Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.
- My son-in-law Douglas has brought a colleague’s wife into prayer. She went in for surgery and something bad happened in the midst of her recovery that caused her to have more work required. Pray that she heals well after her second surgery on the thirteenth.
- We continue to pray for my brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sam and Allison, who were in a car wreck several weeks ago. They continue in recovery but are not completely healed. Please keep them up in prayer. They thank everyone for their prayers.
- We continue to pray for friends of ours in our bowling league, after they suffered devastating injuries, some of which required surgery and will require a long recovery time as well. They too appreciate the prayers and thank everyone who has lifted them up.
- Evangelist Cal Jennings is currently in rehabilitation after losing his fingertips to serious third-degree burns. Please pray for his healing and that his pain is treated like it should be treated, not as an afterthought.
- David Doyle, brother-in-law of Evangelist Cal Jennings, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. David is a preacher of the Word as well, and this is a new challenge for him and Cal’s sister and their family to experience this close to Christmas. Please keep all of them in prayer during this journey.
- We continue to pray for JB & EB’s neighbor Jerry who is healing after completing his prostate cancer treatment.
- We keep JB’s sister Debbie back into prayer as she has now been diagnosed with Lymphoma after conquering two rounds of breast cancer. From the last report, she is doing well with treatment, so keep praying that this is the final cancer challenge she faces here.
- We continue to pray for my sister-in-law Fran who is still fighting cancer. She has been scheduled for a special scan to see if the cancer is gone. Please pray for this cancer to be gone forever.
- We continue our prayers for JB and EB as they are continually frustrated with all their medical issues that are ignored or overlooked. JB has been especially sick, losing weight way too fast and no complete solution in sight at the moment. She has gotten a tentative diagnosis for what is going on with her, but her doctor has scheduled her with a specialist to verify. JB has been seriously ill this past month with several issues going on that have sent her system completely out of whack.
- We continue to pray for a friend of ours, Alexis, who is in desperate need to improve her current situation and is seeking to sell things she owns to help her with this. If you want more information, send me a private message and I’ll pass on the information.
- We continue to pray for my Mama who has had a lot of anxiety issues lately after the loss of my sister four months ago. These anxiety issues are really devastating for her and for the family, so please keep all of them in prayer.
- We continue to pray for all sufferers and survivors of the various types of cancer, including several survivors of the disease, JB’s sister Debbie, our friend Alexis, my Aunt Donna, and my friend Kelly.
- We pray for those who are in the path of dangerous weather, and other dangerous conditions, including wildfires, storms, flooding, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, worldwide.
- We pray for the various outreach ministries we have joined with, with their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Pastor Amir Aneel, Sister Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, and others in Kissee, Nairobi, and other places in Kenya, Pakistan, and India.
- We pray also for our American outreach ministries, including Rev. Lisa Tyler on the other side of Georgia from where I am and Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog with her ministry, Way Maker Messianic Jewish and Christian Center – USA as well.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we have so much and so many to pray for. We pray for the many who are injured and ill in our ministry, our friends, family, and more. We pray for the homeless and the helpless around this world. We pray for the victims of violence, prejudice, and terrorism in this world. We pray for the unjustly persecuted and prosecuted. We pray for the friends and family who have been fighting cancer including Fran, David, and Debbie. We pray for those who survived cancer, including Kelly, Alexis and many more, that they continue to remain well. We pray for the nations at war. We pray for all this in Your Holy Name through our Savior Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.
Opening Song: Just As I Am
Sermon: Today we are continuing the eleventh chapter of 1 Corinthians. Now, this week, we’ve got an interesting situation in the first half of the sermon. This would be something that doesn’t get talked about much. That’s the length of a man’s hair as opposed to a woman. Now, let me tell you, I know and have known a lot of men with long hair. The Apostle Paul was not one of them. Jesus was not one of them. In point of fact, their hair was less than shoulder length the entirety of their lives based on where they were raised. I’ve known men with hair as long as their waist and as short as what is known as a buzz cut and everything in between. I’ve known women the same. In fact, I know and have known women with hair all the way to their feet. My paternal grandmother was one of them. My own hair flows to just past my waist, but until after I got married, it never went longer than my shoulders. With that, let’s begin where we left off last week.
1 Corinthians 11:14 KJV –Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
NIV –Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
All of Paul’s references for this verse consist of Old Testament viewpoints, including the Torah and the Poetic Scrolls. Here are those references.
Genesis 1:27 KJV – So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
NIV – So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Genesis 2:18-24 KJV – And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
NIV – The
Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper
suitable for him.”
19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild
animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he
would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its
name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds
in the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the
Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping,
he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then
the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man,
and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my
flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united
to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Numbers 6:5 KJV – All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.
NIV – “‘During the entire period of their Nazirite vow, no razor may be used on their head. They must be holy until the period of their dedication to the Lord is over; they must let their hair grow long.
Deuteronomy 22:5 KJV – The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.
NIV – A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.
Judges 16:17 KJV – That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
NIV – So he told her everything. “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”
Job 12:7-10 KJV – But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.9 Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this?10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
NIV – “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; 8 or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. 9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? 10 In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.
Psalm 19:1-4 KJV – The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
NIV – The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. 4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
Proverbs 6:6-8 KJV – Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: 7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, 8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
NIV – Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
Paul continues his descriptive letter with how women’s hair should be viewed. Now, again, he doesn’t specify length, just long. That can be viewed differently in every woman, because no man’s hair is the same length as another and no woman’s would be either. And yes, there are bald men and women too, which are an anomaly that does not follow this directive that Paul brings. Baldness is not a curse, Brothers and Sisters. It is just a situation that cannot be changed by nature of our DNA on occasion. Man wouldn’t create hats, scarves, turbans, or any of those items if there weren’t those who wish to hide that feature on them. Baldness is not something to be ashamed of. In point of fact, cancer patients should wear this as a badge of honor upon surviving the evil of the disease. Did you know that some cancer patients never regain their hair? This is no different than those who suffer alopecia or other conditions that cause us to be hairless. This should never be considered shameful or embarrassing, ever. Now Paul has this to say about a woman’s hair.
