Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our combined written and live Sunday sermon, which is normally broadcast every Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love, sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Jesus Christ in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

-      Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog has asked that we pray for her family after the loss of her mother.

-      Pray for my family as we continue to navigate the days and weeks after the death of my younger sister Emilie. Pray for her two sons as they learn how to cope to the best of their abilities. Pray for my mother and for my siblings who are picking up the pieces there in Arizona. Pray for my mother and for the very full household she is part of now with seven people there right now.

-      We pray for JB who has been quite sick for the past week or more. We continue to pray for her mother who is still suffering from the issues after a stroke and other health issues over the past year or more.

-      We pray for EB who has still had no progress relative to his health and everyone and everything is basically at a standstill in that regard.

-      We pray for our friend Alexis Marsh who is still in need for a place to go and a way to sell her belongings to get there if need be.

-      We continue our prayers for Evangelist Cal Jennings, that his health becomes steadier than it has been for far too long. We pray that his medical needs are fully met, and he has all that he requires for comfort and peace. He’s been having a lot of issues with his hearing and with his pain levels.

-      We continue with our prayers for my niece Autumn, who has been suffering seizures due to a head injury from a car crash.

-      We pray for the various outreach ministries we have joined with, with their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Pastor Amir Aneel, Sister Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, and others in Kissee, Nairobi, and other places in Kenya, Pakistan, and India.

-      We pray also for our American outreach ministries, including Rev. Lisa Tyler on the other side of Georgia from where I am and Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog with her ministry, Way Maker Messianic Jewish and Christian Center – USA as well.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, We thank You for the blessings that You bring us. We thank You for this beautiful day You have made. We thank You for the life that we each live and that You have allowed for us to have. We thank You for healing and hope. We pray for those who have died in this world this year already and for those who are picking up the pieces after tragedy. We pray for those who are sick and for those who are healing. We pray for those who need hope, who are homeless, or otherwise in need. We pray for those who have nowhere to go, that You help provide them a path to travel. We pray all this in Your Holy Name through our Savior Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Opening Song: My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less

Sermon: Today we are beginning chapter six in 1st Corinthians. Arguments, trials, and disagreements of all forms would be what Paul is discussing with the church there at Corinth. This is something that has been addressed throughout Scripture many, many times. Yet, we still fail to see the proverbial writing on the wall. That’s why Paul feels the need to address this situation here. Let’s begin with this opening verse. I have only one definition for you to think about. That is discernment.

The definition is as follows: Discernment is the ability to recognize small details, accurately tell the difference between similar things, and make intelligent judgements by using such observations. It’s a noun form of the verb discern, which means to recognize, distinguish, or make judgments in this way. This is the skill Paul is asking the church at Corinth to develop and share with the members of the church and with the leadership as well. It’s important for our faith and belief in order to ensure that we are following the path that Jesus created for us, and not a tangent that will get us lost.

1 Corinthians 6:1 KJV – Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?

NIV – If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?

Who should we go to when it comes to any form of disagreement? GOD! We need to go to JESUS through the HOLY SPIRIT! Yet, we forget this factor. Our ultimate judge is Jesus. Here is one Old Testament reference from the words of King Solomon.

Proverbs 25:8-10 KJV –Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another: Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.

NIV – do not bring hastily to court, for what will you do in the end if your neighbor puts you to shame? If you take your neighbor to court, do not betray another’s confidence, or the one who hears it may shame you and the charge against you will stand.

Here are three gospel entries, the first two being the words of our Savior Jesus.

Matthew 5:25-26 KJV – Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

NIV – “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Matthew 18:15-17 KJV – Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

NIV – “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

Luke 12:58-59 KJV –When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

NIV –As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”

Here are three other references from the writings of Luke in the Acts of the Apostles, the Hebrew Prophets and James the Just, younger brother of Jesus.

Acts 18:14-15 KJV –And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you: But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.

NIV – Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to them, “If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law—settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.”

Hebrews 10:30 KJV –For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

NIV –For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”

James 4:11-12 KJV –Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

NIV –Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

Now, normally I don’t put two verses together unless they have far too many interactions between each other, or they are incomplete sentences or thoughts. In this case, these two verses are a little of the first and last. There are tons of interactions through Scripture, and the trio of questions connect in a thousand ways as well.

1 Corinthians 6:2-3 KJV – Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

NIV – Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

There are only two Old Testament connections with this from King David and from Daniel.

Psalm 149:5-9 KJV – Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand; To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the Lord.

NIV – Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds. May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands, to inflict vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples, to bind their kings with fetters, their nobles with shackles of iron, to carry out the sentence written against them—this is the glory of all his faithful people. Praise the Lord.

Daniel 7:22 KJV – Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.

NIV – until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.

Paul includes five gospel references from Matthew, Luke, and John the Beloved.

Matthew 12:41-42 – The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

NIV – The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

Matthew 19:28 KJV – And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

NIV – Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Matthew 25:31-32 KJV – When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

NIV – “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

Luke 22:30 KJV – That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

NIV – so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

John 5:22-27 KJV – For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

NIV – Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

Paul includes four other references from Jude, another brother of Jesus and also from John the Beloved’s Revelation.

