Being There for One Another

Sermon for Covenant of Hope Ministries

Good afternoon, and welcome to this Sunday Sermon for Covenant of Hope Ministries. I am Elder Cal Jennings working with Rev. Laura Neff. Today I am bringing the Sunday sermon as opposed to the midweek. Find us posted on Sundays and studies on Wednesday. Our locations are online only:
Rev. Laura’s Other Sites: Facebook & Twitter & Google+ & Blogspot
Our Main Video Feed: Covenant_of_Hope
We have email (instant messenger if you need me) through Facebook every day. These are now extremely variable. We’re still working this out between the two of us as to what will happen, our Elder, Cal Jennings and I. I will inform you further regarding changes. These changes were made due to health reasons. The sermon length has shortened dramatically. We are unsure as to when there might be video presentations.

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list has grown from last week. This is our current prayer list for this week.

- Please keep a friend, Debby, in your prayers for a swift recovery after major cancer surgery.
- Continue your prayers for Phoebe Fair’s family as they continue to grieve her loss.
- Please keep Elder Cal Jennings in your prayers as his health doesn’t know where it wants to be. He has recently, this past week, been in the hospital.
- Please pray for my friend Teresa’s sister who is in stage four cancer. Keep Teresa and her daughter in prayer for many other things that have been weighing down on their hearts, minds, and spirits.
- Please keep others known by any of us up in prayer for whatever they might need.
- Please keep my friend Heather in prayer for patience and safe haven.
- Let us keep those who have suffered from the weather in prayer, as they continue to weather the storms, the cold, and the dangers that can be found within them.
- Please keep my whole family in prayer for the pain, suffering, and chaos we are going through.
- Pray that the adversity and the pain we have seen around the world would be relieved, and swept away. May we find common ground in many ways, even if we start with just one step.
- Remember those who have been lost either violently or peacefully this week.
- Keep the ministry in your thoughts, each member, no matter their location, their circumstances, because a group of friends, a ministry, should support one another.
- There are many in our ministry who are searching for more in regard to our presence with my health, and with the health of others. We pray that there would be health found once more, and that we have answers to all and for all.

Prayer: Father in heaven, we thank You for this day and for these who are here to share it with us.

Sermon: One of the responsibilities we as Christians have is being there for one another. Yes, the church leaders are supposed to be there for the congregation but the congregation is supposed to be there for one another and for the church leaders as well. After all, the church leaders are still human and have troubles, needs, and joys just as any other member has. Be there for one another.

1 Thessalonians 5:10-11 New International Version (NIV)

10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:10-11 King James Version (KJV)

10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

We are supposed to be there for one another in bad times and in good. Besides people having illnesses or great sorrows, they also have events like the birth of a new child or grandchild, a promotion at work, a new house, or any number of other things. We are to be compassionate and empathetic with our fellow members. Be there for one another.

1 Corinthians 12:26 New International Version (NIV)

26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

1 Corinthians 12:26King James Version (KJV)

26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

Here is another verse that speaks of the same thing.

Romans 12:15 New International Version (NIV)

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

Romans 12:15 King James Version (KJV)

15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
Sometimes we get too involved in ourselves, in gossip, or in pointing out things wrong in others... which we shouldn't do... to notice or care if someone else is having a problem or a happy event. We are not to be selfish but to look to the needs of others as Christ did. We are to humble ourselves before the Lord. We are not to be vain or do things out of selfish ambition. We are to do things out of love for one another. Be there for one another.

Philippians 2:1-8 New International Version (NIV)

Imitating Christ’s Humility

2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
        even death on a cross!

Footnotes:

  1. Philippians 2:6 Or in the form of
  2. Philippians 2:7 Or the form

Philippians 2:1-8 King James Version (KJV)

2 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

We are not to be double minded, following both God and Satan. We are not to follow the world and seek material riches which will crumble but spiritual riches which will last an eternity in heaven. Be there for one another.

