Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our combined written and live Sunday sermon. You will normally see us posted in written and live form on Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love and sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Christ Jesus in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

-      We heard on Friday that my daughter-in-law’s grandfather passed away.

-      We learned last week that my Aunt Renee was in the hospital undergoing a procedure due to a blocked vein in her heart, and we haven’t heard anything in that regard since, so let’s pray for healing and hope.

-      We continue our prayers for Evangelist Cal Jennings, that his health becomes steadier than it has for far too long. We pray that his medical needs are fully met, and he has all that he requires for comfort and peace.

-      We continue our prayers for JB and EB as they navigate through the maze of medical tests and specialists to get all the answers they need in both of their health issues. They have too much red tape and confusion going on with their issues between insurance and doctor appointments.

-      We continue to pray for a friend of ours, Erica, who is in desperate need to improve her current situation and has set up a site for donations to help her with this. If you want more information, send me a private message and I’ll pass on the information.

-      We continue to pray for my sister Emilie, who is still having family issues, job issues, and all kinds of craziness going on in her life.

-      We pray for my son-in-law, Douglas, who has been suffering from unknown health issues that are still awaiting full diagnosis.

-      We pray for a co-worker of my daughter Deanna, named Ms. Ramona, who is still having health issues that are not dissipating.

-      We continue with our prayers for my niece Autumn, who has been suffering seizures due to a head injury from a car crash.

-      We continue to pray for my Mama who has had a lot of anxiety issues lately. Her car ended up being totaled after the fender-bender. This combined with the fact she misses my father as he passed away three years ago due to COVID-19 has made it a tough year for her.

-      We continue to pray for all sufferers and survivors of the various types of cancer, including my Aunt Donna and my friend Kelly.

-      We pray for those who are in the path of dangerous weather around this world, as well as those who are picking up the pieces after the very dangerous storms we have had over the past few months.

-      We pray for the various outreach ministries we have joined with, with their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Pastor Amir Aneel, Sister Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, and others in Kissee, Nairobi, and other places in Kenya, Pakistan, and India.

-      We pray also for our American outreach ministries, including Rev. Lisa Tyler on the other side of Georgia from where I am and Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog with her ministry, Way Maker Messianic Jewish and Christian Center – USA as well.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we have so many to pray for. We pray for those who have been sick or injured this past two weeks or more, including EB and JB, Aunt Renee, Ms. Ramona, and others we care about. We pray for those suffering diseases that seem incurable here on earth, like cancer, as suffered by Donna and Kelly. Or seizures like my niece Autumn, and severe allergic reactions like my nephew, but we know that You can heal and help those who are suffering. We pray for those in this world who suffer from memory loss, like my son-in-law’s grandparents, and JB’s mother as well. We pray for the orphans so they will be well fed and cared for. We pray for those who have lost loved ones this week, including my daughter-in-law Victoria who lost her maternal grandfather this past week. We thank You for all that You bring to each and every one of us. We bring everyone to You for healing and health, faith and hope, peace and patience through our Savior Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: Today we are continuing the second letter that Paul wrote to Timotheus. Now, we are covering the last six verses of the first chapter today. They are split – as shared in the New International Version, between verse 14 and verse 15. The title between them is “Examples of Loyalty and Disloyalty”.

The verses that are before that, as we covered last week, share a request Paul makes for loyalty toward the gospels and for the second letter he has written to Timotheus. These are very important instructions, no matter the era we are speaking of. Today we are starting halfway through that specific request.

2 Timothy 1:13 KJV –Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

NIV –What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.

Transformational teaching started long before we heard such an ideal here in this century. Our faith transforms us from who we started as to where we are fulfilling the hopes and dreams of our Heavenly Father, who helped us learn to transform through the Word as shared by Jesus Christ. However, even Jesus had assistance through God, and it was portrayed throughout the history of this world. We see that in the words of King Solomon, second king of Israel.

Proverbs 3:18 KJV – She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

NIV – She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.

Proverbs 8:14 KJV – Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

NIV – Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight, I have power.

Now Paul continues with references all over Scripture. These three include the Hebrew Prophets, Peter, and John the Beloved.

Hebrews 8:5 KJV – Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

NIV – They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

2 Peter 1:20-21 KJV –Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

NIV –Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

1 John 2:24 KJV –Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

NIV –As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.

Paul wanted those men, women, and children, who were reading or listening to his letters to gain strength from the gift of the Holy Spirit, just as he had been when first visited by the Holy Ghost upon the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s important to understand just how transformational that was for the twelve Apostles. It’s also important for the truth of Jesus Christ and His walk upon this earth, as a human being and then through the Holy Spirit for thousands of years now. We each have the opportunity to experience the Holy Spirit, and many times we’ll not even realize His Spirit is with us always. This is what Paul portrays in his letter to Timothy here.

2 Timothy 1:14 KJV –That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

NIV –Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

The Holy Spirit is a powerful gift that has been seen in many ways throughout Scripture. Being a part of God, just as Jesus would be. Think of the Holy Trinity like this, God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are one and the same, yet they are as unique as we all are. God can do, see, be, know, everything as the omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent being that He is. Jesus Christ is unconditional love personified, our path of faith, the way, truth, and life for all humanity. The Holy Spirit is that invisible spark found in true faith and belief, helping us along that path Jesus brought for us. It is our individual and collective sense of conscience. This is how King Solomon and Ezekiel portray the connections of the Holy Trinity.

