Covenant of Hope Ministries Sunday Sermon_4_24_2013
Good afternoon, and welcome to this Sunday Sermon for Covenant of Hope Ministries. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff, and the ministry knows me as the Rainbow Minister. You can find us posted on Sundays. These are our locations online only:

We have email and Instant Messenger through Facebook available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday 10AM to 2PM ET US. We’re still working this out between the two of us as to what will happen, our Elder, Cal Jennings and I. I will be informing you further in regard to changes being made. These changes were made due to health reasons. There will be live sermons, and the sermon length will be shortened dramatically, but we are unsure as to when that might be.
Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list has grown from last week. This is our current prayer list for this week.
Continue your prayers for family and friends of Mary Cathryn Michel-Lynch who passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013. Her memorial is posted. I am working to see about everything that’s going on in regard to issues up north where she was at the time of her death. Some of those issues need a lot of prayer.
Little Phoebe Fair is going through her final round of chemotherapy, it will be this week! Pray that she comes through and her cancer goes into remission. Give her family faith and hope.
Pray for our family. There are several things weighing us down. There are family members who continue to need prayer. Claim that God knows and will be there. Pray that an equitable consideration can be had for one of our many financial issues. There has been a solution given, just needs clarification, and it can be complete. In God’s name we claim that it can be done. Your prayers are very much appreciated. Praise the LORD some of those have been solved over this past week.
Pray for Elder Cal, as he has still been feeling pretty rotten. He also has had some technical issues. May God provide him wellness, a method toward better communication, and bring that flicker of hope into a bright and roaring flame.
Pray for friends Karen, Christie, her son Calvin, Art, Heather, Chris and his family, Jackie and her father, Debby, Tom, Teresa, Hope, during the start of the year for their issues of many forms.
Pray for Thomas, as he is having a lot of chaos in his life. He is mourning the loss of his former wife, Mary Cathryn Michel-Lynch, as his father is doing the same.
Pray for Dawna who has been in a lot of pain.
Pray for Fran who is suffering a lot of pain and other issues.
Pray for Karen’s grandaughter Cyndal.
Pray for Marie’s Aunt Connie.
Pray that the Lord will find a way for my family to reach the ability to solutions that are necessary for health, shelter, and more.
Pray for our outreach ministries, and all on their separate prayer lists, no matter where in this world they would be.
Pray for all the members of Covenant of Hope and all those who they reach out to. May each of the members find grace and peace in His love.
Pray for our leaders, local, state, federal and around the world. That they make good decisions for the many.
May the LORD allow us to claim His truth and His healing hands. May we listen and hear and understand what those things we listen to and hear as well.
Prayer: Father in heaven, we thank You for this day and for these who are here to share it with us. We thank You for answering so many of our prayers. We pray that You would protect those who have suffered so much with the winter storms. We send up the prayers of all, whether friend or foe, known or unknown.  We ask these blessings in Your Holy Name through the gift of Jesus our Savior and the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.
Opening Song: A Song of Joy http://www.singsnap.com/karaoke/r/b18f17fa2

Sermon: We get into the history of Scripture in these verses, they connect both earlier in the Old Testament and on through the New Testament. It shows interesting and amazing things in regard to hope, to understanding the gift of Christ Jesus, because He is a gift, as He was a gift and as He will always be a gift for us. We start with an interesting view as to Jesus’s book of judgment. Everyone wonders about that book. The Psalms help to prove that, along with many others. Here we start with Psalm 40:7 KJV – Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me.
You’ll notice something interesting in this supporting verse. Jesus Himself mentions the Psalms. Not only that, He speaks of the prophets and the law of Moses. Luke 24:44 KJV – And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Jesus doesn’t just want us to simply listen to Him and His words. He wants us to think and draw from the Old testament to bring understanding, because knowledge and understanding lead us to wisdom. You will see it here in this verse. John 5:39 KJV – Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Testifying Jesus. Many have said a lot about testifying Jesus. There are many clues as to this testifying, and even praising and more in the Old Testament that lead us toward places in the New Testament like this one here in Acts 10:43 KJV – To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
Whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. Now, remission means to pardon our sins or offer forgiveness. Now, we’ve also heard much of this very thought throughout Scripture. It isn’t easy to “not” sin. We must live with the belief and faith that Jesus our Savior sees us in that book. Here is yet another view of that book in Hebrews 10:7 KJV – Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
We come to a verse that says so much, even just in the first part of it. ‘I delight to do thy will’. In other words, I’m glad to both listen and hear, and do. That’s what it means to have Him in our minds, hearts and spirits and souls.
Psalm 40:8 KJV – I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

