Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our combined written and live Sunday sermon. You will normally see us posted in written and live form on Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love and sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Jesus Christ in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ. We have a real treat today. Evangelist Cal Jennings was able to do the music for both songs, but I am only playing the first one because it takes an age for me to copy and paste links from my laptop to my phone.

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.
- It is the Labor Day holiday for the USA this weekend, let’s pray that those who are traveling would get to their destinations safely and do the same as they return home.
- Evangelist Cal Jennings is taking life day by day with his dog Scrappy. They appreciate all the prayers as the two of them continue to take life one day at a time.
- My daughter has asked if we could add three people from her life onto our prayer list. One of them is named Ms. Ramona and works with my daughter, she was rushed to the hospital and has been ordered to be on bed rest until further notice. The second is her husband Douglas’s grandmother, who has a tentative diagnosis of dementia. The last is her husband’s grandfather, known to everyone as Papa John, who is suffering depression due to his memory issues.
- Please pray for my Mama who has been going through a lot of out of the ordinary stresses including a new roof installation that didn’t go quite as planned.
- A friend of mine, Mary, lost her niece suddenly, with no warnings, one week ago today.
- Please pray for a friend of ours, Tyrone, who is still having issues with recovering from an injury managed at work that has affected his daily life in too many ways. Pray for his healing.
- Pray for Janice’s mother who is still having issues after a stroke last year and other medical issues. Pray for Janice as well, she’s been in quite a lot of pain due to migraines and a fall she suffered a short time ago.
- Please pray for a friend of ours, Sharon, with serious health issues that she has been fighting for control of for quite a while. This friend has also had other issues in her life that have caused chaos in different ways.
- Pray for my employer, Ed, who had a mini-stroke a little over three weeks ago. He’s been put on a new medication and is better, but still needs prayer for other things going on in his life.
- Please keep my employer’s wife, Joy, in prayer as she has been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease.
- One of my sisters is going through some serious stresses that are affecting everything right now, let’s pray she gets relief from these issues.
- Pray for a high school classmate of mine, her name is Kelly, who is finally done with her chemo. She has survived the loss of her hair and the debilitating results of chemotherapy. Let us pray that the evil disease of cancer is gone from her body forever. May God’s blessings wrap around her and protect her keeping her spirits high and her pain low.
- Continue to keep my Aunt Donna in your prayers. She is hanging on even with the cancer treatments and the many changes she is going through.
- Pray for my niece, Autumn, who is having a lot of health issues relative to a head injury from a car wreck. The wreck caused her to now suffer from seizures with an epilepsy diagnosis.
- Pray for Pastor Stephen Okoth in Nakuru, Kenya, as one of our outreach ministers for fifteen years. He and his congregation have done amazing work there in Kenya. God has been with them and the prayers we bring help as well.
- Pray for our other outreach ministers and the work they do, including Rev. Lisa Tyler, one of my mentors, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, and the family of Pastor Robert Nganwa from Uganda who passed away a couple years ago, but the church continues on.
- Pray for those who are serving our countries around this world.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we have several friends, family, and colleagues in all directions to bring up to You in prayer. Pain, illness, and trauma continue to affect Tyrone, and Cal. A friend, Mary, lost a dear family member, her niece, suddenly, and without warning, last week. Pray for the family filled with mourners at this time. Health issues affect a good friend of mine, Sharon. Cancer affects our Aunt Donna let her cancer leave her body and free her from pain. We praise You for Your help in getting Kelly through her cancer treatments for all these months. Illness affects both Ramona and Douglas’s grandmother, see them through their life altering changes and help those supporting them to stay strong and comforting. Add to these with supporting Douglas’s grandfather who has just started having issues with his memory and also losing his independence as a result. There are family and friends suffering financial issues and woes, please help them put the world right side up again. Sending a special prayer to my Mama and my sister Emilie, who need spiritual and other support right now. Our children are back to school, help them to excel in their studies and make new friends and enjoy the learning experience. We pray for all of this in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.
Opening Song: Wherever He Leads I'll Go ~ Alan Jackson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OL68fzQItfs
"Take
up thy cross and follow Me," I heard my Master say;
"I gave My life to ransom thee, Surrender your all today."
Wherever He leads I'll go, Wherever He leads I'll go,
I'll follow my Christ who loves me so, Wherever He leads I'll go.
He drew me closer to His side, I sought His will to know,
And in that will I now abide, Wherever He leads I'll go.
Wherever He leads I'll go, Wherever He leads I'll go,
I'll follow my Christ who loves me so, Wherever He leads I'll go.
