s youngest child is headed for scoliosis surgery this summer as well. Pray that goes well.

-      Pray for my daughter and son-in-law’s family members as they work through some serious family issues.

-      Pray for my friend Janice who is still fighting lingering effects of COVID 19. She is still suffering with a low-grade fever and the exhaustion, but still tests negative. Let’s hope that she recovers from the lingering effects soon.

-      Pray for Janice’s mother who has also been sick and is still having issues after a stroke last year and other medical issues.

-      Pray for a high school classmate of mine, her name is Kelly, who has been diagnosed with cancer and is going through a lot of emotions and more as a result. Her treatments have been going on for the past few weeks now.

-      Continue to keep my Aunt Donna in your prayers. She is hanging on even with the cancer treatments.

-      Pray for a friend who has had a lot of issues to deal with in their life and is working hard to straighten them out. A lot of questions in regard to their health and more have plagued this person for quite a while. They have said they appreciate our prayers.

-      Pray for a family friend of my friend Jeff, who asked us to pray for unspecified reasons.

-      Pray for those who were affected by the earthquakes and aftershocks over the past week.

-      Pray for those who were killed in accidents and violent criminal actions this past week, and for the families who are saying good-bye.

-      Be thankful for each day as we do not know what tomorrow brings.

-      Pray for our nations that the voice of God be heard through the Holy Spirit.

-      Pray for our friends and families that their tomorrows bring blessings and pray our own be the same.

-   Pray for those who have lost their lives in the pursuit of faith and
    hope.

-   Pray for all of those who suffer from cancer and other uncurable
    diseases and conditions that they be secure in God’s embrace through
    the Holy Spirit.

-   Pray for our sick and wounded that they may heal.

-   Pray for those who are serving our countries around this world.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we have so many we bring to You for healing and comfort through their trials and tribulations. There are so many who are in mourning. We pray for my friends Kelly and Janice and her mother. We pray for Cal Jennings and his dog Scrappy who are still not quite feeling the way they should. We pray for my sister and her children who are going through their personal crises. We pray for those who have been lost to illnesses that are and were unknown to them, and their families. We pray for those who have lost their lives to war and violence. We pray for those who have been brought to harm around this world last week. We add to that those who have been falsely imprisoned and all who are being punished unjustly. We add to this with those who are fighting through their health conditions far and wide. We pray that they each hear Your voice and feel Your warm and loving presence in their lives. We pray for our new connections with other ministries worldwide and right here at home. We pray for all of this in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: Today we continue our voyage through the scroll of Romans in what remains of the thirteenth chapter. This last portion of chapter thirteen is split into two segments. The titles for these are: Love Fulfills the Law and The Day Is Near. The first thing people need to remember is that the Law Paul references is God’s Supreme Law. This is the Law as Jesus specified. Love one another and love thy neighbor as thyself, in doing so we honor all Ten Commandments as taught in the Torah. So, here we begin.

 

Romans 13:8 KJV – Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

NIV – Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

 

It’s simple. Love one another fulfills the law because if we love each other as Jesus taught then we leave the seven troubles behind. If we love ourselves as we love one another, then we are doubly sure to fulfill the directive Jesus provided for us to follow. Here are the references for this as spoken by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

 

Matthew 7:12 KJV – Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

NIV – So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

 

Matthew 22:39 KJV – And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

NIV – And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

 

John 13:34 KJV – A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

NIV – “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

 

Now we will add to the Word as Jesus shared it to the words shared by His earthly brother, James the Just and the first letter that John the Beloved wrote.

 

James 2:8 KJV – If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

NIV – If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.

 

1 John 3:10 KJV –In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

NIV –This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

 

There are many views of right and wrong in this earthly world ruled by humanity. Paul points to those things that are right, as opposed to wrong in this next verse to the church at Rome.