We follow it up with another view of delight in the Lord. Job 23:12 KJV – Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
It isn’t easy to not just listen and hear, but also do. We have to remember what we do, however we react to things. It’s hard to not be angry over things. It’s also hard not to be frustrated and more. Many of us could testify to that. Yet, when we think before we act, which isn’t always easy, we see what Job would be saying, and also what this Psalm would be saying.
Jeremiah 15:16 KJV – Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.
One time long ago someone asked me why the words eat thy words. Many think of that in a bad way, as in I ate my words, which could be both bad or good. In this case, Jeremiah is speaking of absorbing through our thoughts, our understanding, to bring the Word into our hearts and souls is, in essence, eating. The reason is that we would be feeding our souls, in place of our stomachs.
John 4:34 KJV – Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Jesus is talking about spiritual food, the ability to strive for health, spirit and soul, would be the aim Jesus would share. It is something we all should share. Yet again, it’s no easy task. But then nothing that does the best thing would be very easy. We tend to be stubborn or would worry, and we know what God said about both. That’s why He gave us methods to absorb from the Holy Spirit, which was given to us through Jesus during His death and resurrection. We see a sample of that here in Romans 7:22 KJV – For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
Notice it speaks of the ‘inward man’. That is our conscience, our soul, our spirit. To hold the love of God there is to understand and be able to share that understanding. The words of David share just that here in this next verse Psalm 40:9 KJV – I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips. O LORD, thou knowest.
Righteousness, that contains a whole lot of learning points, including understanding and wisdom. Patience is also part of it, and it can be difficult to hold onto patience. We all have seen that, heard that, and done that. We want to be able to be good, and do good things, that is what we see here in Nehemiah 5:19 KJV – Think upon me, my God for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
When you think about giving good things to others, what would that include? For some it is donating time, sharing, and more. For others it is listening and hearing. Still we see those who would tutor and teach even outside the classroom. It also gives us a clue as to what David is sharing, support, protection, love, all things promised by God. This would also be shared here in Jonah 1:6 KJV – So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
You should remember when the storm shook the waters and the disciples shared fear. Jesus gave them a path to walk, and still the fear took over. So Peter started to sink into the water. This was all after Jesus had calmed the storm. That is what this shipmaster was asking of Jonah, to have God help them have safe voyage. Notice we always say stay safe, have a safe journey, good luck, and more. All of those are included in these verses today. Now, that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer Jesus taught us saying: After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Matthew 6:9-13 KJV)

Seek Joy and Hope After All Suffering Through Repentance

Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our sermon or midweek study. You will normally see us posted on Sunday and Wednesday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love. It doesn’t conform to society’s wishes. This ministry shares the Word of God, the Spirit of Christ Jesus. Those who know me well will recognize that there are definitive differences in the creation of every sermon from this point forward. It is God’s will that has brought this to be. We wish only that God’s truth will be shared within His words as brought to us by the Spirit as it fills my heart, mind, and soul to be shared with my hands, but with His words alone.
You will find us in the following location: http://www.covenantofhopeministries.blogspot.com

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

- Please pray for relief in the trials and tribulations for Sister Theresa and myself as we have had a great many over the past year and more.

- Be thankful for each day we live as we do not know what tomorrow brings.

- Pray for our nations that the voice of God be heard through the Spirit.

- Pray for our friends and families that their tomorrows bring blessings and pray our own be the same.

- Pray for those suffering as a result of the terrors that have occurred just this past week around this world.

- Pray for our sick and wounded that they may heal.

Prayer: Father in heaven, our prayer today is to have the Spirit bring clarity to each of our decisions. We thank You for that gift and the many more You have brought us. May our fears be drawn out of us. Help us to see the many gifts Your love brings and the unknown locations it might be found. May our pain and sorrow be eased. May peace be brought from our hearts and shared with others. May Your gifts of love shine through us toward others. We pray for the poor, the sick, the sorrowful, the wounded, and the frightened. We pray for the soldiers, the Samaritans, the children, and the rest. We pray in thanksgiving for every gift brought us. We pray that every tomorrow bring good things. For each of these we pray in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon:There are times in everyone’s life where it gets to the point we ask, and wonder if God hears. In the case of David, he shows that God does listen, and hear. He starts this portrayal here.

