Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.
- We are still praying today for my dear friend JB who has finally been given limited ability to travel away from home two days per week for very short distances. Please keep JB in prayer for continued therapy, and continued doctor visits after her broken hip and upper leg. Please pray about the source of her extreme weight loss so that it can be solved. Please start praying again for her husband EB as well with his health and his muscles and movement as he has serious mobility issues. Add to them her sister-in-law who is suffering from cancer at this time.
- Pray for my son-in-law’s younger sister who lost two babies before twelve weeks gestation in the past six months.
- Pray for that same son-in-law’s grandfather Wayne Shelton, who had a stroke this past week.
- My employer’s sister passed away three days ago, so please pray for the entire family as they prepare to say goodbye.
- Evangelist Cal Jennings is home after rehabilitation after losing his fingertips to serious third-degree burns. He is still healing very slowly and has slow, arduous therapy for his remaining fingers in their shaping and movement. Please pray for his healing and that his pain is treated like it should be treated, not as an afterthought.
- We continue to pray for my Mama who has had a lot of issues lately in her life. Please keep her in prayer for her anxieties, fears, and general well-being.
- Please pray for one of my sisters, who has a need for something new right now in regard to her career after frustration with a job she is currently within that did not turn out to be anything like it was portrayed to her. She has had several interviews and has another one on Monday. Please pray that she receives positive results.
- We continue to pray for a friend of ours, Alexis, who is in desperate need to improve her current situation and is seeking to sell things she owns to help her with this. If you want more information, send me a private message and I’ll pass on the information.
- We continue to pray for all sufferers and survivors of the various types of cancer, including several survivors of the disease, Evangelist Cal Jennings’ brother-in-law David Doyle, JB’s sister Debbie, Jerry, our friend Alexis, my Aunt Donna, and my friend Kelly.
- We pray for those who are in the path of dangerous weather, and other dangerous conditions, including wildfires, smoke from those wildfires, storms, flooding, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, worldwide like those in South America earlier this past month.
- We pray for the family, friends, and fans of several celebrities who have left this side of life this past week including Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, Hayden Panatierre, Peter Cullen, Samuel Monroe, Jr., Jaye P. Morgan, Debbie Clark, Shelley Fabares, and Norway’s King Harald V.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we have a great deal of things to pray for and a great many as well. We pray for EB and JB and their health issues. We pray for their sister-in-law who has cancer as well. We pray for those who were lost or have survived the massive flooding in Nepal. We pray for the ones in the path of the erupting Mount Etna in Sicily. We pray for those in the path of the wildfires up north in Canada right now and for those affected by the smoke that is drifting for hundreds of miles. We pray for those who are in the path of the various hurricanes and tropical storms. We pray for the many who are injured and ill in our ministry, our friends, including Cal, our family, and more. We pray for the homeless and the helpless around this world. We pray for the many victims of violence, prejudice, and terrorism in this world. We pray for those still under the thumb of slavery and oppression. We pray for the unjustly persecuted and prosecuted. We pray for the friends and family who have been fighting cancer. We pray for those who survived cancer, including Kelly, Alexis, David, and Debbie and many more, that they continue to remain well. We pray for the nations at war. We pray for all this in Your Holy Name through our Savior Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.
Opening Song: Amazing Grace
Sermon: Today we are continuing Chapter 14 of 1st Corinthians. We will cover the next six verses and there’s a lot to go over with this. We begin where we left last week with this verse here. Again, Paul is explaining the best way to conduct services and sermons and teaching and preaching in the church. In this case, he speaks of judgment, specifically to ensure that what is said or heard is not misinterpreted or misrepresented. That’s important, and was extremely important in the years after our Savior ascended into heaven.
1 Corinthians 14:29 KJV – Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
NIV – Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.
Here is one Old Testament Torah verse for reference.
Deuteronomy 18:21-22 KJV – And if thou say in
thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?
22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the
thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not
spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid
of him.
NIV – You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.
We have four New Testament references for this one from the Acts of the Apostles and the first letter that John the Beloved wrote.
Acts
13:1-3 KJV – Now
there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as
Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen,
which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost
said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on
them, they sent them away.
NIV – Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
Acts 15:32 KJV – And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.
NIV – Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers.