It may be thru' the shadows dim, Or o'er the stormy sea,
I take my cross and follow Him, Wherever He leadeth me.
Wherever He leads I'll go, Wherever He leads I'll go,
I'll follow my Christ who loves me so, Wherever He leads I'll go.
My heart, my life, my all I bring To Christ who loves me so;
he is my Master, Lord, and King, Wherever He leads I'll go.
Wherever He leads I'll go, Wherever He leads I'll go,
I'll follow my Christ who loves me so, Wherever He leads I'll go.
Sermon: Today we are going to learn even more about Paul’s writing as he continues the first letter written to Timothy. Now, remember, these are brand new Christians. They are still learning what to expect from God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Some of them are learning after separating themselves from polytheism which was all over the place in Lystra where Timothy brought Jesus to the masses. It is very important, as Paul shares, to “test the spirits” that surround them. Not only that, but it’s also important to “test your own spirit” as well. We can’t grow in the Holy Spirit if we don’t build that same Holy Spirit up within us. This is what Paul shares first in this chapter.
1 Timothy 4:1 KJV – Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
NIV –The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
There are deceptive spirits everywhere doing the work of Satan. This is something that was well known, even as far back as the Garden of Eden. We all know what happened there. Here Paul is tracing wickedness and more all the way back to the historical scrolls like this one here.
1 Kings 13:18 KJV –He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
NIV –The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” (But he was lying to him.)
He adds to this historical view from the prophetic book of the prophet Jeremiah.
Jeremiah 23:26 KJV – How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart;
NIV – How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds?
Paul now adds in some very specific words as shared by our Savior Jesus in the gospels of Matthew, Luke and John the Beloved.
Matthew 18:7 KJV – Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
NIV – Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!
Luke 17:1 KJV – Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!
NIV – Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.
John 16:13 KJV – Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
NIV – But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
Paul then tops this off with the words from Luke’s writing of the Acts of the Apostles.
Acts 20:23 KJV – Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.
NIV – I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me.
Acts 21:11 KJV – And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.
NIV – Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”
Now Paul is pointing out the “false teachings” that can happen even in the best and strongest of churches. We’ve seen a lot of this in the recent “mega” churches around the USA. It’s very much a real problem that has not stopped in any way even two thousand years from the resurrection. Here is what Paul shares next in his first letter to Timothy.
1 Timothy 4:2 KJV – Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
NIV –Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
Again Paul goes back to the historical and prophetic scrolls of Scripture.
1 Kings 22:22 KJV –And the Lord said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so.
NIV – “‘By what means?’ the Lord asked. “‘I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said. “‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it.’
Isaiah 9:15 KJV – The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.
NIV – the elders and dignitaries are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail.
Jeremiah 23:26 KJV – How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart;
NIV – How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds?
He also adds insight from his letter to Ephesus.
Ephesians 4:19 KJV – Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
NIV – Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
Something we see even today is changing diets. In some cases those are necessary. However, we don’t often see Scriptural considerations in the diet industry of this world today. We also see strict cultural considerations as to race, and more regarding marriage. God wants us to marry just as he joined Adam to Eve as the first marriage in this world. He doesn’t want that to stop. He also doesn’t want us to rush to judgement in the realm of marriage and diet as well. Every person is an individual with God-given free will and they need to be such, in order to fulfill the design and creation that God managed so long ago. This is what Paul shares to the church where Timothy preaches there in Lystra, next.
1 Timothy 4:3 KJV – Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
NIV – They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.
Paul then goes back to Creation for this reference.
Genesis 1:29 KJV – And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
NIV – Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.
Genesis 9:3 KJV – Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
NIV – Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.
He adds just one reference to the Word as shared by Jesus Christ.
Matthew 15:11 KJV – Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
NIV – What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”
Paul then adds to this with his letters written to Rome, Corinth, and Colossae.
Romans 14:6 KJV – He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
NIV – Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.
1 Corinthians 10:30 KJV –For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
NIV –If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
Colossians 2:16 KJV – Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
NIV – Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.
Colossians 2:23 KJV – Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
NIV – Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
If we are of God and act Godly, then we should know that we are God’s children. Remember, God created every person, and creature for a purpose here under heaven. He did the same for all the plants from grass to flowers, to grains, trees, and more. Everything on this earth has a purpose within it. This should be met with thanksgiving and praise and welcomed into our diet, our life experience, in as many ways as possible.
1 Timothy 4:4-5 KJV – For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
NIV –For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
Again Paul returns to the story of creation in the scroll of Genesis.
Genesis 1:25 KJV – And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
NIV – God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:31 KJV – And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
NIV – God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
He then adds to this with a verse from the gospel of Luke where Jesus shares something important for all of us to understand in regard to life, living, and sharing life with everything and everyone.
