Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our combined written and live Sunday sermon, which is normally broadcast every Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love, sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Yeshu Ha-Notzri or in English Jesus Christ of Nazareth in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.
- We continue to pray for my brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sam and Allison, who were in a car wreck several weeks ago. They continue in recovery but are not completely healed. Please keep them up in prayer. They thank everyone for their prayers.
- We continue to pray for friends of ours in our bowling league, after they suffered devastating injuries, some of which required surgery and will require a long recovery time as well. They too appreciate the prayers and thank everyone who has lifted them up.
- Evangelist Cal Jennings is currently in rehabilitation after losing his fingertips to serious third-degree burns. Please pray for his healing and that his pain is treated like it should be treated, not as an afterthought.
- David Doyle, brother-in-law of Evangelist Cal Jennings, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. David is a preacher of the Word as well, and this is a new challenge for him and Cal’s sister and their family to experience this close to Christmas. Please keep all of them in prayer during this journey.
- We continue to pray for JB & EB’s neighbor Jerry who is healing after completing his prostate cancer treatment.
- We keep JB’s sister Debbie back into prayer as she has now been diagnosed with Lymphoma after conquering two rounds of breast cancer. From the last report, she is doing well with treatment, so keep praying that this is the final cancer challenge she faces here.
- We continue to pray for my sister-in-law Fran who is still fighting cancer. She is undergoing a full body scan this week to ensure that her cancer is gone.
- We continue our prayers for JB and EB as they are continually frustrated with all their medical issues that are ignored or overlooked. JB has been especially sick, losing weight way too fast and no complete solution in sight at the moment. She has gotten a tentative diagnosis for what is going on with her, but her doctor has scheduled her with a specialist to verify. JB has been seriously ill this past three weeks with a serious viral infection on top of everything else.
- We continue to pray for a friend of ours, Alexis, who is in desperate need to improve her current situation and is seeking to sell things she owns to help her with this. If you want more information, send me a private message and I’ll pass on the information.
- We continue to pray for my Mama who has had a lot of anxiety issues lately after the loss of my sister four months ago. These anxiety issues are really devastating for her and for the family, so please keep all of them in prayer.
- We continue to pray for all sufferers and survivors of the various types of cancer, including several survivors of the disease, JB’s sister Debbie, our friend Alexis, my Aunt Donna, and my friend Kelly.
- We pray for those who are in the path of dangerous weather, and other dangerous conditions, including wildfires, storms, flooding, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, worldwide.
- We pray for the various outreach ministries we have joined with, with their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Pastor Amir Aneel, Sister Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, and others in Kissee, Nairobi, and other places in Kenya, Pakistan, and India.
- We pray also for our American outreach ministries, including Rev. Lisa Tyler on the other side of Georgia from where I am and Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog with her ministry, Way Maker Messianic Jewish and Christian Center – USA as well.
* Birthday announcement for my daughter Deanna who will celebrate on the 13th and for my daughter-in-law Rebecca who will celebrate on the 16th.
* Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers here on this earth!
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we have so much and so many to pray for. We pray for the mothers in our ministry, past and present. We pray for the many who are injured and ill in our ministry, our friends, family, and more. We pray for the homeless and the helpless around this world. We pray for the unjustly persecuted and prosecuted. We pray for the friends and family who have been fighting cancer including Fran, David, and Debbie. We pray for those who survived cancer, including Kelly, Alexis and many more, that they continue to remain well. We pray for the nations at war. We pray for all this in Your Holy Name through our Savior Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.
Opening Song: Amazing Grace
Sermon: Today we are continuing the eleventh chapter of 1st Corinthians. Now, this section, like the first section last week, continues with the role of women. With it being Mother’s Day here in the USA, I didn’t feel the need to separate the segments because, we, as mothers, must bring our children up in the way God wishes us to manage, male and female, not as society wishes, only as God does. That’s a challenge in this world today, and it wasn’t much different in the Scriptures. Now, today there are not nearly as many references for each verse, which means that we have more verses from this chapter than we normally would in a single sermon. Let’s begin where we left off last week.
