Prayer: Father in heaven, our prayer today on this beautiful Sunday is to have the Holy Spirit bring joy and peace to our hearts, faith to our minds, and healing to each of our bodies, and souls. We pray for those who have suffered unjustly for things they could not control. We pray for those who have lost faith and live in paralyzing fear and sorrow. We pray for the homeless and the jobless in this world. We pray for the hungry and the malnourished. We pray for the poor, weak, and sorrowful people in this world. We pray in thanksgiving for all the great gifts that You have given us, even if we don’t always realize they are there. We pray in hope and patience for those things that are worrying us in our hearts and minds. For each of these we pray in Your Holy Name, through our Savior Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: This Sunday like all other days of the week, we should continue to have the glorious knowledge that Jesus Christ is the Risen Lord, our Eternal Savior and the owner and bringer of the Path to Salvation. Paul, in all of his letters to the churches, wanted to punch this glorious fact home. He did so without embellishment, but with concise speech, and pointed delivery of his lessons for everyone listening and hearing the letters he would write. We start the third chapter of his letter to Rome with something that hits home with Christians then, but easily could have been written by his hand even today.

Romans 3:1 KJV –What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?

NIV –What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision?

Something to think about as we study Romans is the beginnings of all the writings in Paul’s thirteen separate letters, of which we have traversed through most of them by this point. The significance and importance of Romans would be in the ease of use by presenting a massive session of questions and answers for the people of the one church that Paul wished with all his heart to have been able to walk into freely to preach the Word of God. Paul’s wish to be able to do this also reflects on a famous brother who lost his birthright to serve as Jacob’s son, and the one to carry on the traditions of God, Esau, who became embittered and felt fully betrayed by his younger brother and that brother’s mother.

Genesis 25:32 KJV – And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

NIV – “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”

One who lived the Word from the moment he was chosen to follow Jesus, to the moment he died, was John the Beloved. This is one of those mysteries that people still have to contend with when it comes to the Word as it was spoken by our Savior. In this passage, Jesus is teaching and preaching with the Gentiles. The reason Paul is referencing this, would be in the fact that the Romans didn’t worship one God, but many at that time. It’s no simple thing to completely transform an entire nation of people from polytheistic, or many gods followed, to monotheistic as in the study and following of God who brought a Savior to remind us of the importance of faith and belief in that faith.

John 4:22 KJV – Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

NIV – You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.

Paul continues to share many memories of his time in our Savior Jesus Christ’s presence, learning the truths of God’s existence as he writes this.

Romans 3:2 KJV –Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

NIV –Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.

With this verse, Paul draws from the references of the Old Testament writings of Moses and David as well as the writings of the gospel writer Luke.

Deuteronomy 4:8 KJV – And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

NIV – And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?

Psalm 147:19-20 KJV – He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel. He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the LORD.

NIV – He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel. He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the LORD.

Acts 7:38 KJV – This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

NIV – He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; and he received living words to pass on to us.

At the time in Rome, there were a lot of issues with “BELIEF and UNBELIEF”. Again this was caused by the transformation from Polytheistic to Monotheistic ministries. He points out a sticking point people, even in the world of Judaism. Many Jews did not want to believe that Jesus was the Savior. To this day, there are those who do not believe in the fact that Jesus has risen and ascended to Heaven on the right hand of God the Father. To this day, there are doomsday soothsayers. The day is coming. Believe it, just as Paul shares here.

Romans 3:3 KJV –For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?

NIV –What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness?

Unbelief, is something we need to change as true Christians should, with grace and aplomb, with peace and patience, as well as all the other graces God’s unconditional love brings. We see this in the words of John the Beloved, Paul’s second letter to Timotheus and the writings of the Hebrew prophets as well.

John 1:16 KJV – And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

NIV – Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.

2 Timothy 2:13 KJV –If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

NIV –if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

Hebrews 4:2 KJV – For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

NIV – For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.

One of the hardest things for mankind to comprehend is that “truth” has many points of view by humanity. Whereas, with God there is one path of supreme truth, and the rest would be lies. This is why Jesus warned us to not listen to the soothsayers, the false teachers, the fools, the seven troubles running rampant, the impure, the materialistic, the hypocrites, and those who could not be humble. We see this influence in Paul’s letter to Rome.

