Believe, Be Aware and Beware, the True Path to Eternal Life Awaits

Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our sermon or midweek study. You will normally see us posted on Sunday and Wednesday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love. It doesn’t conform to society’s wishes. This ministry shares the Word of God, the Spirit of Christ Jesus. Those who know me well will recognize that there are definitive differences in the creation of every sermon from this point forward. It is God’s will that has brought this to be. We wish only that God’s truth will be shared within His words as brought to us by the Spirit as it fills my heart, mind, and soul to be shared with my hands, but with His words alone.

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

- Please add some extra prayers for Elder Cal Jennings who has been suffering greatly with his health. He has let me know that he is very, very ill with Bronchitis bordering on Pneumonia at this point in time. His pain is constant and little to nothing helps. May the Lord bring his spirits up and help heal him and ease his pain.

- Please pray for job opportunities or offers to help bless Sister Theresa Bogard.

- Please pray for a dear friend and colleague who has just learned they might have very serious problems. She has had so many issues that this week the doctor has insisted on special tests to determine what is going on. Help me help this friend of mine with the strength of compassion and more.

- Be thankful for each day we live as we do not know what tomorrow brings.

- Pray for our nations that the voice of God be heard through the Spirit.

- Pray for our friends and families that their tomorrows bring blessings and pray our own be the same.

- Pray for those suffering as a result of the terrors that have occurred just this past week around this world.

- Pray for our sick and wounded that they may heal.

Prayer: Father in heaven, this is our prayer today for seriously needed relief of those in far-away places suffering from forest and brush fires in Australia, those suffering the aftereffects of armed gunmen, bombings, and so forth, that their spirits be lifted and calmed. We pray for those who suffered through the earthquakes in Puerto Rico last week as well. We pray for those who have been suffering illness or pain, that they will be given comfort and healing. We pray for blessings in the midst of pain, sorrow, terror, and more, so that this year is a better one for all around us. For each of these we pray in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: Today we are looking into a series of verses Elder Cal Jennings posted on Facebook the other day. These five verses made me think beyond my normal meditation with the Word this week. It wouldn’t be the first time I had been absorbed by something the Holy Spirit inspired. I know all too well, when the Spirit tells me to stop just a minute, then I have no choice but to do so. The future is something many have worried about. We see and hear this phenomenon in every genre, every method of expression, and yet, Scripture tells us not to worry about the future. We will start here.

Matthew 7:15-20 KJV – Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

It is the quietest of warnings, with the largest amount of impact. You see this not just in the Gospel of Matthew, but in nearly all of the Gospels. I will bring similar warning from Jesus through the Gospel of John. This one is a familiar one to nearly all who have known how God and the Holy Spirit have filled me with inspiration.

John 15:1-13 KJV – I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

The point in both of these views of our Savior teaching what should be as opposed to what we often see in this world is simple. Listen to the Spirit that dwells within you, and surrounds you as well. Listen to God and understand, His teachings are important for each and every person who wishes to learn the true impact of listening to Him no matter how many temptations exist.

Pay attention to these two verses from Matthew and John.

Matthew 7:19 KJV – Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

John 15:6 KJV – If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

Believing is only the beginning. Sharing your belief, living with that belief in everything you do, would be just as important as believing. There are a lot of things people do that would actually be the opposite of what they should be, even if they are devout Christians and sharing in that thought with the others around them. I have, over the past decade and more, seen both, total devotion to Him in words, thoughts, and actions, and some of those haphazard methods where sometimes it looks like the exact opposite is happening. It is the false teachers that work to chip away at the armor of God’s love in people around this world. No one is immune to the evil things that there would be all around us. Some spend too much time doing one thing and perfecting that, rather than truly exploring what faith and love of God can do. We have been studying 1 Corinthians 15, which shows us how the Apostle Paul shared exactly what Jesus was speaking about, in a completely different view, from an Apostle who has had no choice but to become a teacher in His stead. All the Apostles did just that. Peter, John, and all the rest did their very best to keep the true believers, old and new, engaged in the thought that every believer is part of that vineyard, part of that Tree of Life our Lord and Savior would truly be.