1 Corinthians 11:6 KJV –For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
NIV –For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.
Our hair is just as important as the rest of our bodies, male and female. How we dress, how we groom ourselves, how we care for ourselves, those are all important to God. Yes, it is important to portray ourselves as godly people. In order to do that, we should wear appropriate clothes, dress our hair accordingly, and yes, pray always. However, Paul shares more in this series of verses that actually pertains quite a lot to today’s world, even if it was written almost two millennia ago. Here are his references, these all from the Old Testament.
Genesis 24:65 KJV – For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.
NIV – For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.
Ruth 3:15 KJV – Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.
NIV – He also said, “Bring me the shawl you are wearing and hold it out.” When she did so, he poured into it six measures of barley and placed the bundle on her. Then he went back to town.
Isaiah 3:24 KJV – And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
NIV
–Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope;
instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing,
sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.
Now, men are treated differently in Scripture because of the order in which mankind was created. Man was created first, this is true, and yes, animals and plants, and trees, and birds and insects were all created before woman, but none of those mattered to man as much as woman. That is significant, even to God. Here is what Paul shares about that.
1 Corinthians 11:7 KJV – For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
NIV – A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
Now, in this world, it is not an easy thing to discern that women are the glory of men. In many countries, women are second, not equal. Yet, God created us as equals, to work together as one. This is why when we marry, we are supposed to be “one flesh”, “one body”, “one spirit”, “one soul”. That’s not easy to manage. Being one in everything is a challenge that we must work to maintain. None of us is perfect as humans. That’s why we need God through Yeshua Ha Notzri Jesus Christ in the first place. That’s why Paul utilizes these next Old and New Testament references.
Exodus 34:33-35 KJV – And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face. 34 But when Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
NIV – When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord.
Proverbs 12:4 KJV – A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
NIV – A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.
James 3:9 KJV – Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
NIV – With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.
Again, Paul points out that man was created first, not woman. In the days of Corinth, early in the Christian Church, there were times in certain parts of society that treated women as the opposite, and Greece was one of those areas that did so in some ways. This regardless that there were as many masculine gods as there were feminine in their culture, still, exchanging a singular God with a pantheon of deities takes time, practice, and patience to resolve. This is what Paul was battling against when teaching the church at Corinth.
1 Corinthians 11:8 KJV –For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
NIV –For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;
Paul shares two Old and two New Testament references this time. The first two are from Genesis in the Torah and the last two are from the gospel of Matthew and Paul’s letter to Ephesus.
Genesis 2:7 KJV – And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
NIV – Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Genesis 2:21-23 KJV – And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
NIV – So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”
Matthew 19:4-6 KJV – And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
NIV – “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Ephesians 5:31 KJV – For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
NIV –“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
Again, Paul reiterates that man was created first, not just for woman. Woman was created solely for man. In society, this can be a challenging ideology. We see it every single day, and, in the past, present, and even in the future this will continue to be a challenge to humanity. There are so many corrupting methodologies around this world that we often fail to literally see the eternal and infinite writing in our own DNA.
1 Corinthians 11:9 KJV –Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
NIV –neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
Here are three Scriptural references for this, two from the Torah and one from Peter’s first letter.
Genesis 1:27 KJV – So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
NIV – So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Genesis 2:24 KJV – Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
NIV –That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
1 Peter 3:1-6 KJV –Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
NIV –Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
What is beauty? What is powerful when it comes to a woman? What is godly, eternal, and infinite unconditional love when it is expressed by a woman? These are great questions for Mother’s Day. There are proverbs and sayings like these: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. “Love is infinite, eternal, and gloriously blind”. “A Mother’s love is eternally held in our hearts, minds, spirits, and very souls.” This is what Paul shares next regarding women.
1 Corinthians 11:10 KJV –For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
NIV – It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels.
A woman’s love is powerful. Her very existence is powerful. She has autonomy over her heart, mind, body, and spirit, even though she is a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, or great grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin, or friend. God gave woman to man, but that doesn’t mean that woman cannot think for herself, work by herself, do things on her own, but once a woman marries, then that woman has a partner throughout everything she does, is, and will ever be. This is what God wants us to see. Again, we see a repetition of the Torah in Paul’s references.
