The Gifts of Grace Through God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit

Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our sermon or midweek study. You will normally see us posted on Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love. It doesn’t conform to society’s wishes. This ministry shares the Word of God, the Spirit of Christ Jesus. Those who know me well will recognize that there are definitive differences in the creation of every sermon from this point forward. It is God’s will that has brought this to be. We wish only that God’s truth will be shared within His words as brought to us by the Spirit as it fills my heart, mind, and soul to be shared with my hands, but with His words alone.

You will find us in the following location: http://www.covenantofhopeministries.blogspot.com

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

- Please continue to pray for Elder Cal Jennings and his health issues, which are numerous. He has been having issues with his pain, vision, and memory. Add to the prayers with a need for new housing as the family is in dire straits there at this point in time.

- We are ever watchful in regard to the weather, the unrest, and the virus and response to that virus. Let us pray for calm skies and seas, calm voices and spirits, and also healthy outcomes for those who are affected.

- We pray that the upcoming school year is filled with progress for our children who are attending and for the teachers and staff that must adapt to what is considered the “new normal” around this world.

- Pray for five of my family members as they go through some dramatic changes in some cases. They asked not to be mentioned by name, but God knows who they are.

- Be thankful for each day we live as we do not know what tomorrow brings.

- Pray for our outreach ministries with Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Robert Nganwa, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Rev. Lisa Tyler, and all the others who have joined us.

- Pray for our nations that the voice of God be heard through the Spirit.

- Pray for our friends and families that their tomorrows bring blessings and pray our own be the same.

- Pray for those suffering as a result of the terrors that have occurred just this past week around this world.

- Pray for our sick and wounded that they may heal.

- Pray that truth is revealed where falsehoods have been shared around this world.

Birthday Greeting: Sending a belated birthday greeting to my sister, Emilie Newman. Her birthday was Friday.

Prayer: Father in heaven, this is our prayer for today. We bring our sick and wounded up in prayer, whether family, friends, or colleagues. We pray for answers to mysteries for health issues and money issues with several members and family members. We pray for our poor and desolate, our brothers and sisters who have been brought devastation due to the terrors around this world and all of the natural disasters, storms, and so forth this past weeks. We pray for those in our outreach ministries that their reach gains momentum and all their immediate needs are met. For each of these we pray in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: We are working through Chapter 4 in Ephesians. Truthfully we have learned quite a lot regarding how Paul took it upon himself to teach as Jesus had once taught him, and as Jesus had instructed all of His faithful Apostles, disciples, and followers to do. Ephesus and the Ephesians who lived there turned out to be a very receptive citizenry.

Ephesians 4:8 KJV – Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

Now, some might have issues understanding the traditional King James translation of this. This is the view of the New International translation.

NIV- This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.

We have to work through Scripture, sometimes over and over again, in order to understand the work Jesus wishes us to manage during our lifetimes on this earth. Every path is different, and every lesson holds many other lessons within it. This allows us to discern more and more when it comes to our part in life through the gift of God’s Word. The verse in Ephesians returns us to the Old Testament here.

Psalm 68:18 KJV – Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the Lord God might dwell among them.

David, sharing the Word of God in this psalm shows us that even if we feel held back, perhaps shackled to the worldly chaos we see around us, there is something we can do to push that all aside and bring God’s unconditional love toward us. It’s an absolute gift to manage learning this lesson and sharing it with those willing to listen and hear. We see here an inner thought from Paul sharing what occurred when Christ died on the cross and was buried in His earthly tomb.

Ephesians 4:9 KJV – (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

A good while ago I shared with you a sermon on what seeing, and hearing, should be considered as when it comes to God’s Word. Well, here we see the reference toward that very thought in what Jesus shares with His disciples.

Matthew 13:17 KJV – For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

All of the Apostles and Disciples took the lessons Jesus taught and carried them to as many as would listen and hear and apply God’s Word to life as they lived it. They went wherever they were welcomed, and often far distances from Jerusalem. Here we see Paul’s thoughts in Rome, which simply repeats the words Jesus shared, without being a direct quote.