James 4:4-10 New International Version (NIV)

4 You adulterous people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[c]
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Footnotes:

  1. James 4:4 An allusion to covenant unfaithfulness; see Hosea 3:1.
  2. James 4:5 Or that the spirit he caused to dwell in us envies intensely; or that the Spirit he caused to dwell in us longs jealously
  3. James 4:6 Prov. 3:34

James 4:4-10King James Version (KJV)

4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Be there for one another. Be there for your church leaders. Do what you can to help others even if it's only a kind word. Everyone will have disagreements now and then but we must do what we can to avoid letting those disagreements interfere with the love of God. Be there for one another includes your pastor, your deacons, your elders, and your fellow brethren. We are all to love one another. That is what Jesus taught his whole life.

Jesus never advocated war. He taught us to forgive and turn the other cheek. Settle your differences in as peaceful way as possible. Love one another and forgive one another. Friends do whatever they can, no matter how far away they are. Miles don't matter, understanding and communication do. Be there for one another.

Now that's something to think about as we pray the prayer that Jesus taught us.

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Matthew 6:9-13 KJV)

What We Can Do Through Christ and the Holy Spirit

Covenant of Hope Ministries Sunday Sermon_8_23_2014
Good afternoon, and welcome to this Sunday Sermon for Covenant of Hope Ministries. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. The ministry knows me as the Rainbow Minister. I have often described myself as the Rainbow Minister. My reasoning for that is this: The rainbow symbolizes faith, understanding, and God’s strength to forgive, heal, and so on. Find us posted on Sundays and studies on Wednesday. Our locations are online only:

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list has grown from last week. This is our current prayer list for this week.
- Please pray for a friend of mine Debby, who has just had surgery this past week for a problem that has caused a great amount of grief. She has been in quite a lot of pain. Pray that her pain would ease. She is filled with faith and hope.
-Please pray that my new niece has a wonderful future. She was born this past week as a gift of God.
- Please keep Elder Cal Jennings in your prayers as he is still having so many issues with his health and has been unable to do what he loves to do, that is to spread the gift of Jesus and His love to all.
- Please pray for my friend Teresa’s sister who is in stage four cancer. Please pray also for relief in her current situation. That her patience continue and be rewarded.
- Please keep others known by any of us up in prayer for whatever they might need.
- Please keep my friend Heather in prayer for patience and safe haven.
- Please keep my whole family in prayer for the pain, suffering, and chaos we are going through. Please pray that the news we received this past week will prove fruitful in the coming week.

Prayer: Father in heaven, we thank You for this day and for these who are here to share it with us. We thank You for the gifts of patience and hope. We bring to you the families and friends who have suffered strife and more this week, that peace and comfort fill their hearts, minds, spirits, and souls. We pray for those who have been ill that they may heal. We pray for those who have died violently this week. We pray all of these things in Your Holy Name through Jesus Christ our Savior, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: Earlier this week I was given a single verse. That verse is one I sent to you in a message via email. With it came the inspiration for this sermon today. The gift that this one verse brings is something so many of us need right now. Let’s take a look at this gift and share it together.
Philippians 4:13 KJV – I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
A close friend of mine wrote this particular verse in a message to our mutual friends and I just before she had surgery a few days ago. Endurance in her struggle to regain her health and strength after cancer and many other issues including excruciating pain. There have been many surgeries to do whatever possible to remove that which has caused all her pain. Her family and friends have been rock steady, a gift God and Jesus brought to her during the toughest of times. Here is the parable Jesus brought that fits quite well. It is the parable of the Vine and Branches.
John 15:1-13 KJV – I AM the true vine, and our Father is the husbandman.
Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he shall purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
If a man abideth not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Hearin is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

When I was a young adult, eighteen, I heard this parable, and just this parable alone. For the first time I heard it in a way that impacted everything in life from that moment on. Friends of mine acted it out, sharing a visual portrayal of these very words. They did so in order to bring the truth to those who did not know, and prove that if you listen and hear, love can grow. That love is unconditional, whether family or friend.