Genesis 2:18-20 KJV – And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. 19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
NIV – The Lord God said, “It is not good for
the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild
animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he
would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its
name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds
in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper
was found.
Paul adds three New Testament references from the letter he wrote to Titus, the writings of the Hebrew Prophets and also John the Beloved’s Revelation.
Titus 2:4-5 KJV – That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
NIV – Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
Hebrews 12:22-24 KJV – But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
NIV – But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
Revelation 5:11-12 KJV – And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; 12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
NIV –Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”
Again, Paul reiterates that man and woman are connected to each other eternally through God. That’s a challenge in this world today. It wasn’t much better in Paul’s time. There is a lot to realize and recognize in the connection between man and woman. We are each a part of one another, Brothers AND Sisters, Fathers AND Mothers, Sons AND Daughters, Adults AND Children, ALL OF US TOGETHER IN CHRIST. Here is what Paul says next.
1 Corinthians 11:11 KJV –Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
NIV – Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
Here are five references Paul makes, only two in the Old Testament and the rest from his letters to Galatia, Ephesus and Colossae.
Genesis 5:2 KJV – Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
NIV – He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created.
Job 14:1 KJV – Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.
NIV – “Mortals, born of woman, are of few days and full of trouble.
Galatians 3:28 KJV – There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
NIV – There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 4:5-6 KJV – One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
NIV – one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Colossians 3:11 KJV – Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
NIV –Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
Now Paul adds something interesting to the mix. He points out that man and woman are connected in ways even we often don’t recognize or realize. Let’s see what he shares next.
1 Corinthians 11:12 KJV –For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
NIV – For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
God created everything and everyone for a reason, and yes, that includes good and evil, wicked and just. These are the Old Testament references Paul shares in the writings of King Solomon and Isaiah.
Proverbs 16:4 KJV – The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
NIV – The Lord works out everything to its proper end—even the wicked for a day of disaster.
Isaiah 43:7 KJV – Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
NIV – everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
Paul adds references to the writings of John the Beloved, the gospel writer Luke in the Acts of the Apostles and also in his letter to Galatia.
John 1:3 KJV – All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
NIV – Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
Acts 17:25 KJV – Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
NIV – And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.
Galatians 4:4 KJV – But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
NIV –But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
Our final verse from the first letter Paul wrote to Corinth is this one. This one speaks of judgment, not final judgment, but personal judgment. Every person has the ability to judge with careful thought and precision. Don’t rush to judge, don’t do it sloppily, do it with reserve, with careful examination, and with patience, persistence, and prudence as well.
1 Corinthians 11:13 KJV –Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
NIV –Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
Paul has one Old Testament reference and it’s a very good one.
1 Samuel 1:10-13 KJV –And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore. 11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli marked her mouth.13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
NIV – In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the
Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow, saying, “Lord
Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and
not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord
for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”
12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah
was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard.
Eli thought she was drunk
Paul adds two references in the Word as shared by Yeshua Ha Notzri Jesus Christ in the gospels of Luke and John the Beloved as well as a final view from the writings of Luke in the Acts of the Apostles.
Luke 12:57 KJV – Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?
NIV – “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?
John 7:24 KJV – Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
NIV – Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
Acts 4:19 KJV – But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
NIV – But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!
Women have a mission in life. It is to take care of the men of this world. It is to take care of the children we bring into this world. It is to take care of each other, our sisters, our mothers, and our friends. On this Mother’s Day, let’s try to remember that. We all have a mission in life. Paul proved that with his entire life. All the Apostles did. We see it in every letter they wrote. We hear it in the words that Yeshua Ha Notzri Jesus Christ spoke. We know it in the literal design of Scripture and how it is shared. Each and every one of us has a mission to continue the lessons that God has insisted we share with each other. We need to work together to bring His unconditional love to the masses around us. We do that by showing each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now, that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us.
Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