Romans 16:25 KJV – Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

The secret of Jesus and His future existence in the timeline of God’s choosing was only known as the Salvation of Mankind. None of them truly knew who would bring this opportunity to the ordinary citizens. Nor did they know how, or why they would be redeemed and again accepted as citizens of heaven upon the end of this world we know now. Today we know that our history is just that, history, when we accept Jesus in our hearts and share the fact with everyone willing to listen and hear. It is our work, even in the worst of circumstances, sharing Christ’s love for us, that will offer redemption and freedom of voice, freedom of choice, in eternal life. Peter shares this here.

1 Peter 1:10-12 KJV – Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

Peter and Paul did a lot of teaching and preaching, as John the Beloved and others did the same. They just chose different places to share that knowledge and wisdom with others. Here we are with Paul in Ephesus sharing what it was like to understand the death and resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 4:10-11 KJV – He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some pastors and teachers;

Now, this one is easily remembered as the moment when Jesus gave us all the Great Commission as it is known. Jesus wanted everyone to be taught, the way He had taught the Apostles and disciples that had followed Him in His life here on earth.

Matthew 28:16-20 KJV – Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

This also relates to this next verse shared. However, in order to give you more context in which to figure out the best way to understand what gifts God gives each of us through the Holy Spirit, though not equally, these gifts are something that help us stay together as Christians. They create within our spirits a sense of family, of belonging, and being one with Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:27-31 KJV – Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.

These gifts of the Holy Spirit are never equally the same in any one person. It is for this reason that they are gifts. No one is 100% identical to someone else. Even identical twins have their differences, even though they might look and sound the same. Every one of us has an individual spirit, and the freedom of choice, a God-given gift from the very beginning. It is that choice that makes each of us different, even when we pursue the same things. We all go through these sort of proving grounds where we test our faith and our commitment to sharing God’s word. That’s what is shared in the next verse here.

Ephesians 4:12 KJV – For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Each and every person who believes in God’s Word, and the truth of Jesus Christ and His existence and the reason for it, would be part of the Body of Christ, or the Christian Church as many call it these days. All of us who believe even without seeing Him in person here and now, learn well what the grace of God has brought to our lives individually and collectively. That’s why we attend church, have prayer meetings or Scripture studies. We need to hear our voices combine in the glory of God and the grace of Jesus our Savior. This is to remind us that God is as He was, and as He always will be. Just as this verse shares in the Scroll of Isaiah.

Isaiah 43:13 KJV – Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?

The Word is as it was and as it will always be, world without end. We need to remember that. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)

Opening Song: Home Free ~ How Great Thou Art https://youtu.be/tXQpDDcrN-w

Sermon: We are now beginning Chapter 3 in Ephesians. Paul is sharing that even with the threat, or even promise, of prison, he was going to continue sharing the Word of God through his time as an Apostle of Christ. This is something that is actually documented beyond Scripture. Paul wanted everyone to see that even though he suffered, God and Jesus were always with him through the grace and goodness of the Holy Spirit, a gift left behind by Jesus upon His ascension into heaven.

Ephesians 3:1-2 KJV – For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

Paul is sharing that the people of Ephesus needed to see that grace is an eternal gift of God. That’s why Jesus preached to everyone willing to hear, including the Gentiles and others beyond the Jews. God’s grace is for everyone that understands and accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior. These supporting verses share Paul’s perspective regarding his role in sharing the glory of God.

Colossians 1:25 KJV – Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

Romans 12:3 KJV – For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Colossi is an interesting place to preach, much the same as Ephesus. There are many in history in Greece and Rome who would simply absorb as much of the world as they could to learn what those other cultures had that were beneficial to the majority, something that Paul and the other Apostles picked up on rather quickly. Acceptance of other cultures and the absorption of their methods, faiths, and so forth, has occurred all over the world for as far back as records were kept and beyond. The difference with Christianity, even from early years, would be in the fact that it was not transformed in the ways that law and other types of practices were as the Apostles and Disciples of Jesus brought His truth toward others. That’s where these next verses take us.

Ephesians 3:3-5 KJV – How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

What is the mystery? The mystery, often called a veil, or shroud, would be that which separated man from God’s knowledge, His love, faith, belief in the human race. It is the divine strength that was separated from us after Adam and Eve sinned so far in the past. When the Holy Spirit surrounded and filled the Apostles upon Jesus’s resurrection, that was much more than people may understand. The moment of the Holy Spirit settling in their hearts, the veil that had been ripped asunder was replaced by the eternal knowledge of God and His unconditional love. This is what Paul taught to the Galatians as shared here.