What did that do to my heart and spirit? It gave me hope, and brought the first inklings of what He had in store for me. At that time I was in a clown ministry. Yes, that’s what I said, a clown ministry where the eight of us wore grease paint and colorful clothes. My clowning name was Rainbow. Why was this so? Well, like many times in the work I have done in the last eight years or more, the Bible dropped open in the middle of the story of Noah and the Ark, the covenant God brought, the seal of that promise, the rainbow.

This parable was, in the notes from my Bible, connected to the first listed, which is written in Philippians. Truly we should look closely at these and see how much they bring to us. What did the words Paul wrote to the Philippians bring from those written by John? In truth, it is simply this: Jesus and the Father brought us unconditional love. They also gave us something more. Yet, even now many do not realize just what that something would be.

Through the past week there has been a lot of horror. We have seen it in the senseless murders, riots, even the threats of still more war. When Jesus brought us this parable, and the Holy Spirit brought the words to Paul, we see one thing, and one thing alone. That one thing is HOPE. The greatest gift of unconditional love is our SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. Why is that? Well, He gives us HOPE through the gift He brought to us, the HOLY SPIRIT. Remembering the words of God brought from long ago into new points of view now, today, makes them more meaningful, and gives us the ability to see them in a new light. That is what the Spirit brought to us this week through my hands. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer Jesus taught us saying: After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Our mission for Covenant of Hope Ministries and Poetic-Expressions is not to exploit fear, but to conquer it, and overcome all that is created through fear together as the rainbow in the darkness.

This mission statement speaks of the rainbow in the darkness. Every time I would have a seriously traumatic thing happen in my life I would wake in the middle of the night. When I do I see a rainbow at the end of my bed, or even through the window behind my head. I’ll see that rainbow in a dark room even during the day. It will hover in the shadows and reassure me that God is with me.

The Mustard Seed Share Faith and You Will See It Too

Covenant of Hope Ministries Sunday Sermon_1_8_2014

Good afternoon, and welcome to this Sunday Sermon for Covenant of Hope Ministries. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. The ministry knows me as the Rainbow Minister. I have often described myself as the Rainbow Minister. My reasoning for that is this: The rainbow symbolizes faith, understanding, and God's strength to forgive, heal, and so on. Find us posted on Sundays and studies on Wednesday.

- Sister Theresa has several prayers to include this week. Her nephew was run over by a car and was last known to be critical condition. Her sister Donna went into shock and had a breakdown as a result, praise the Lord she has calmed down since then. Her sister Patti is suffering a continuously deteriorating spine. Her sister Kim is anxious to go see Patti, and also concerned with Patti and her condition. Sister Theresa is having many things, financially, spiritually, and family wise that are bearing her down quite a lot.
- Please keep Elder Cal Jennings in your prayers as he has been suffering a lot with his weakness and more this week. Pray also for his methods of communicating with us. May God answer our prayers to assist him in continuing to do so.
- Please keep others known by any of us up in prayer for whatever they might need.
- Please keep my friend Heather in prayer for patience and safe haven.
- Please keep my whole family in prayer for the pain, suffering, and chaos we are going through. Pray that our answers will be managed in a miracle from the past week. Praise God for that blessing. Praise God, more than half our prayers have been answered. May the Good Lord Above bring us one last answer for something closer to stability.
- Pray that the adversity and the pain we have seen around the world would be relieved, and swept away. May we find common ground in many ways, even if we start with just one step.
- Remember those who have been lost either violently or peacefully this week. There have been far too many worldwide lost in violence, friends, family, and even colleagues suffering terrible things.