Romans 3:4 KJV –God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

NIV –Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.”

One of the most misunderstood scrolls in Scripture is Job. Why would a man tormented by seriously devastating peril through the dealings of Satan be laid bare for all of us to read? Why would sorrow, depression, debilitating pain and anguish be portrayed in this way? There is a simple reason. God wants us to realize that there is more to life than we sense with our hearts, minds, bodies, and souls. There is more to life than waking up, going to school or work, watching television, experiencing the news in any and all formats. There’s much more to being Christian than going through the motions. Sure, you can go to church every Sunday, but does that mean you are truly Christian? Look what Jesus did in the temple when the moneychangers were there. Look what Jesus did to point out that the Jews were not seeing the acts of a godly Jew, including the healing of the lepers, the healing of the man that could not walk, and all the rest, even on Sabbath. Healing is something that fulfills faith in a million ways. True and godly healers focus on faith and belief, more than signs and symbols. We see this thought in all these supporting verses, and including the words of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Job 40:8 KJV – Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?

NIV – “Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?

Psalm 51:4 KJV – Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

NIV – Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.

Psalm 116:11 KJV – I said in my haste, All men are liars.

NIV – in my alarm I said, “Everyone is a liar.”

Luke 20:16 KJV – He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

NIV – He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”

Paul was notorious for putting human points of view on display in his letters. This next verse proves that much. He punctuates something that so often is confusing to people who don’t understand Scripture very well. This is shown here.

Romans 3:5 KJV –But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)

NIV –But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.)

Those who don’t believe in Scripture, in God, the Holy Trinity, have issues with some of the ways that the Apostles and the Gospel writers portrayed faith, belief, and how we are to pursue these. The definitions of righteousness are: characterized by uprightness or morality:

a righteous observance of the law.

morally right or justifiable: righteous indignation.

acting in an upright, moral way; virtuous: a righteous and godly person.

It takes time, practice, deep rooted faith and belief to understand the ins and outs of true righteousness. Though many might say they are righteous, it’s a lot to live up to, and takes continuous humility, faith, study, and practice. Here are some cautionary tales from the rest of Scripture and Paul’s letters to Corinth and Galatia.

Genesis 18:25 KJV – That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

NIV – Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

Job 8:3 KJV – Doth God pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice?

NIV – Does God pervert justice? Does the Almighty pervert what is right?

1 Corinthians 9:8 KJV –Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?

NIV –Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing?

Galatians 3:15 KJV – Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.

NIV – Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case.

If we don’t remember the fact, yes fact, that we must continuously study, practice, prove, and share our faith, we are not living a life that will provide hope for the next generations. If we don’t remember that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that we wouldn’t die eternally, then what do we truly believe? If we don’t realize and recognize that the resurrection has occurred and the days of judgement are coming sooner than we may ever be prepared for, we will suffer perdition, hell, eternal death and destruction. This is what Paul shares as his cautionary tale to the Romans.

Romans 3:6 KJV –God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?

NIV –Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world?

Are we understanding yet that Paul is pointing out that Jesus is our Supreme Judge? Do we see that this FACT is coming to light sooner than we are even prepared to welcome or dread? Have we confessed our sins and asked for His forgiveness? Or are we caught in the space of “standing room only”, or “no room at the inn”? We see many references that Paul drew from, Moses, Job, and our Savior Jesus Christ in the writings of the gospel writer Luke.

Job 34:17-19 KJV – Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just? Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly? How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

NIV – Can someone who hates justice govern? Will you condemn the just and mighty One? Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’ and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’ who shows no partiality to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of his hands?

Luke 20:16 KJV – He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

NIV – He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”

Paul doesn’t stop here. In fact, he had plenty of moments to continuing the narrative of the unconditional love of our Savior Jesus Christ. This unconditional love is, yes, is, the most important part of our faith that we should pursue in every possible way. Whether it is in studying Scripture, sharing it with those around us, writing about it, immersing ourselves within it, or anything else, the pursuit of God’s Ultimate Truth is a pursuit worth chasing.

Romans 3:7 KJV –For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

NIV –Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?”