 

Romans 13:9 KJV – For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

NIV – The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

 

Paul is repeating a familiar part of the Torah, the Ten Commandments. Because there were people in Rome who had never read the Torah, and some of them were very, very new Christians at the time. Here are half of those Ten Commandments as referenced by Paul.

 

Exodus 20:13-17 KJV – Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

NIV – “You shall not murder.
“You shall not commit adultery.
“You shall not steal.
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

 

Leviticus 19:18 KJV – Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.

NIV – “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.

 

Deuteronomy 5:17-18 KJV – Thou shalt not kill. Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

NIV – You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery.

 

Note how these commandments all lead to one continuous element. Love one another. Love one another, not as the world loves, but as Jesus loves us. Love your neighbor as yourself is exactly what it says. It’s not easy to look past some actions and reactions. Forgiveness is something we do to achieve full redemption in Heaven. Love One Another is a very, very important commandment that Jesus gave us. Paul points it out clearly in these verses, including this one.

 

Romans 13:10 KJV – Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

NIV – Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

 

It’s amazing what love can do. It transforms everything written in Scripture to something alive and filled with action. Jesus Christ is the Living Word now and forever. Love one another and love thy neighbor as yourself contains all ten commandments within it. We see these sentiments in His own words in the gospel of Matthew, and also repeated in the Scrolls of First Corinthians and Galatians in Paul’s words.

 

Matthew 22:40 KJV – On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

NIV – All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

 

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 KJV –Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

NIV –Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

 

Galatians 5:14 KJV – For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

NIV – For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

 

Paul hopes for the time of Jesus’s return is very close. This is something he repeats to bring hope to those who have suffered from oppression of all types. It’s something that we need to hear, even to this very day. Hope is one of the biggest gifts of Unconditional Love. There have been many songs written about hope through Christ and God. Salvation is within reach. The gift of God’s Unconditional Love was released for one and all in the resurrection of our savior Jesus Christ. Paul speaks of this in this next verse.

 

Romans 13:11 KJV – And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

NIV – And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

 

Paul turns to other Old Testament points of view with his continuation of proof that love one another is more than three little words. He goes to the words of the wise King Solomon and the prophet Isaiah. Notice that Paul often references Isaiah in his teaching. In this one, Paul also references Jonah.

 

Ecclesiastes 9:10 KJV – Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

NIV – Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.

 

Isaiah 21:11-12 KJV – The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?
The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.

NIV – A prophecy against Dumah: Someone calls to me from Seir, “Watchman, what is left of the night? Watchman, what is left of the night?”
The watchman replies, “Morning is coming, but also the night. If you would ask, then ask; and come back yet again.”

 

Jonah 1:6 KJV – So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

NIV – The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”

 

Paul adds to this with the Word as spoken by Jesus Christ through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

 

Matthew 16:3 KJV – And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

NIV – and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

 

Matthew 24:42-44 KJV – Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

NIV – “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

 

Matthew 25:5-7 KJV – While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

 

NIV – The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.

 

Matthew 26:40-41 KJV – And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

NIV – Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

 

Mark 13:36-37 KJV – Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

NIV – If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”

 

Luke 21:28 KJV – And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

NIV – And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

 

Now, Paul mentions something interesting in this next verse. In fact, it is an analogy regarding the polytheistic teachings of the Roman Empire. In casting that religion aside and moving toward the “light” that is Jesus Christ, we find the path toward redemption and salvation. The armor of light is the infinite, eternal and unconditional love of our Savior. Remember, love should always be eternal, unconditional, and infinite in its very existence. This is what Paul is teaching here.

 

Romans 13:12 KJV – The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

NIV – The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

 

Did you notice how often this analogy is made in so many things we experience every day? The ideas of dark and light extend in thousands of directions, and we see this in these words as Paul references the Scrolls of Isaiah, Ezekiel, Job, and our Savior Jesus Christ in the gospel of John the Beloved.

 

Isaiah 2:20 KJV – In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

NIV – In that day people will throw away to the moles and bats their idols of silver and idols of gold, which they made to worship.