Acts 17:11 KJV – These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
NIV – Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
1 John 4:1 KJV – Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
NIV –Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Sometimes it is important to pay attention to your congregation. This is what Paul points toward next. It is important to realize that there are those who can be motivated by the Holy Spirit to bring profound meaning to the Word and that’s something we find an issue with even to this moment in time. Whenever I hear something, someone says regarding Scripture that makes me stop and really listen, I realize God is speaking. That’s a skill that God wants us to develop with each other. It is why testimonies are so important for ministry in all points of view. That’s what Paul shares here.
1 Corinthians 14:30 KJV –If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
NIV – And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop.
Paul references three Old Testament views with this one, the second of which is referenced in popular culture quite often and still, to this day, remains relevant to this world.
Job 32:11-12 KJV – Behold,
I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out
what to say.
12 Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you
that convinced Job, or that answered his words:
NIV
– I waited while you spoke, I listened to your reasoning; while you were
searching for words,
12 I gave you my full attention. But not one of you has proved
Job wrong; none of you has answered his arguments.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 KJV – To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
NIV – There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.
Daniel 7:15-16 KJV – I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. 16 I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.
NIV – “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the
visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. 16 I
approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.
“So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things:
Paul includes this one gospel verse with one from the Acts of the Apostles.
Luke 10:39-42 KJV – And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at
Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered
about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my
sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many
things:
42 But one thing is needful: and
Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
NIV – She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the
Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was
distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and
asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by
myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the
Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about
many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has
chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Acts 10:9-11 KJV – On the morrow, as
they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the
housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while
they made ready, he fell into a trance,
11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon
him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the
earth:
NIV – About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.
Paul includes more from the younger human sibling of our Savior and John the Beloved’s first letter.
James 1:19 KJV – Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
NIV –My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
1 John 4:1 KJV –Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
NIV –Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Paul includes this one about taking turns. This is also important, not just for ministry, but for life in general. We teach this skill to our children but will often forget to do so as adults. Rank and file tend to get in the way so often.
1 Corinthians 14:31 KJV – For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
NIV – For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.
Paul shares three Old Testament points of view for this one.
Numbers 11:29 KJV – And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!
NIV – But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!”
Nehemiah 8:8 KJV – So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
NIV – They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.
Joel 2:28-29 KJV – And
it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh;
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream
dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those
days will I pour out my spirit.
NIV – “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
Paul includes one New Testament view from the Hebrew prophets.
Hebrews 10:21-25 KJV – And having an high priest over the house of God;22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
NIV – and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Now, Paul provides an interesting distinction regarding spirits, human spirits and divine spirits are very, very different. That’s something that people don’t often understand. This is the reason Paul chose to teach the church at Corinth that there is a distinction, and we all should recognize this fact. This is what Paul shares.
1 Corinthians 14:32 KJV –And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
NIV –The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.
Here are two Old Testament references from the Poetic Scrolls.
Proverbs 16:32 KJV – He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
NIV – Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.
Proverbs 29:11 KJV – A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.
NIV –Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.
Here are two additional references from the Apostles Peter and John the Beloved’s Revelation.
2 Peter 1:21 KJV –For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
NIV – For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Revelation 19:10 KJV – And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
NIV –At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”
Our next verse describes exactly what God is supposed to be for one and all. This verse also portrays something that we often forget to truly think about. Prophets, Apostles, and ministers after the resurrection, and even ever since, have called Yeshu Ha Notzri Jesus Christ of Nazareth the Prince of Peace. Here is an origin story for that distinction.
1 Corinthians 14:33 KJV –For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
NIV – For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.
Paul shares one Old Testament point of view for this. Now, this specific verse is very, very significant, and extremely relevant to our faith and belief system known as Christianity. It also reiterates the existence of our Savior and the bringer of our Salvation and His station in this world and beyond.
Isaiah 9:6 KJV – For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
NIV – For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Paul includes four New Testament points to consider including one from the gospel written by John the Beloved, in which Yeshu Ha Notzri Jesus Christ of Nazareth provides us an answer to the pain, sorrow, and fear in our souls and proves the previous verse from the prophet Isaiah as pinpoint in its accuracy. There is another written by James the Just, younger human brother of our Savior, one from the Hebrew prophets and a final one from the Apostle Peter.