Galatians 1:12 KJV – For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Paul is reflecting back to the Word as Jesus shared here.

Matthew 13:17 KJV – For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Like many of us in this world, even Paul had to remind the early Christians how important it is to believe, to have faith, and to share that belief and faith with those around us. That’s what we are seeing here in this verse.

Romans 16:25 KJV – Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

Paul was just one of the Apostles who spent the rest of his life teaching the truth of Jesus and God to those who were willing to listen. Peter shared his own experiences and did so to prove that even mistakes as egregious as his denial of Christ on the day of His imprisonment prior to His crucifixion could be forgiven. That knowledge was powerful then, and is powerful now. All sins can be forgiven so long as we do not fall off the path and repeat them.

Now, this leads us to something that I have personally been asked about. The question is always the same. How can I be one with God if I have no purely Jewish background? Jesus solved that issue when He walked into the lands of the Gentiles and taught them the glory of God and His destiny to ensure all could be welcomed into the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 3:6-7 KJV – That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.

When the Great Commission was brought to the Apostles and Disciples of Christ, it was meant to encourage them to teach far beyond the borders of Israel, and not solely to the Jews. The Great Commission is shared here.

Matthew 28:18-20 KJV – And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Paul is sharing that great and glorious commission for all truly faithful Christians saying that, even in dire circumstances, and at the risk of their lives, they should, as we should today, continue bringing the Word of God to all who are willing to listen. Even in the Old Testament, God was sharing that this would happen and all would hear the Word of God willingly and follow His path to righteousness.

Isaiah 43:13 KJV – Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?

Remember, the Word was with God, before the creation of earth, humanity, and every creature that lives on, under or in the water that surrounds the earth. The Word was part of the creation and part of the existence of every man, woman, and child that has ever walked this earth. That is a powerful thought, a fascinating and awesome realization. Everyone, everything, would have a purpose for being on this earth and part of life as we all know it. It was ordained by God in the beginning with Adam and Eve and confirmed by the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. That’s something we all should be awed and amazed by. On top of that, we all should want to know more and more about the Word and how our lives can be better for the addition to our study and willingness to share with as many as will hear in this world around us.

Sermon: As we continue in our exploration of Ephesians, it’s time to delve even further into the thoughts and actions of the Apostles and Disciples as they worked to teach God’s Word and the gift of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. We start with the definition of omnipresence.

Omnipresence: adjective. To be present everywhere at the same time.

Now, with the definition in mind, let’s continue our exploration of Ephesians. This pair of verses, which bridge together from last week’s sermon to give clarity in the Word.

Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV – For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

When we read this verse aloud, we hear specific qualifications for our being brothers and sisters with Christ, and true children of God. That is grace. When we sing the song Amazing Grace, we are instantly brought to verses like these two in Ephesians. Paul was well aware of the learning experiences so many would never have first hand as he did with Jesus as one of the twelve Apostles. When God brings us back to the same verse at a different time in our lives, there’s always a good reason. That’s why refreshing our memories on the Word is something we all should pursue every day. We link this to Timothy’s epistle here.

2 Timothy 1:9 KJV – Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

No matter how far from home the twelve Apostles went after Christ’s resurrection, they were always brothers in Christ and kept in contact, regardless of the danger that brought to them. Here we see where Paul reflects on his time in Rome and speaking to the fledgling Christians in the earliest years of the church.

Romans 4:16 KJV – Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

The magic of God’s Word is that it is timeless. It fits every person’s life, and every moment of that life. This is the uniqueness of Scripture. It doesn’t matter how long ago the Word was put down on paper. It was already part of our existence from the beginning and should always be part of life as we know and experience it. That’s what John the Beloved shares here.

John 6:44 KJV – No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:65 KJV – And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

One of the many things people often wonder about is creation. The creation theory is something doctors, scientists, and many others have tried, in vain, to prove impossible. What they’ve done instead is prove that God’s Creation would be alive and well, and only as old as His unconditional love would be and the gift of Christ’s Holy Spirit, which still resides within us, even today. We are specially created individuals that have a lot in common, yet just enough differences to make us our own person. That’s the amazing gift of God’s Unconditional Love. We all have our own idiosyncrasies and yet they meet together when it comes to worshipping God and sharing Christ’s miracles with those around us.