Luke 11:41 KJV – But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
NIV – But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
Paul adds more of the writings of Luke in the Acts of the Apostles here.
Acts 10:15 KJV – And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
NIV – The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
Paul then includes references to his letters to Rome, and Corinth.
1 Corinthians 10:26-30 KJV –For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof. If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. But if any man say unto you, this is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience? For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
NIV – for, “The earth is the
Lord’s, and everything in it.”
If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put
before you without raising questions of conscience. But if
someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it,
both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. I
am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom
being judged by another’s conscience? If I take part in the
meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God
for?
The last reference for this verse comes from the writings of the Hebrew prophets.
Hebrews 11:3 KJV – Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
NIV – By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
One thing that people have issues with even to this day is “remembrance”. Jesus taught how important it is to remember the Word as God wrote it through the inspiration of writers like Moses, Isaiah, and many more. Here is how Paul is training Timothy in the methodology of preaching in the name of Jesus Christ as a “Christian Minister”.
1 Timothy 4:6 KJV – If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
NIV – If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
Here Paul references an interesting anecdote from Jesus when He Himself was teaching about how to treasure the Word for what it is. You see, the WORD IS FROM GOD as WE ARE FROM GOD. So we MUST learn the WORD and every aspect of it. This is what Jesus shares here.
Matthew 13:52 KJV – Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.
NIV – He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”
We cannot forget that the Apostles and Disciples all had the most wonderful opportunity to be there for all the events that Jesus was alive for on earth, and then also when Jesus was on earth after the resurrection. We see this deep respect and understanding in the words of the gospel writer Luke and also in his recording of the Acts of the Apostles.
Luke 1:3 KJV – It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
NIV – With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
Acts 1:15 KJV – And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
NIV – In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty)
Paul then adds references to his second letter to Corinth and his letter to Philippi.
2 Corinthians 11:23 KJV –Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.
NIV –Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again.
Philippians 2:20-22 KJV – or I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.
NIV – I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.
Our last two verses from the first letter Paul wrote to Timothy have a specific aim. They are to focus the congregation and the leadership of that congregation, to put out the bad, profane, old wives tales and to ensure they exercise their faith and godliness just as much, if not more so, than their bodies alone.
1 Timothy 4:7-8 KJV – But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
NIV – Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
Now, Paul goes to the most complicated scroll of all of Scripture, and that’s Job. The reason this book is so difficult is because Job, regardless that he is a devout Jewish man, he doesn’t understand that what he sees and experiences is not a curse because he was not a good person. It was an exercise in futility to see what it would take to break him away from the faith in God. Once Job understood, he turned back to God in full and remained as such for what was left of his life, filled with love, hope, peace, and prosperity. This is what Paul wants us to realize. Sure, we had everything once, and lost it in too many ways, some of them terrible and tragic, but we are still here to spread the truly unconditional love that God portrays every day in our very existence here on this earth.
Job 36:11 KJV – If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
NIV – If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment.
Paul adds to this with the writings of King David and the wisdom of King Solomon.
Psalm 37:9-11 KJV – For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
NIV – For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.
Proverbs 19:23 KJV – The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
NIV – The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.
Proverbs 22:24 KJV – Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
NIV – Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered,
Paul then adds more wisdom from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as shared in the gospel of Matthew here and then the words of the Hebrew prophets.
Matthew 6:33 KJV – But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
NIV – But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 12:32 KJV – And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
NIV – Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
Hebrews 5:14 KJV – But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
NIV – But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
It takes work to understand Scripture in full. It takes practice to see it working within us and around us. These are things that people who have learned to understand and apply God’s Word into their lives can easily manage to see, hear, and feel in their lives. Paul points out the importance of our willingness to learn in Spiritual ways that carry over into our physical, mental, verbal and otherwise ordinary daily lives. Scripture is meant to be taught for all to learn, understand, and apply to their individual lives so that they collectively will fulfill the mission that Jesus Christ created for humanity until the moment of the Second Coming. With this inspiration from our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, let’s show each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:
Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Matthew 6:9-13)
Closing Song: Softly and Tenderly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRyc_GjSv7w
Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling for you and for me. See on the portals He's waiting and watching. Watching for you and for me.
Come home, come home Ye who are weary come home. Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling. Calling, "O sinner come home"
O for the wonderful love He has promised. Promised for you and for me Though we have sinned He has mercy and pardon. Pardon for you and for me.
Come home, come home. Ye who are weary come home. Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling. Calling, "O sinner come home". Come home, come home (come home) Ye who are weary come home. Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling. Calling, "O sinner come home".