1 Corinthians 15:52-52 KJV – In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Note how Paul is sharing the exact same message. Being part of God through Christ takes work. It takes a great deal of practice, thought, and a reminder to pay attention to what we think, say, and do in this life here where everything can be corrupted by evil in every possible form. We have to think beyond the flesh of humanity, beyond the desires of this earth. Doing so is the only way to ensure that we stay on that path by which Christ taught us to walk, to live, to share, and to delight in the journey. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)

Opening Song: If Today Was Your Last Day ~ Nickelback https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrXIQQ8PeRs

Sermon: The idea of baptism is one that has been spoken about since the days of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. What is important about baptism? It is a cleansing, not just a bath to scrub the dirt and grime of the day, but cleansing from sin, and an ability to have a fresh start and to become a truly faithful and devout follower of Christ and God, our Heavenly Father. The gift of baptism is furthered through the learning of the Word, the practice of that Word, and the sharing of His Holy Word with those around us. Baptism, Communion, Confirmation, three words we hear a lot, not just in Scripture, but in the various churches around the world.

1 Corinthians 15:29-30 KJV – Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead? And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?

If it had not been for the coming of Christ, and all that He did for us, Baptism, Confirmation, Communion, none of those would hold an ounce of meaning. Jesus gave tradition meaning, substance. That’s why He was first promised, then borne, lived, died, rose from death to eternal life, and then proven to be just that. Jesus gives our faith substance that you can see, feel, think about, and understand, just to be able to share that same gift with anyone that surrounds us, no matter their age.
Romans 6:3-4 KJV –  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

When Paul wrote this, he was teaching new Christians, those who had never met, never known, Jesus beyond the sermons shared, just how important the teaching would be, not just during the time when Christ was alive and teaching, preaching the Truth of the Word, but also what it means to follow in those much-revered footsteps even with Him in the Spirit as opposed to alive and breathing. The promise of a future walking side by side with Jesus, that is seriously important for us to understand, and to strive toward in this world of chaos today. With all the sad and sorrowful things that we have seen, from the bombings to the arson fires destroying Australia and other locations, as well as the various earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters that have shaken foundations all over this world in the last decade alone. Jesus is part of us, each of us, once we accept Him as our Lord and Savior. That is what was hoped for long before the birth of Christ, as shared here.

Isaiah 25:8 KJV – He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it.

Here we see Isaiah sharing that there would be a day, long after he was gone when everything would transform from eternal death to eternal life. The moment when Jesus would secure our place in heaven, a gift promised by God all the way in the days of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, there would be a time when the bite of a forbidden piece of fruit transformed life to death, peril and perishing in many views and methods. Here we see Paul describing that as well.

2 Corinthians 11:26 KJV – In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;

We all know life isn’t easy. If it were, there would be no fun to be found. It would be boring, and we would wonder, even more, exactly why we are here in the first place. Paul is reassuring the disciples and followers, the newly confirmed Christians, that no matter how hard it gets here on earth, our faith will hold us together, and keep us working toward that destination, the one which promises us a life filled with beauty, peace, and prosperity.

1 Corinthians 15:31 KJV – I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

Even Jesus warned that it would not be easy to follow His footsteps. Paul is here in Corinth proving that it is no walk in the park to be a follower of Jesus, especially when you consider that Jesus was crucified, a brutal end for this Man who had not sinned and did not deserve the death He received. Even in the midst of His sorrow, His pain, He thought only of those who needed Him, for so many reasons that even some of us may never realize. We see a similar lesson in the city of Philippi. Paul was adamant that people understand, it isn’t just an act, it is a serious endeavor that requires strength in every way, spiritually, physically, mentally, to follow His footsteps, and share that voyage with as many as are willing to listen.