Ephesians 2:10 KJV – For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Notice, this says exactly what was shared. We are God’s workmanship. We are in Christ Jesus as He is within us through the Holy Spirit. We are walking in His footsteps and should share our walk with Him and His walk with those around us and whomever we meet in life. Often in Scripture we see where we refer back to other verses within new verses we learn. This happens with all of Scripture. That’s why we go back to the first chapter of Ephesians here.

Ephesians 1:4 KJV – According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

We are chosen by Christ to spread the true Word of God. All of us, as Christians, are compelled to share what Jesus means to each of us. How we were brought to do what we do as part of the church that Christ built for the Father, our Father, God in heaven.

Ephesians 2:11 KJV – Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

We today aren’t Jews or Gentiles in the exact sense of the Scriptures in the Old Testament, or even the New Testament. We are CHRISTIANS. This is what it means to be circumcised in the Holy Spirit. We have chosen to follow Christ. That’s something we often have to contemplate, which direction we are being led toward as a truly faithful Christian. Some of us use words before actions. Some use actions before words. Still more let their works speak without words being necessary. The challenge is, we all have to realize this in our hearts and minds and also share that fact with each other. That’s what is shared here.

Acts 20:28 KJV – Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice. He died to prove that He lived beyond mortality. He went through unimaginable pain, suffering, and died alone hanging on that tree, the cross, in that hot sun thousands of years ago now. Those who loved Him dearly, as their brother, as their teacher, as their friend, suffered greatly spiritually and mentally on that long ago day when the world lost the Savior just to have Him usher in true salvation through the gift of the Holy Spirit. We go back to a verse where Jesus is speaking to Mary Magdalene after she finds the grave open and empty.

John 20:17 KJV – Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

Like all of the Apostles and Disciples, Mary Magdalene was ecstatic to see her teacher even if it wasn’t fully in the flesh. Seeing Him on the verge of full resurrection gave hope to every believer, that day and thousands of years in the future. He wasn’t a ghost. He wasn’t an apparition. He was, as He is, the bringer of salvation. Learning this as newly created Christians is something that takes a lot of faith in belief to know and understand. That’s what we see here with Paul sharing his journey with Jesus with the citizens of Ephesus.

Ephesians 2:12 KJV – That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

We have to realize it is no easy task to believe just by reading or hearing the Word of God. It is no easy task to teach unless we have others willing to listen and hear. It is not easy to practice what we preach in this world today. However, if we work at it, we build our spirits to be more with God and Christ through the gift of the Holy Spirit. It takes practice, always. That’s why we teach the same verses over and over again to show the versatility of God’s Word and His Unconditional Love.

Colossians 1:9 KJV – For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Isaiah 42:7 KJV – To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

In the verses just shared we see there is a reason for all that they went through in Scripture, to prove to those who came after their time on earth that faith can overcome anything and everything this crazy world can throw at us. It’s not about money, possessions, or how high up that social or economic ladder we climb. It’s about being one with God. It’s about understanding what it means to fulfill that connection with God. That’s why we as teachers and preachers work so hard to share our understanding of God’s Word and the gift of the Holy Spirit that spreads within us all and is shared as we share the effect and affect of being one with the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 2:13 KJV – But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Now we see geography being dismissed. It doesn’t matter how close in proximity we are as Christians. This is something that is definitely in focus in our world today with this virus and how quickly it can spread from one to the other. However, our faith, our belief, when we work them together even in the worst of times, brings us together, regardless of the fact that we might be anywhere from one to a thousand or more miles apart. This is something we all need to realize. God is everywhere, always. That is what we know of as OMNIPRESENCE. The fact that God is everything and everywhere and always helps us as Christians remain on the path that Christ blazed in His life, and in His resurrection. That’s where this last verse comes in.

Hebrews 9:12 KJV – Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Redemption is something we all pray for when we stray from the true path Christ left for us to follow. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit that we should learn how to embrace. Faith is a journey we all can take individually and collectively as the body of Christ, the Church of God.