John 14:27 KJV – Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
NIV – Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
James 3:6 KJV – And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
NIV – The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
Hebrews 13:20 KJV – Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
NIV –Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,
1 Peter 5:10 KJV –But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
NIV – And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
Our final verse is this controversial one. Earlier in 1 Corinthians 11:5, Paul explicitly gave instructions on how women should pray and prophesy out loud in public worship, showing that this specific verse is a situational correction regarding disruptive questioning, not a total silencing of women's voices. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard that this means women cannot say anything, preach, or teach in church. That is, categorically, false, and those who teach this do not realize that we are meant to be equals, not adversaries as men and women in church.
1 Corinthians 14:34 KJV –Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.
NIV –Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.
One reference comes from the Old Testament in the Torah.
Numbers 30:3-16 KJV – If a woman also vow a
vow unto the Lord, and bind herself by a bond, being in her father's house in
her youth; 4 And her father hear her vow, and her bond
wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her;
then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul
shall stand.
5 But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth;
not any of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall
stand: and the Lord shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her.
6 And if she had at all an husband, when she vowed, or uttered
ought out of her lips, wherewith she bound her soul;
7 And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her in the
day that he heard it: then her vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she
bound her soul shall stand.
8 But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard
it; then he shall make her vow which she vowed, and that which she uttered with
her lips, wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect: and the Lord shall
forgive her.
9 But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced,
wherewith they have bound their souls, shall stand against her.
10 And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul
by a bond with an oath;
11 And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and
disallowed her not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she
bound her soul shall stand.
12 But if her husband hath utterly made them void on the day he
heard them; then whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or
concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them
void; and the Lord shall forgive her.
13 Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her
husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.
14 But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day
to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon
her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he
heard them.
15 But if he shall any ways make them void after that he hath
heard them; then he shall bear her iniquity.
16 These are the statutes, which the Lord commanded Moses,
between a man and his wife, between the father and his daughter, being yet in
her youth in her father's house.
NIV –“When
a young woman still living in her father’s household makes a vow to the Lord or
obligates herself by a pledge 4 and her father hears about her
vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all her vows and every pledge by
which she obligated herself will stand. 5 But if her father
forbids her when he hears about it, none of her vows or the pledges by which
she obligated herself will stand; the Lord will release her because her father
has forbidden her.
6 “If she marries after she makes a vow or after her lips utter
a rash promise by which she obligates herself 7 and her husband
hears about it but says nothing to her, then her vows or the pledges by which
she obligated herself will stand. 8 But if her husband forbids
her when he hears about it, he nullifies the vow that obligates her or the rash
promise by which she obligates herself, and the Lord will release her.
9 “Any vow or obligation taken by a widow or divorced woman
will be binding on her.
10 “If a woman living with her husband makes a vow or obligates
herself by a pledge under oath 11 and her husband hears about
it but says nothing to her and does not forbid her, then all her vows or the
pledges by which she obligated herself will stand. 12 But if
her husband nullifies them when he hears about them, then none of the vows or
pledges that came from her lips will stand. Her husband has nullified them, and
the Lord will release her. 13 Her husband may confirm or
nullify any vow she makes or any sworn pledge to deny herself. 14 But
if her husband says nothing to her about it from day to day, then he confirms
all her vows or the pledges binding on her. He confirms them by saying nothing
to her when he hears about them. 15 If, however, he nullifies
them some time after he hears about them, then he must bear the consequences of
her wrongdoing.”
16 These are the regulations the Lord gave Moses concerning
relationships between a man and his wife, and between a father and his young
daughter still living at home.
Our final two references come from the writings of the Apostle Peter in his first letter.
1
Peter 3:1-2 KJV –Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands;
that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the
conversation of the wives;
2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
NIV –Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
1 Peter 3:4 KJV –But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
NIV –Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
There is a lot to understand when it comes to speaking Biblical truth, Gospel truth, Prophecy, speaking in tongues, and also when it comes to who has the right to speak within the church. This entire chapter has been outlining all of those aspects of worship and faith and belief. We have a lot of work to do together to understand everything. The best way we can bring more faith and belief together with others is by showing each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Now, that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us.
Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