Psalm 40:1 KJV - I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

There is a change in the wording that could be in waiting I waited replacing waiting patiently. Our biggest problem in this world is we are never patient enough. There are some from my past who would call it having ants in our pants. Patience is something it takes a lot of control to manage. We don’t often have that much control over our emotions. You can remember that this was mentioned many times, bridling the tongue comes to mind. Tolerance is a form of patience, and again not an easy thing to manage. When God listens, there are many things that can happen. David shares one of those here.

Psalm 40:2 KJV - He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

The pit David speaks of, the miry clay, it is the emotions, the vices, the troubles we allow to consume our lives. Yes, we allow them their freedom. Imagine, each of us has our emotions, our fears, our pains and sorrows, so much all in a bottle, and if you uncork that bottle everything spills out, from tears to fury. Note, these are the bad things, not the good ones. David shares the way he celebrates the freedom from that miry clay, the horrible pit here.

Psalm 40:3-4 KJV - And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

What a wonderful thing to bring joy and gladness into life after horrible things we suffer and survive in our lives. It doesn’t matter what leads us to those bad times in our lives, it matters how we find a path thanks to God and His gifts of patience and understanding.

Psalm 2:12 KJV – Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are they that put their trust in him.

What we see in this supporting verse is that we must remember to thank God and Jesus through the Spirit, in prayers of thanksgiving. If we forget to do that, our hearts will be heavy with the forgetfulness. This is what the verse warns us about. There is so much to be thankful for in this world, no matter its chaos, the trials and tribulations, there are so many things to be thankful for. Remember, Scripture says to live for today, tomorrow will take care of its self. That isn’t as easy as it sounds, but it’s true, if you just live in the day, one at a time, you’ll find the miracles are around you. You will also see that there is so much you would miss if you always think of tomorrow and bring those troubles, the trials and tribulations to the surface of your thoughts. That’s what David shares again with us again here.

Psalm 40:5 KJV - Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

There is a word change here from they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee to none can order them unto thee. Do you remember what ‘reckoned’ means? It means to consider something, or rely on something or someone. We often forget how many wonderful works God can manage. We cannot manage to count them all, there are so many. This is what David is sharing.

Psalm 40:6 KJV - Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering thou hast not required.

David proves a point made often in Scripture, listen and hear to open our ears. It is one thing to listen, and another to hear. When we connect them, we gain understanding, which then leads to wisdom, all steps in reaching the ideal of righteousness. Often we don’t realize when we listen and hear we gain something huge in return, yet, again, here is another who proves just that.

Hosea 6:6 KJV - For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

What are all these verses related to? They relate to penance, to repentance. What does that mean? It means we have to learn to regret our past actions. Perhaps we were too hasty. Or we suffer from what I call leap before you look syndrome. We aren’t immune to this potential, and it doesn’t matter stature of any sort. All of us can leap before we look, hurry when we should take our time, and so forth. This is shared in the words of our Savior found here.

Matthew 9:13 KJV – But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Mercy is a gift. Repentance is a way to pave a path not just to righteousness, but to everlasting life, the promise Jesus gave us. David asks not just for mercy, he asks for hope, All of us ask for hope, just about every day we live. In many ways, asking God to help us find that hope is a method of seeking repentance.

We pray all these things in Your holy name, through the Saviour Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.
Opening Song: Be Blessed