Philippians 3:3 KJV – For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

There is a reason we still have to preach and teach the lessons of Jesus. That would be eternal life because the other route would be filled with death, despair, and destruction. A lot of people have asked me over the years, what I was thinking when I started my voyage following Christ, making up my own mind to do so. It was not an easy consideration for me, to take the step to become a minister. I spent a good twenty years fighting to realize exactly what life wanted from me, as well as what I wanted out of life. I have my family, my children, my grandchild, my wonderfully devoted husband, and so many more. Yet, when I was eighteen, nineteen, I wasn’t sure where God was leading me. I was frustrated, unfulfilled in the things I was hoping to manage. So, I walked away. I studied on my own, spent a great deal of time alone just because I was lost, spiritually at least.

The writings of Paul and John always make me think about what it took to get me out of that frustrating stupor in my life. And then I met the man I married, and one of the most spiritual people I have ever experienced in my entire life, even beyond my paternal grandmother, a Christian minister, just like I would be at this point in my life. Who was this person? Her name was Martha Neff, and I called her Moms. She, even to her dying day, believed so strongly in God’s strength, in the power of Jesus, that she had me realizing and recognizing what she saw in me from the very first moment we met. She had touched death more than once, and suffered so much in her life, filled with constant pain, I realized she bore that pain and survived it, until such time as God told her it was time to leave us except in spirit. As most of this ministry’s members know, she was not the first I lost in the pursuit of my faith, and she was not, nor will she be, the last. It was Martha Neff who proved to me that life would be eternally managed, through the power of God and the gift of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. Paul shared his view of that eternity here.

Romans 6:23 KJV – For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

God’s law, note this, Jesus said there is a difference between following tradition and following God. It is a tradition in this world today to walk into a church building, sit down, and participate in the typical Sunday ritual we know so well. Jesus, however, taught that there is so much more to ministry than tradition. It goes beyond the space where a sermon is delivered. It goes beyond the sharing of communion, song, prayers and praises. Some people don’t realize just how much work comes with being truly Christian. You can’t just go by rote, repetition. You have to absorb the Word, with hearing, reading, repeating, sharing, and so forth. You have to do this to truly live a Christian life in full. It’s more than rules and laws. It’s more than showing up. That’s what Paul shares here.

Romans 4:15 KJV – Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

There is a song that says, “If today was your last day…” and I’ve mentioned it before. Another one says, “If everyone cared…”, and I have also noted that one. Both songs share so much, and we often won’t see how truthful and spiritual some music can be, due to how it is conveyed. How much of a difference would caring, or kindness, have on this world today? No, I’m not speaking of caring and then boasting that you’ve done this, or managed a bit of kindness to someone that would hardly expect it. It’s more than that. Sharing kindness, and caring, is taking Scripture and transforming their life with it, without saying a word. Caring enough to do more than just the normal with someone or for someone shares far more than people realize. Yet, even with all the care in the world, there are those who would rather we Christians did not exist. To protect the innocent is something we often want to do more of. This is what Paul shares regarding that much.

Romans 8:36 KJV – As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

True followers, devout followers, of Christ would understand what it means to sacrifice much of our lives to ensure that others understood what Christ, what God means to each of those and how much it affects each of them when it comes to teaching, learning, understanding, sharing, and caring about the Word, the Truth of God’s Word. Every person has their own path with Christ, it is as individual as it is for everyone to follow together as one.  It’s something that can be easily understood, as long as we listen to our hearts, our minds, our spirits, and our souls.

Opening Song: People Get Ready ~ Crystal Lewis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REc6uRQRnV0

Sermon: Today I am continuing our study of 1 Corinthians 15 because it is important to explore Scripture that makes us think. The reason for that, would be that we need to spend more time just studying this world we live in, and the beliefs we have, to find the right footsteps to take toward a future that satisfies our spiritual needs as much as our physical, mental, and emotional ones. This applies to all views of relationships in this world, friends, enemies, families, and all the rest. God is our Creator, and sometimes we have to ask Him one question. “Where do I go from here?” Paul shows us one method to do this here, and gives us hope to add to that.

