Jesus Built the Only Path We Need Through Each Heart Drawn Toward His Eternal and Unconditional Love

**Announcement: Still having sound issues with my laptop this week. Apologies for the lack of video.

Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our Sunday sermon. You will normally see us posted in written and live form on Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love. This ministry shares the Word of God, the Spirit of Christ Jesus in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ. It is God’s will that has brought this to be. We wish only that God’s truth will be shared within His words as brought to us by the Spirit as it fills my heart, mind, and soul to be shared with my hands, but with His words alone.

You will find us in the following location: http://www.covenantofhopeministries.blogspot.com

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

- Please continue to pray for Evangelist Cal Jennings who has been suffering greatly with his health. May the Lord bring his spirits up and help heal him.

- Please keep several friends and other family members in prayer for their trials and tribulations. They have each requested to remain anonymous for the time being. One is facing several rounds of surgery in the near future. One has just recently gotten out of the hospital after a bout with food poisoning, may they get well quickly. Another pair who have had serious issues with pain levels and other health issues in recent weeks and months. May their pain ease sooner rather than later.

- Pray for the economy around this world as inflation and supply chains continue to suffer from extremely high prices for fuel.

- May the droughts, floods, and other weather chaos around the world become less of an issue for daily life around this world.

- Be thankful for each day we live as we do not know what tomorrow brings.

- Pray for our nations that the voice of God be heard through the Spirit.

- Pray for our friends and families that their tomorrows bring blessings and pray our own be the same.

- Pray for those suffering as a result of the terrors that have occurred just this past week around this world.

- Pray for our sick and wounded that they may heal.

Prayer: Father in heaven, our prayer today is to have the Spirit bring healing to each of our bodies, minds, spirits, and souls. We pray for strength of will for those who seek harmony in the workplace, streamlined methods and more. We pray for enlightenment and understanding while studying Your Word. We thank You for these awesome gifts and the many more You have brought us. May our fears be drawn out of us. Help us to see the many gifts Your love brings and the unknown locations it might be found. May our pain and sorrow be eased. May peace be brought from our hearts and shared with others. May our children and their teachers have a good school session this year into next. May Your gifts of love shine through us toward others. We pray for the poor, the sick, the sorrowful, the wounded, and the frightened. We pray for the soldiers, the Samaritans, the children, and the rest. We pray in thanksgiving for every gift brought us. We pray that every tomorrow would bring good things. For each of these we pray in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: We continue our exploration of Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae and will complete the second chapter today. We are starting with the last verse of Colossians that we had last Sunday to complete the thought and lead us into this week’s sermon. Paul is pointing out the origins of Christian faith and how the church already was portraying the truth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Paul again points out that all who adopt Christianity are part of the church, in spirit and in life as Jesus taught.

Colossians 2:13-14 KJV – And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

NIV – When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

Being dead in your sins and alive in Christ through faith. This is what Paul is referring to. All of this hinges onto belief and sharing that belief in the existence of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Savior. Though Paul and the remaining ten Apostles had been there to witness it in full, these people in the towns of Colossae, Rome, Ephesus, Corinth, and all the other cities had no knowledge of the truth that was for their lives. They had not yet heard of the gift of God’s love and the first moments where the existence of our Savior was promised as shared here in the words of King David, first king of the Jews.

Psalm 51:1 KJV – Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

NIV – Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

Paul references his own letters on a regular basis. In this case, he reflects on the letter to those citizens of Ephesus. He points out that the work Jesus did took away a lot, but if we don’t stay in that path, on that path, we will lose that protection that Jesus afforded all of us upon His resurrection three days after He was crucified, dead and buried.

Ephesians 2:15-16 KJV – Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

NIV – by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.

Peter, much like his fellow Apostle Paul, has his thoughts to add to the explanation. This particular verse is shared in many ways for a great many reasons. Righteousness is the direct opposite of sin and sinfulness. Being dead to sin is one of many steps toward ultimate righteousness.

1 Peter 2:24 KJV –Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

NIV –“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

We get back to the letter to the church at Colossae. Paul shows that political and economic chaos is often a result of sin and sinfulness and that they should steer clear of those thoughts and activities and leave them separate from the church. This is an ideal that has continued into present day where many keep the thought of church and state separate entities.

Colossians 2:15 KJV – And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

NIV – And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Paul again refers to his own writings in the letter to the church at Ephesus.

Ephesians 6:12 KJV – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

NIV – For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

At this point, Paul is referring to words spoken by Jesus Christ as seen here in the gospel of John the Beloved.

John 12:31 KJV – Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

NIV – Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.

Finding the “Prince of This World” is not all that difficult. This “prince” is none other than Satan, the purest form of evil known in, on, and around this world we live in. Paul is warning the citizens of Colossae that this evil being is still wreaking havoc, still has much to do with all the chaos found in this world. It is for this reason that all these letters were written. Jesus made it a mission for all of His apostles and disciples, to teach as He taught, to preach His Word, God’s Word, to as many as would listen in the far reaches of the world. Paul knows just how easy a person can fall off the path and end up in a dark, desolate place. This is why his letters carried warnings within them, a lot like this next verse here.