Sermon: Now, you’ll wonder why I start without comments on this final segment of Psalm 39. Well, let’s put it this way, the verses in the Psalm of David speak for themselves. So, without further discussion here we begin with Psalm 39:9-10 KJV – I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.
Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.
Now the change for blow of thine hand is conflict. Many of us feel as though we suffer a lot of conflicts, some would call them body blows. Our ministry has suffered many of these over the years with health issues, technical difficulties and more. Yet, we do our best. We may not know how we will survive, but we persevere. David says he was dumb, keeping his mouth shut. We’ve heard this in many forms through Scripture. It isn’t easy to stay silent, not complain, express fury of all kinds. To have the patience, the stamina to do so, is a gift from God.
Psalm 39:11-12 KJV -  When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.
There is so much to talk about in these two verses. ‘his beauty  to consume away like a moth’ could also be seen as that which is to be desired in him to melt away. We all know what a moth is capable of in the realm of eating. We want to understand how much it means to David, in regard to vanity and the consumption of life as it is seen and used and spoken of. I’d imagine that no one figured those seven troubles were like a moth eating holes in our faith, our hope, our love, and our life. The verses also relate to another pair of verses. The first is found here in Leviticus 25:23 KJV – The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.
When we think of sojourners, we realize they are those who will go from place to place and stay just for a while. In this world there are many who would indeed do this, no matter the culture, the country, or the continent. These are the ones who choose to be like this, in place of those who have been forced out into the streets.
Psalm 39:13 KJV – O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more.
David is asking for time to gain strength, to become stronger after a long and difficult time, fighting the urge to speak, shout, argue, and more. It takes serious control of emotion to manage this. Biting our tongues, zipping our lips, shut our mouths, close them, and so forth, we all have seen the effect, experienced it for secrets shared as children to issues that could affect someone if it were to be spoken aloud. Gossip is a result of not holding our tongues. There is one supporting verse here in Job 16:20, 21 KJV – My friends  scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears of God.
O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour!
We get upset when our friends don’t believe us, when we are speaking the truth. We wonder why they don’t listen and hear. We all remember when hearing does much more than people really know. When we look at the word ‘rebuke’ we see that God is correcting our wrongs. This is where intercessory prayer, and even prayer that we bring to the Lord for our selves come into the picture. David and Job prove that in these words, even if they appear to be pessimistic, notice how David calls every man vanity in our first verses. We remember how vanity can do so much in the realm of bad news and more. Holding our tongues might seem to be difficult, but consider this, if we do, we are doing ourselves as much good as we are doing for the one venting frustrations and more. There would be no doubts that all of us have seen this, have actually done this, and so much more. It’s something we all should think about as we pray in the prayer Jesus taught us saying: After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Opening Song: Love and the Outcome

Sermon: Love, life, and death, these are the circle we know of as life. We were born through the gift that is life, in the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve drew their first breaths as human beings. Due to transgressions in the birth of seven troubles, death became part of human existence. This is one thing we have fought to prolongue, but only God knows the lengths of our lives. David, of course, is trying to convince God to tell him how long he will live. So, let’s share what he says.

Psalm 39:4 KJV - LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.

There is a word change here for ‘how frail I am’ and that would be ‘what time I have’, in other words, tell me when I’m going to die.
The NIV shares it this way,

Psalm 39:4 KJV - Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.

Again, we see it here, David wants to know, ‘Hey God, when am I going to die?’ The thing is, God knows, but He doesn’t know how, because free will determines that. That’s one gift He gave humanity in the very beginning.

Psalm 39:5 KJV - Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

Okay, so David wants to show us that our lives are like a blip on the radar for God. You see, David realized that God is eternal. He lives beyond everything humanity could think of or believe in. The word change found here is found where it says ‘at his best state’ which also could be seen as ‘settled’.

Psalm 90:4 KJV - For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

We know that God is infinite, omnipotent, everlasting, and eternal. Again, we only know what we need to know, what we should know. Sometimes our steps are difficult and we’ll fall down or off those paths. Many of us would rather know those pitfalls ahead of time.

Psalm 39:6 KJV - Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

There is a word change here from ‘a vain shew’ to a ‘conflict’. Well, we all have many a conflict and most of those have to do with something we want, in place of need, in other words one of the seven troubles we’ve spoken so much about, vanity. Even with a final testament regarding where our effects end up, that doesn’t mean they’ll go where we intend them to go.

Psalm 39:7-8 KJV - And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.
Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.

Now, these are interesting words. David is hoping against hope that God will help him do these things, without being foolish, and with sharing how, what, where, when, and why. We see similar thoughts in the NIV version as we look again at Psalm 39:7-8 - But now, Lord, what do I look for: My hope is in you.
Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools.

What do we look for in our footsteps to salvation? Sometimes that is no easy question for us to answer. Sometimes we have to remember the good parts of our lives, and let them overpower those bad ones. None of us can know which are going to be overpowered by our faith and hope and love. This is what David was seeking. His words merely echo what all of us often wonder or think.