Proverbs 4:23 KJV – Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

NIV – Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 KJV – A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

NIV – I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

Here is how Jesus portrays the connectivity of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit as shared in the gospel of John the Beloved.

John 14:17 KJV – Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

NIV – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

John 14:26 KJV But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

NIV – But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

This is how the gospel writer Luke shared the idea of portraying loyalty toward God and Jesus through the Holy Spirit.

Acts 20:28 KJV – Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

NIV – Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

Here are four other points of view on the Holy Spirit, our Lord and Savior Jesus, and God Himself.

Romans 8:11 KJV – But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

NIV – And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

Jude 1:20-21 KJV – But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

NIV – But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

1 Peter 1:5 KJV – Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

NIV –who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

1 John 2:27 KJV –But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

NIV –As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

Paul has a valid worry, which he portrays here in the letter.

2 Timothy 1:15 KJV –This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

NIV –You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

One thing even Jesus realized when He lived was in the fact that you can talk, write, and act in a thousand directions but there’s only one direction we should go. That is toward Him! Paul points toward those who are falling away from the path. He has plenty of historical viewpoints as to this factor in life. Everyone falls at some point. Paul doesn’t want Timotheus to feel as though he has been abandoned. This is something that historically has occurred more often than not. In today’s world, people can feel this acutely on a day to day basis depending on what happens in that day. Here’s what his go-to prophet has to say.

Isaiah 1:4 KJV – Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

NIV – Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the Lord; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.

Paul adds these references from our Savior Jesus Christ and the gospels of Matthew and John the Beloved.

Matthew 24:10 KJV – And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

NIV – At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,

John 6:66 KJV – From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

NIV – From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

Paul adds references to the gospel writer Luke as well, in the Acts of the Apostles.

Acts 19:10 KJV – And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

NIV – This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

Acts 19:16 KJV – And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

NIV – Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

Paul has one last reference to the Hebrew prophets.

Hebrews 10:25 KJV – Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

NIV – not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

At this point in the letter to Timothy as this chapter comes to a close, Paul is sharing blessings for some of the members of the congregation there at Lystra with Timotheus.

2 Timothy 1:16 KJV –The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

NIV – May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.

Paul again references the poetic and prophetic books of the Old Testament with these two entries.

Proverbs 11:25 KJV – The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

NIV – A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Isaiah 58:7 KJV – Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

NIV – Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Paul then adds two references from the Lord Jesus Christ. The first is from the Beatitudes, as shared during the Sermon on the Mount seen in the view of Matthew and also Luke as well.

Matthew 5:7 KJV – Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

NIV – Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Luke 6:38 KJV – Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

NIV – Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Paul adds to this with the writings of Luke from the Acts of the Apostles, the Hebrew Prophets, Peter and John the Beloved as well.

Acts 9:39-41 KJV – Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.

NIV – Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive.

Hebrews 6:10 KJV – For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

NIV – God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

1 Peter 4:9 KJV –Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

NIV –Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

1 John 3:17 KJV –But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

NIV –If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?

Paul is reminding them that there is always a need to make the time to seek God through Jesus Christ. He shares this with a memory of Timothy in Rome here as he sought to find Paul.

2 Timothy 1:17 KJV –But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

NIV – On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me.

In this Paul references the Acts of the Apostles, in six different points of the writing done by the gospel writer Luke.

Acts 9:28-29 KJV – And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem. And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.

NIV – So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. He talked and debated with the Hellenistic Jews, but they tried to kill him.

Acts 20:22-24 KJV – And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

NIV – “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.

Acts 21:13 KJV – Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

NIV – Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Acts 23:11 KJV – And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

NIV – The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”

Acts 26:17-18 KJV – Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

NIV – I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

Acts 28:30-31 KJV – And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.

NIV – For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness and without hindrance!

The last verse of this chapter has Paul offering a prayer for success on behalf of Timotheus and his congregation there at Lystra.

2 Timothy 1:18 KJV –The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

NIV – May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.

Paul references the beginning of this earth, and the first friend of God, Abraham.

Genesis 24:27 KJV – And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the Lord led me to the house of my master's brethren.

NIV – saying, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”

He continued with the reverence of Ruth and the prophecies of Samuel with the writings of King Solomon and the prophet Nehemiah.

Ruth 2:12 KJV – The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.

NIV – May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

1 Samuel 25:32-33 KJV –And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.

NIV –David said to Abigail, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself with my own hands.

Proverbs 19:17 KJV – He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

NIV – Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.

Nehemiah 5:19 KJV – Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.

NIV – Remember me with favor, my God, for all I have done for these people.

Paul then adds still more from our Savior Jesus Christ in the gospel of Matthew, and a last reference from the Hebrew prophets.

Matthew 25:35-40 KJV – For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

NIV –
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Paul wants to portray the church in the best light, a holy light, as a beacon of hope, a promise for peace on earth and good will to men. In this, we learn in present day that we can still seek God’s face and find it in the gift of unconditional love which portrays every promise of God in the expression of love that has no strings, no tethers to hold it away from us. Now, let’s show each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