Colossians 2:16 KJV – Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

NIV – Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

Judgment, Holy Judgment, specifically, is the sole responsibility of One Man, the Holiest of Holy Men, Jesus Christ. That moment when He comes to judge the living and the dead is the only moment when this sort of judgment should be meted out. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. This is the eighth commandment in the original view shared in Exodus chapter 20. It is the day of complete rest, symbolizing the seventh day of creation. There are too many in this world who consider Saturday, Sunday to be just another day on the calendar, however, for God it is more important to commune with Him on the seventh day than to worry about chores and all the rest. Jesus reiterates the words of His Father here in the Gospel of Mark and Paul reinforces the thought with his letter to the Romans.

Mark 2:27 KJV – And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

NIV – Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Romans 14:3 KJV – Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.

NIV – The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.

There is so much to understand in Paul’s letters to the various fledgling churches scattered from Italy through Asia Minor and Greece, far and wide. Paul is working to prove that God’s mysterious ways would be far more than we could possibly imagine, and yet, the rules He provided us with to live by are often ignored, misused, and abused. This is what Paul is warning the churches about as shared in this next verse.

Colossians 2:17 KJV – Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

NIV – These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

In the opening verses of the Gospel of John the Beloved we find these next words, providing a lineage for the existence of the Son of God and Man, Jesus Christ. The promise made not once, not twice, but thousands of times between the days of Adam and Eve all the way up to the prophet Malachi.

John 1:17 KJV – For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

NIV – For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

The law is one element given as a gift to be used wisely and honestly. The gifts of grace and truth were brought to reinforce that honesty and wisdom and provide the foundation of Unconditional Love.

Matthew 11:28-29 KJV – Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

NIV – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

In this world we live in, people do not understand the lengths Jesus went to in order to prove God’s truth. They didn’t realize that the prophecy promised in the days of Adam and Eve, shared through Abraham, Moses, King David, and all the way through up to the moment of Immaculate Conception. Every nation in this world has origin stories of one form or another. The Biblical view of Creation is one that shares more than simply humanity, but everything, animals, the elements of life, galaxies and more. True Christians, per the prophets, Apostles, disciples, and followers of Christ need to understand just how important belief and faith in that belief would be. We see this in the words of the Hebrews here, exactly what Jesus came to this earth to do, and how His existence was first predicted and then proven to be absolute truth.

Hebrews 8:5 KJV – Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

NIV – They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

Hebrews 10:1 KJV – For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

NIV – The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.

God’s law is only a shadow of the good things coming. Eternal life, that’s what the Hebrew prophets were saying. Paul reminds the people of Colossae not to fall for those “false prophets”, the “soothsayers”, that Jesus had called out during His earthly lifetime. Focusing on truth is something that can be difficult even today. In those days it was difficult because of the more arduous methods for trading information from one place to another. We see more of that here.

Colossians 2:18 KJV – Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

NIV – Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.

Ironically, this world is seeing this same issue, for the opposite reason. Nowadays we have tons and tons of auxiliary information, noise, commotion that has little to no fully enriching purpose. In the old days people considered the inane chatter to be gossip. We have tons and tons of that in this world. We all know what James the Just, little brother of Christ, had to say about that. Paul didn’t pause to caution people about listening to such idle chatter. We see that in this letter to the citizens of Corinth and Rome.

1 Corinthians 4:6 KJV –And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.

NIV –Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.

Romans 8:6-7 KJV – For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

NIV – The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.

Paul’s writing, in all of his letters, pointed out the failures of willpower and the loss of our straight and narrow path toward Jesus and the path He created. People then and now acquiesce to the powers that be. It was Jesus who routed out those moneychangers in the temple. Yet, here we are, those same moneychangers in modern clothes are again in places we consider holy. Paul is pointing out that we need to be more committed to our faith than we are to things, material, monetary, and so forth. Things get old, are discarded at some point, left to the wayside, but our spiritual hearts, our purity found in faith, must be nurtured, must be allowed to flourish through our lives and spread out to family, friends, and more, as the “Manna” that God gave the Jews to eat during the famine and droughts of their forty years in the wilderness. This is one of the many references to that time as Paul shared in Colossae.

Colossians 2:19 KJV – And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

NIV – They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

What Paul is showing the people in the churches is that, no matter how far apart we might live, all followers of Christ are connected as brothers, sisters, faithfully portraying the path that Jesus gave us to follow. We have to remember the lengths to which the Apostles and disciples managed first while Jesus was alive, and then on for the first decades after the resurrection. Paul has several moments where he writes about this very subject as seen in these verses in the letters to the citizens of Ephesus and Galatia.