We thank you for patience and faith. We bring friends and family and those we don't know up to You in prayer for their troubles, trials, and to help their faith. We bring to You those who are injured and suffering that Your love and grace will bring them peace. We ask only that Your healing grace and love embrace each of them. We do so in Your Holy Name through Jesus Christ our Savior, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Opening Song: Faith as Small http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TpR2O5Z8rg

Sermon: This week has been tough for so many. In fact this year I have heard and seen so much strife around this world we live in. Just a few days ago an entire community went into an uproar to the point state patrols had to replace city and county forces due to the amount of violence. This was in the area where I grew up as a child. Now, many around the world have seen this very same scenario. Some of us up front and in person. It is in times like these that we really wonder how we can hold onto faith. Remember, it isn’t easy, but even the smallest spark of faith is enough to help it grow. Let’s remember this as we reflect on something Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew 13:31 KJV – Another parable put he forth unto them saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed into his field:
Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.
You can’t grow faith and peace without sharing it. One tiny seed needs sunlight, earth, and nurturing. Peace needs faith, love, and the ability to share them one to another. Faith needs heart, spirit, and soul, and it too can grow. You notice something? Everything needs something to grow, from the smallest, to the largest, from imagination to reality, from concept to four dimensions and functional. Every single consideration starts with one element. That would be faith. Here is another time Jesus teaches a lesson in faith.
Matthew 17:20 KJV – And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Obstacles don’t just have to be like a mountain to climb or go around. They could be something we feel would be a disability. Remember, Jesus gives us ways around those. It may not pull you out of that wheelchair, or out of that bed you’ve had to be confined to, but, it can, in fact, free your mind. You see, free will is the best gift of unconditional love. Remembering that fact, the gift of all time, will give your spirit and soul wings, even if we haven’t got limbs able to move.

When my children were young there was a neighbor who couldn’t speak, couldn’t walk, and couldn’t move most of her body. Yet, she had an unmistakeable spirit. You always knew she was in the room. She could laugh, even if she couldn’t make words with her voice. What was the best part? She willingly shared it with anyone who would just say hello. I have worked with people who can’t walk, see, or hear. It is amazing how the loss of one ability brings to life a stronger view of the rest.

One of my siblings proved to me that even without legs she could do so much. She could climb just using her hands. Even with all that was against her, my sister survived, and thrived until the mechanical wonder that saved her life at birth stopped functioning. Jesus proved that disability shouldn’t hold you down, and disease the same. All you have to do is travel back through Scripture and see the miracles He provided. What did these miracles bring? Faith!

The loss of my sister did something once my sorrow had disipated. She, in my memories, brought me the rainbow. Yes, you read that correctly. Years before that, when I was on my way to college at eighteen, my little sister was seven. On that last day she pulled my hand in hers and asked me to take the rainbow and help it grow.

It took me around eighteen years to figure out what she meant by that. What happened then? I met my mentor and two others came with her. They taught me that my faith did exist, even if I couldn’t see it. The gift of that mustard seed was enough to prove my sister’s words true. Two years later I was ordained. That was now seven years ago. Faith, no matter how small it starts out to be, can grow so much. There is the mustard seed, and also the grain of sand. Imagine if you will, each step out on faith would be like adding one more grain of sand to a sandcastle. There could also be a single seed becoming a vine filled with roses, or grapes. All those take faith, love, and the willingness to help them grow.

It took nineteen years, yes, nineteen years, for my faith to go from a mustard seed to where I became a minister. Where did it start? My little sister gave me a gift. That gift was this: Take your rainbow and share it, then the darkness will go away. She was right. God gave her that wisdom. It was that memory that brought me to where I am today. Without doubt, that little mustard seed was seen by three people who were, and are, my mentors in the ministry. They helped me see how to make that little seed grow.

Jesus said have faith. It could be the smallest pinpoint of light. Yet that tiny pinpoint could light up the world if we let it do so. How can we do it? Share it. Faith only grows if you give it life, and pass it on. Faith is a gift of God’s love, through Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer Jesus taught us saying: After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
