Chastising the Congregation at Corinth Carries a Warning for Us

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

-      We pray for the friends, family, and colleagues of Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point, a Christian organization, who was senselessly murdered on Wednesday in the middle of a conference with other Christians in Idaho, USA.

-      We pray for the victims and survivors of the September 11, 2001, World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Pennsylvania hillside tragedy that affected millions of Americans and continues to affect survivors of the tragedy to this very day.

-      We continue our prayers for Evangelist Cal Jennings, that his health becomes steadier than it has been for far too long. We pray that his medical needs are fully met, and he has all that he requires for comfort and peace.

-      We continue our prayers for JB and EB as they navigate through the maze of medical tests and specialists to get all the answers that they need in both of their health issues. They are continually frustrated with the runaround they have been getting with the various referrals.

-      We continue to pray for a friend of ours, Alexis, who is in desperate need to improve her current situation and has set up a site for donations to help her with this. If you want more information, send me a private message and I’ll pass on the information. 

-      We continue with our prayers for my niece Autumn, who has been suffering seizures due to a head injury from a car crash.

-      We continue to pray for my Mama who has had a lot of anxiety issues lately. We also pray for my sister’s sons who are still trying to cope with her sudden death two weeks ago, especially in light that her birthday would be two weeks from now.

-      We continue to pray for all sufferers and survivors of the various types of cancer, including several survivors of the disease, JB’s sister Debbie, our friend Alexis, my Aunt Donna, and my friend Kelly.

-      We pray for those who are in the path of dangerous weather, and other dangerous conditions, including volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, worldwide.

-      We pray for the various outreach ministries we have joined with, with their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Pastor Amir Aneel, Sister Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, and others in Kissee, Nairobi, and other places in Kenya, Pakistan, and India.

-      We pray also for our American outreach ministries, including Rev. Lisa Tyler on the other side of Georgia from where I am and Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog with her ministry, Way Maker Messianic Jewish and Christian Center – USA as well.

 

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father we have so much and so many to pray for this week. We pray for the family, friends, and colleagues of Charlie Kirk who was killed Wednesday. We pray for Your comfort and solace for the Christians who worked with him and his organization as well as those who were affected and influenced by the work that he had done. We pray for the survivors and the families of the victims of 9/11, that they too receive Your solace and comfort. We pray for all those on our prayer list who have been sick in any way, including JB, EB, Cal, and so many others. We pray for the members of our outreach ministries, including Wakas Gill and his ministry and Amir Aneel whose ministry and members have been suffering from massive floods in Pakistan. We pray for the rest of our outreach ministries and their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji and all the others who have requested prayers. We pray all this in Your Holy Name through our Savior Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: Today we are continuing Chapter six in 1st Corinthians. Paul continues chastising the members of this church. We’re only covering the next four verses due to the number of auxiliary verses involved. Now, something you have to understand with what Paul is saying in these four verses is that these people in the congregation, AND their leadership, are proving that they have gone completely astray from the path that Jesus forged for them. Paul pulls references from all over Scripture. So, we begin here.

1 Corinthians 6:7 KJV – Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?

NIV – The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?

 

Paul utilizes the poetic book written by King Solomon in three instances primarily.

 

Proverbs 17:14 KJV – The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

NIV – Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

 

Proverbs 20:22 KJV – Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

NIV – Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you.

 

Proverbs 25:8-10 KJV – Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another: Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.

NIV –   do not bring hastily to court, for what will you do in the end if your neighbor puts you to shame? If you take your neighbor to court, do not betray another’s confidence, or the one who hears it may shame you and the charge against you will stand.

 

Paul includes three gospel verses from Matthew and Luke in the words of Jesus Christ. He includes references from Peter, James the Just, and the Hebrew prophets.

 

Matthew 5:23-26 KJV – Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

NIV – “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

 

Matthew 5:39-40 KJV – But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

NIV – But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.

 

Luke 6:29-30 KJV – And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

NIV – If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.

 

James 4:1-2 KJV – From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

NIV –What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.

 

1 Peter 3:9 KJV – Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

NIV –Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

 

Hebrews 12:14 KJV – Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

NIV – Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

 

Paul continues to berate the people at the church in Corinth. He doesn’t waste words as he does so. This is not a friendly rebuke. It’s a commanding one.

 

1 Corinthians 6:8 KJV – Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.

NIV – Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.

 

Paul goes all the way back to the Torah and also the prophet Micah in the Old Testament.

 

Leviticus 19:18 KJV – Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.

NIV – “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.


Deuteronomy 32:35 KJV –
To me belongeth vengeance and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

NIV – It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.”


Micah 6:8 KJV –
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

NIV – He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.


He includes the gospels of Matthew and Luke in the words of Jesus Christ as well as the words of James the Just, younger brother of Jesus.

 

Matthew 5:41-42 KJV – And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

NIV – If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

 

Luke 6:27-31 KJV – But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

NIV – “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

 

James 5:6 KJV – Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

NIV – You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.

 

I had to include two verses with this next one because they are so interconnected. Paul is again reminding the church at Corinth regarding their wrongdoings.

 

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 KJV – Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

NIV – Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

 

Paul provides references in the Torah, poetic and prophetic books of the Old Testament including his go-to prophet Isaiah.

 

Leviticus 18:22 KJV – Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

NIV – “‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.

 

Leviticus 20:13 KJV – If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

NIV – “‘If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

 

Deuteronomy 22:5 KJV – The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.

NIV – A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.

 

Proverbs 23:20-21 KJV – Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

NIV – Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

 

Isaiah 5:20-23 KJV – Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink: Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

NIV – Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks, who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocent.

 

Paul includes more from the Word as Jesus spoke in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. He includes reference to the writings of Peter, Jude, and John the Beloved’s Revelation.

 

Matthew 7:21-23 KJV – Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

NIV – “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

 

Matthew 15:19 KJV – For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

NIV – For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

 

Mark 7:21-23 KJV – For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

NIV – For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

 

Luke 13:27 KJV – But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.

NIV – “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’

 

1 Peter 4:3 KJV –For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

NIV – For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.

 

Jude 1:7 KJV – Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

NIV – In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

 

Revelation 21:8 KJV – But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

NIV – But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

 

Revelation 22:15 KJV – For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

NIV – Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

 

Our final verse from this letter to Corinth is this one.

 

1 Corinthians 6:11 KJV – And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

NIV – And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

 

Paul points out that there is redemption available to those who repent from their sins. In the case of the members of the church there at Corinth, most of these sins are literally worthy of eternal death and damnation. That’s why he was so adamant that these people listen to what he was saying to them. Paul goes back to the prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel for reference and guidance.

 

Isaiah 1:18 KJV – Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

NIV – “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

 

Ezekiel 36:25-27 KJV – Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

NIV – I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

Paul’s final four references include the words of Luke in the Acts of the Apostles, the Hebrew prophets, and John the Beloved.

 

Acts 22:16 KJV – And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

NIV – And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’

 

Hebrews 10:22 KJV – Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

NIV –let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

 

1 John 1:7 KJV – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

NIV – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

 

Revelation 1:5 KJV – And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

NIV –  and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

 

We have a long way to go to get back to the path of redemption that Jesus paved as He noted in His Word from John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

We have a lot to do to get back on that path Jesus built for us. That’s why it is so very important to remember the reason for our being here. His name is Jesus Christ, who comes from the great Jehovah God our Heavenly Father. It is through the life death, and eternal legacy of Jesus Christ that we are here today. Now, let’s show each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