Ephesians 4:15-16 KJV – But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

NIV – Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Galatians 1:6-9 KJV – I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

NIV – I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

Paul is warning us, as Jesus did. Remember about the warnings of the soothsayers? The double-tongued? The false prophets and teachers? This is something we have to be aware of even this far in the future. We all have those creepy crawler feelings when we hear something that doesn’t sound truthful in some way. There are those in this world who have walked into a church expecting a great experience and yet they stand up in the middle of the service and walk out, disgusted by what they heard within the walls there. Remember, Jesus considered them to be evil, those who didn’t teach the truth the way it should be taught, as, plain, and simple, God’s truth. Jesus promised us the same paradise God promised to Adam and Eve, Moses, Abraham, David, Solomon, and the rest that there would come a day when all the sin in this world would be destroyed in full. This is what Paul shares here. We are only of this earth for a short time. The times, they are a changing.

Colossians 2:20 KJV – Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

NIV – Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:

Notice how, in this verse of the letter to Colossae, Paul breaks everything down to the very essence, the elements, the chemical and spiritual portions of life itself. He is portraying the fact, yes, the fact, that God knows us all the way to the last molecule. Jesus said, in one of His many sermons, that God knows each of us to the very last hair on our heads. This is what Paul is showing, that even our faith must be portrayed and expressed in every possible way, physically, mentally, spiritually, consciously, subconsciously, and unconsciously as well.

Romans 6:2-5 KJV – God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

NIV – By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

All of us are tied together because we are “human”, uniquely created by God, known before we were conceived in our mothers’ womb. Faith can exist as early as our first breath. Transforming that faith is something we first are taught to do and then transform into different forms as we get older and, hopefully wiser in life. Paul reminds us that every heart needs to work at being faithfully Christian. Every human heart is just that, human. Every spiritual heart is part of that same human heart and mind, but takes work not just physically, but mentally, spiritually, soulfully. These two excerpts from the letter to Galatia prove some of that.

Galatians 4:3 KJV – Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

NIV – So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world.

Galatians 4:9 KJV – But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

NIV – But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?

One of the most important verses in the second chapter of Colossians isn’t even a full sentence! It’s an inner thought from Paul that proves exactly what we should NOT do as Christians. That is, honestly, keep evil and wickedness out of our heads, our minds, our hearts.

Colossians 2:21 KJV – (Touch not; taste not; handle not;

NIV – “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?

It is the opposite of those four monkeys we remember from imagery, they were proving see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing, do nothing. We can also see them as don’t watch it, don’t listen to it, don’t repeat it, don’t follow the ones doing those things around us. Yes, it is hard to do. Yes, He knows that. Yes, it can be achieved. All of us have been able to resist the many views of temptation, and there are billions upon billions of methods to indulge in that very same vice. The thought is completed in this next verse.

Colossians 2:22 KJV – Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

NIV – These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.

Rules, rules, rules. So many of us cannot handle rules! There are literally thousands of rules and regulations in this world. Yet, for God, there is only one rule that includes every other rule within it. Those are all contained in two words, which Jesus repeated, dozens of times, in thirty-three years of life. Those words are Unconditional Love and the rule would be part and parcel Love One Another, as Jesus asked us in John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” and repeated in John 15:17 “This is my command. Love each other”. Here he says it in the Gospel of Matthew as well.

Matthew 15:9 KJV – But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

NIV – They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’”

God wants us to get closer to Him spiritually. He portrayed this in every single word that is written in the Bible. He portrays it every day in the fact that we exist together on this great big earth. He wants us to realize and recognize that we are His children! We are His, not just because we are human beings, but because we made the choice to follow the Word of God as Christ taught those around Him to teach us.

Isaiah 29:13 KJV – Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

NIV – The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.

Our last verse in the second chapter of the epistle to Colossae Paul portrays what wisdom can be found in the worship which portrays humility and existentially honoring the memory and existence of Jesus Christ, and God the Father who allowed for His only begotten Son to be a living sacrifice to save all of humanity that would follow Him in the path of righteous faith.

Colossians 2:23 KJV – Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

NIV – Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Pay attention to truth, God’s truth. It is the path, true path, of righteousness as Jesus led His Apostles and Disciples, as He continues to do the same in the gift of the Holy Spirit to this very moment in time and on into the future until the time comes. We see this sentiment carried on in the letter to the Romans and then through the eyes of the Apostle Timothy as well.

Romans 13:14 KJV – But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

NIV – Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

1 Timothy 4:8 KJV –For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

NIV –For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

The two men remind us yet again, of the words Jesus shared while He lived on this earth as the gospel writer Matthew shares here.

Matthew 23:27-28 KJV – Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

NIV – “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

God IS love! God IS the greatest and the least, God is the first and the last, our Alpha and Omega! Jesus, the Son of God, was sent not to condemn the world, but to save it. Jesus, the way, the truth, and the light as more than just words, more than actions, more than all of that. This is what Paul worked so hard to prove and portray through his lifetime after the resurrection. All of the Apostles and Disciples, the siblings of Jesus, all of them, worked hard to prove that this would be absolute truth. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)

  1. Thank you, Rev. Laura. The only thing that I have to add is this.

    Matthew 22:37-39
    New International Version

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a](A) 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b](B)