 

Isaiah 30:22 KJV – Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.

NIV – Then you will desecrate your idols overlaid with silver and your images covered with gold; you will throw them away like a menstrual cloth and say to them, “Away with you!”

 

Ezekiel 18:31-32 KJV – Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

NIV – Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel?
For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

 

Job 24:14-17 KJV – The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief.

The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth his face.

In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light.

For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

NIV – When daylight is gone, the murderer rises up, kills the poor and needy, and in the night steals forth like a thief.
The eye of the adulterer watches for dusk; he thinks, ‘No eye will see me,’ and he keeps his face concealed.
In the dark, thieves break into houses, but by day they shut themselves in; they want nothing to do with the light.
For all of them, midnight is their morning; they make friends with the terrors of darkness.

 

John 3:19-21 KJV – And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

NIV – This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

 

Paul includes his observations as shared in the letter he wrote to Ephesus. And the first letter John the Beloved wrote as well.

 

Ephesians 5:8-11 KJV – For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

NIV – For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

 

Ephesians 6:11 KJV – Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

NIV – Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

 

1 John 2:8 KJV –Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

NIV –Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

 

Now, Paul adds something else. He points to honesty, sobriety, chastity, and advocates against rioting, drunkenness, wantonness, strife, and envy. Basically, Paul is reiterating something we’ve spoken about many times, the seven troubles, which are seen in those five words as vanity, envy, lust, enmity, wrath, shame, and doubt.

 

Romans 13:13 KJV – Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

NIV – Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

 

Paul again references the Old Testament Scroll of Proverbs. He adds to this with the words of our Savior Jesus in the gospel written by Luke.

 

Proverbs 23:20 KJV – Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

NIV – Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat,

 

Luke 21:34 KJV – And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

NIV – “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.

 

Paul then includes his letters to Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, and Thessalonica.

 

1 Corinthians 3:3 KJV –For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

NIV –You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?

 

1 Corinthians 6:9 KJV –Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

NIV –Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men.

 

Galatians 5:21 KJV – Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

NIV – and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

 

Ephesians 5:18 KJV – And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

NIV – Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,

 

1 Thessalonians 4:12 KJV –That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

NIV –so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

 

Lastly, Paul again references the writings of James the Just. As we know, James doesn’t beat around the bush at all.

 

James 3:14-16 KJV – But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

NIV – But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

 

Simplicity is an important rule of thumb when it comes to Christianity and faith in Christ. He wants us to realize that Love one Another is one of the most important sentences written in Scripture. Do you know how many times this phrase is referenced? The phrase Love One Another is listed only 19 times divided between Peter, Paul, and John the Beloved but also includes the Hebrew prophets. The final verse in this chapter is a directive issued to the church there at Rome.

 

Romans 13:14 KJV – But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

NIV – Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

 

Righteousness is listed over 233 times throughout Scripture. The Old Testament holds 136 and the remainder are in the New Testament, totaling 97 from the Gospels to Revelation. There are 30 references to righteousness in Romans alone. Righteousness is love toward Jesus and God. Here are several views of righteousness as shared by Paul and by Job.

 

Job 29:14 KJV – I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.

NIV – I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban.

 

Galatians 3:27 KJV – For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

NIV – for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

 

Galatians 5:16 KJV – This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

NIV – So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

 

Ephesians 4:24 KJV – And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

NIV – and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

 

Colossians 2:23 KJV – Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

NIV – Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

 

Colossians 3:10-12 KJV – And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

NIV – and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. ere there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

 

Righteous love for one another is the ultimate demonstration of unconditional love. This is what Jesus taught. This is what God attempted to share within the Ten Commandments, and what Jesus confirmed in His life here on this earth and on further into His death, burial, and resurrection. Faith is as much a part of Love One Another as it is of righteousness. If we want to be truly Christian, we must follow Him and leave the earthly chains and shackles belonging to the seven troubles behind. Believe in His Word and your life will be forever changed from this moment forward. Faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