1 Corinthians 15:25-28 KJV – For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

Remember, God created us in His image, and He has high hopes for us. If He didn’t, we would never have had the opportunity to reach heaven at the End of Days. Jesus teaches us every hour of our lives, if we pay attention long enough and if we follow through to follow His guidelines in the first place. Then, as a result, we will be able to destroy the one that brought death to this world, the intimidator, the destructor, the Devil, Satan, the Enemy of all, not just one of us, but all of us. It takes work, practice, to realize the path Jesus and God want each of us to take. That’s why we must study the Word syllable by syllable. Let’s start with connections to these verses bring.

Psalm 8:6 KJV – Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

Ephesians 1:22 KJV – And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

Hebrews 1:13 KJV –  But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

All of these verses refer to the idea of a footstool as what enemies and all that which torments us in the world around us would end up as. It is a huge hope that many who believe in everything Christ promises, in everything God our Father represents, that we each, even with our faults, our sins, will be forgiven and buried beneath the footstool under God’s feet, under Christ’s feet as well. That’s something to look forward to for every single one of us who believe.

1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 KJV – For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

These verses here show that EVERYONE is eligible for forgiveness, for entering the kingdom of Heaven, God’s realm filled with mansions for all of us to forever dwell within. That’s a hope, a promise, a gift, to help us see beyond our daily turmoil, trials, and tribulations. We see still more of this description through the eyes of Hosea.

Hosea 13:14 KJV – I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

This is a foretelling, a foreshadowing of what Jesus Christ would bring to this world, changing everything, bringing light into the darkness that this world suffers from so much now. Salvation is something we hope to see. This is something alluded to in the words of the many Apostles and Disciples of Christ, from the days when He walked this earth in the flesh, and on through today, bringing hope to the many, not just the few, so long as we remember to believe. The end of death as we know it, is coming into this world, promised to us through Christ our Savior in His own words so long ago and reflected on, remembered by, everyone who truly believes. Here is Timothy’s view.

2 Timothy 1:10 KJV – But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

Death is history, never to affect us in the same way again, a promise brought to us through Christ as He gave up the Ghost on the cross at Calvary. Immortality brought to us right then and there. Proven in the last words inspired to be written through John the Beloved. The Scroll of Revelation is one that is often misunderstood, and in some ways feared. John the Beloved wrote these words while suffering exile from the one place he loved to live while here on earth. This exile imposed because John’s love of God’s Word, of Christ, defeated the efforts of the then emperor of Rome.

Revelation 20:14 KJV – And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

In this world today, God’s Word continues to defeat the evil that is found around, and sometimes surrounding us. We have to be aware at all times, just in case we miss the Second Coming. Jesus shared with us that nobody would recognize Him. Much like when He rose from the dead and stood before the Disciples and Apostles three days after dying on the cross. At first look, nobody realized it was Him until He spoke. We will only know it when we are in the midst of it. That’s a warning every Apostle and Minister of God has shared through all of history, even up to this very day. Here we see several of those.

Zechariah 9:14 KJV – And the Lord shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.

2 Peter 3:10 KJV – But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

Matthew 24:31 KJV – And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

John 5:25 KJV – Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

Philippians 3:21 KJV – Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

2 Corinthians 5:4 KJV – For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

These verses may not look like they go together, but truthfully, they share the very same thing. That is the fact that He will walk this earth again, and it won’t be to teach or preach. This time, the End of Days will have begun, and we will learn what part of that we each will play. Everyone, and everything, will be brought to judgment. None of us will know the results of that until it happens. We have to ensure that we learn now, how to be prepared, with an open heart and a studious spirit and soul, we will reach that victory found in Jesus. It takes practice, lots of practice, to truly understand our Father, and His Word and what it means to one and all.