Jude 1:14-15 KJV – And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

NIV – Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

Revelation 1:6 KJV – And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

NIV – and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

Revelation 3:21 KJV – To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

NIV – To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Revelation 5:10 KJV – And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

NIV – You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”

Paul is pointing out something important that we often forget about in this world. We need to learn how to utilize discernment. It is vital for us to recognize the wolves in the midst of the sheep. It is vital to sight the sharks in the midst of the dolphins and other sea creatures. It is vital to see the enemy in the middle of our friends. We cannot do this if we accept everyone and everything that is said or whatever else in this world. Status quo is wickedness exemplified. That’s what our problem is in this world. It can be scary, but if we don’t call out the wrongs in our churches, schools, or society as a whole, who are we to judge and then who shall judge us? Realize this, if we fail to learn to utilize this holy skill we will be left on the wrong side of Heaven’s gates, and my Brothers and Sisters, that is the last place we want to be.

1 Corinthians 6:4 KJV – If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.

NIV – Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church?

Who do you want to judge your actions? Do you want the thug that beats up any and every person that gets into their territory? Do you want the one cowering in the corner hiding? Do you want the richest person you know or the poorest? Or do you want someone who pays attention to what is going on around them, who uses their hearts, minds, spirit, and souls in life and their means justly and conscientiously, around you? Personally, that’s who I want to see me because they’ll call me out on my weaknesses and failings, and they’ll hold me up and help me out when I fall. This is what Paul wants people there at the church in Corinth to recognize.

Exodus 18:21-22 KJV – Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

NIV – But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.

Leviticus 19:15 KJV – Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.

NIV – “‘Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.

Deuteronomy 1:16-17 KJV – And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

NIV – And I charged your judges at that time, “Hear the disputes between your people and judge fairly, whether the case is between two Israelites or between an Israelite and a foreigner residing among you. Do not show partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too hard for you, and I will hear it.”

Proverbs 18:17 KJV – He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.

NIV – In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right, until someone comes forward and cross-examines.

Acts 6:1-4 KJV – And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

NIV – In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

Paul mentions one of the seven troubles this time, shame. He wants them to look deep within themselves there at the church. He wants them to learn how to discern, which is not an easy thing. This is what Paul asks of the church.

1 Corinthians 6:5 KJV – I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?

NIV – I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?

Again, Paul is calling them out. He’s pointing toward their sin. Shame is a trouble, but it is also a result of sin, and it plagues us every single day. Paul notes four passages from the words of King Solomon in the Old Testament to discern more for us to understand.

Proverbs 1:5 KJV – A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

NIV – let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—

Proverbs 2:6 KJV – For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

NIV – For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 3:21 KJV – My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:

NIV – My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion;

Proverbs 8:14 KJV – Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

NIV – Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight, I have power.

Remember, Solomon himself asked God for the ability to utilize discernment and wise judgment. This is an important skill that we can all learn, and that’s exactly what Paul wants us to do. Don’t judge in the moment. Judge with a discerning eye. Remember, Jesus Himself spoke about judging out of turn. Paul adds two passages from the gospels in Matthew and Luke and one passage from the writings of James the Just, human brother of Jesus.

Matthew 7:1-5 KJV – Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

NIV – “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Luke 12:57 KJV – Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

NIV – “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?

James 3:13 KJV – Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

NIV – Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

Judgment is not easy. We tend to rush towards it in place of taking our time to look at all the angles. This is why we convict without just cause. This is why we have a separate body to issue judgements over and beyond the church. That’s one of our biggest issues in this world today. We listen to our governments more than we listen to God and Jesus through the Holy Spirit. That’s our human failure on full display. Our final verse today is this one from Paul, and it is yet another warning as to who we should be going to when we have family issues, or church issues. This is a challenge when we have so many issues in families in this world even to this very day.

1 Corinthians 6:6 KJV – But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers.

NIV – But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!

Our biggest failure is that we forget that Jesus hates the fact that He will be judge because we cannot follow His statutes. They are simple. LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS HE LOVES US and LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS AS OURSELVES and LOVE OUR ENEMIES AS OUR FRIENDS. He didn’t say it would be easy, because it isn’t and has never been such. He also said we need to forgive anyone and everyone. It’s not easy, but it is the way Jesus said we are to be. For more references, Paul again turns to the words of King Solomon here.

Proverbs 6:16-19 KJV – These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

NIV – There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Proverbs 17:14 KJV – The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

NIV – Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

Proverbs 18:19 KJV – A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.

NIV – A brother wronged is more unyielding than a fortified city; disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel.

Proverbs 20:3 KJV –  It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

NIV – It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.

Paul’s final reference is again from James the Just, the younger human brother of Jesus.

James 4:1-2 KJV – From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

NIV – What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.

We have a lot to learn when it comes to judgment, specifically righteous judgment. Many of us are in the same lane as the church at Corinth was when Paul wrote this letter. We need to practice at discernment. We need to practice learning the true meaning of Scripture. We need to have a practical application of Scripture into our daily lives, not just on Sunday, every day. It is important to remember the reason for our being here. His name is Jesus Christ, who comes from the great Jehovah God our Heavenly Father. It is through the life death, and eternal legacy of Jesus Christ that we are here today. Now, let’s show each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now, that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us.

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