1 Corinthians 11:15 KJV –But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
NIV –but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
Paul shares two Old Testament views in the Poetic Scrolls and five in the New Testament.
Proverbs 16:31 KJV – The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.
NIV – Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness.
Song of Songs (Solomon) 7:5 KJV – Thine head upon thee is like Carmel, and the hair of thine head like purple; the king is held in the galleries.
NIV – Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel. Your hair is like royal tapestry; the king is held captive by its tresses.
Paul shares two gospel verses describing the same Word from our Savior Yeshua Ha Notzri Jesus Christ seen in the writings of Matthew and Luke.
Matthew 10:30 KJV – But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
NIV – And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Luke 12:7 KJV – But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
NIV – Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Paul adds three viewpoints from his first letter to Timothy, the brother of Jesus, James the Just and also from fellow Apostle Peter.
1 Timothy 2:9-10 KJV –In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; 10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
NIV – I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
James 1:17 KJV – Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
NIV – Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
1 Peter 3:3-4 KJV –Whose adorning let it not
be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of
putting on of apparel;
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is
not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the
sight of God of great price.
NIV – Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
Paul wanted to stop arguments in their tracks. He was quite good at it if this next line is any indication with his first letter to Corinth.
1 Corinthians 11:16 KJV –But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
NIV –If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.
Paul has only four New Testament references for this one.
Acts 21:21-24 KJV – And
they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the
Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their
children, neither to walk after the customs.
22 What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come
together: for they will hear that thou art come.
23 Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men
which have a vow on them;
24 Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges
with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things,
whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself
also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.
NIV –They have been informed that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. 22 What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come, 23 so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. 24 Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law.
1 Timothy 6:4-5 KJV –He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
NIV –they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
2 Timothy 2:23-24 KJV – But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
NIV – Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.
Titus 3:9 KJV – But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
NIV – But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.
Now, the second half of this sermon concerns the Lord’s Supper. Now there is the right way to celebrate the Lord’s Supper, and the wrong way. This is what Paul is addressing with the church congregation and leadership there at Corinth. Now, this is very important, even today, because there are those who do not truly appreciate the importance of the celebration of communion, which is the modern name for the Lord’s Supper as shared in Scripture.
1 Corinthians 11:17 KJV –Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.
NIV –In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good.
Paul includes only New Testament viewpoints again with the writings of Luke in the Acts of the Apostles, the Hebrew Prophets, James the Just, younger brother of Jesus, and John the Beloved’s Revelation.
Acts 20:7 KJV – And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
NIV – On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight.
Hebrews 10:25 KJV – Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
NIV – not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
James 2:2 KJV – For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
NIV – Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in.
Revelation 2:4 KJV – Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
NIV – Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.
Revelation 3:1 KJV – And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
NIV – “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
Revelation 3:15-16 KJV – I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
NIV – I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Now, Paul addresses something I’ve seen in churches throughout my entire lifetime. I see it here in the USA, and everywhere in this world portrayed on the internet, in photos and more. It’s a sad, sorry situation that continues despite the warnings Jesus had, the warnings His siblings, Apostles, and Disciples added to. That is separation of classes, genders, ages, and so forth. This SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. Everyone who wants to learn the Word should be able to learn it equally with the person next to them, regardless of the clothes they wear, the earnings they bring or don’t bring, their age, height, weight, or the color of their skin. This is how Paul addresses the situation.
1 Corinthians 11:18 KJV –For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
NIV –In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.
Paul has four references from the New Testament.
Acts 2:42 KJV – And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
NIV – They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Titus 3:10 KJV – A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
NIV – Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them.
James 3:16 KJV – For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
NIV –For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
2 Peter 1:20 KJV –Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
NIV –Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.
Now this is our last verse today, and it addresses something known as HERESY. What is it? Why is it so bad? Heresy, according to the Roman Catholic Church is the willful and persistent rejection of any article of faith by a baptized member of the church. In other words, HERESY is a direct path to hellfire and brimstone eternal death and we should beware. Here are Paul’s words of warning.
1 Corinthians 11:19 KJV –For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
NIV –No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.
Again, Paul has only New Testament references, one from Yeshua Ha Notzri Jesus Christ of Nazareth and the rest from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter, John the Beloved, and Jude, the younger brother of Yeshua Ha Notzri.
Matthew 18:7 KJV – Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
NIV – Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!
Acts 20:30 KJV – Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
NIV –Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.
1 Peter 1:7 KJV –That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
NIV –These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
2 Peter 2:1 KJV –But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
NIV –But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.
1 John 2:19 KJV –They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
NIV – They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
Jude 1:19 KJV – These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.
NIV – These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.
There are many things we need to be aware of as we worship in a church of any kind, whether it has a building or is designed like this one at Covenant of Hope Ministries. We have to be aware that we cannot afford to divide ourselves in any way. We are ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS THROUGH CHRIST’S SALVATION. We hear it in the words that Yeshua Ha Notzri Jesus Christ spoke. We read it in the letters written by Paul, Peter, James, Jude, and John the Beloved. We see it in the Word as shared through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John the Beloved. We recognize it in the writings of the Hebrew Prophets. We know it in the literal design of Scripture and how it is shared. Each and every one of us has a mission to continue the lessons that God has insisted we share with each other. We need to work together to bring His unconditional love to the masses around us. We do that by showing each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