Paul points out in this verse that “NO ONE” born on this earth is exempt from sin. The seven troubles that were set loose on this world upon the betrayal that the “Serpent” known as “Satan” managed in the Garden of Eden where temptation won over faithful and unconditional love. The stain of original sin is found in our very DNA. The history of the seven troubles, vanity, envy, lust, enmity, wrath, shame, and doubt could not be portrayed more easily than in the story most children recognize as the “Coat of Many Colors”, the life of the youngest son of Jacob, named Joseph. This is the moment his elder brothers realized and recognized the brother they betrayed and attempted to destroy.

Genesis 37:8-9 KJV – And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

NIV – His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said. Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

Genesis 37:20 KJV – Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

NIV – “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

Genesis 50:18-20 KJV – And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

NIV – His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said. But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

Joseph is just one of those who understood righteousness, faith, and true belief. He is just one who understood just how bad the seven troubles could be. We see this in these other observations of Isaiah and the Hebrew prophets.

Isaiah 10:6-7 KJV – I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

NIV – I send him against a godless nation, I dispatch him against a people who anger me, to seize loot and snatch plunder, and to trample them down like mud in the streets. But this is not what he intends, this is not what he has in mind; his purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations.

Hebrews 2:13 KJV – And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

NIV – And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

Paul points out that being liars is not the way to pursue a godly, Christian life. Jesus said the same. Many of the prophets in Scripture pointed this out as well. We see Paul’s take on this factor in human existence here.

Romans 3:8 KJV –And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.

NIV –Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—"Let us do evil that good may result"? Their condemnation is just!

Jesus pointed out, in His Sermon on the Mount, what good versus evil already looked like, and continues to look like today. Truly devout and faithful Christians often forget that faith should be shared and shown in all of our actions and reactions. Now, in this world, that’s not easy. It’s the reason we have confession, prayer, and other methods for repentance.

Matthew 5:11 KJV – Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

NIV – “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

Evil, sin, wickedness, dishonor, deception, are all indicators of those who will not be recognized as “His sheep” at final judgement. Repentance carries quite a lot of weight, and Paul points this out in so many ways, throughout all the letters he wrote. It is shown here in his second letter to Corinth and Peter adds to this.

2 Corinthians 6:8 KJV –By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;

NIV –through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;

2 Corinthians 11:15 KJV –Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

NIV –It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

1 Peter 3:16-17 KJV –Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

NIV –keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

Yet another fact that Paul points out is that we are all equals, no matter how well educated we are, or how wealthy, or poor, or any of that. Money doesn’t matter to God. Faith, belief, sharing them both, in a truthful, wise, and knowledgeable way is the path that Jesus leads us toward even in Spirit. This is something that takes a lot of people quite a while to fully understand. We see this in how Paul portrays the factors in this next verse.

Romans 3:9 KJV –What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

NIV –What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.

Humanity is inherently inclined to sin. This is something that has transcended from the days of the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. It is when humanity utilized the one gift we still hold of God’s faith in us. That one gift is free will. We have the choice to believe, or not. We have the choice to be faithful to God and Jesus, or not. This is something that takes knowledge, practice, and still more practice to fully understand and pursue with true godly wisdom. We see this in the words of King Solomon here, along with Isaiah, and in the words of the gospel writer Luke.

Proverbs 20:9 KJV – Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

NIV – Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin"?

Isaiah 65:5 KJV – Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

NIV – who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me, for I am too sacred for you!’ Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day.

Luke 7:39 KJV – Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

NIV – When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

The Pharisee portrayed by Luke is proving that all humankind has faults. Forgiveness is something that God is willing to give to those who are honest about their sins, their faults, all of the earthly parts of humanity. It’s proven in the actions of our Savior Jesus Christ when He forgave the prostitutes, the sinners of all forms and formulas, the lepers, and so many others. Our last excerpt from the scroll of Romans is this one.

Romans 3:10-11 KJV –As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

NIV –As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.

Righteousness is the combination of understanding the Word of God and pursuing it with all our hearts, minds, spirits, and souls. We see glimpses of that in these three excerpts from King David’s Psalms and also in the words of John the Beloved in his first letter.

Psalm 14:1 KJV – To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

NIV – For the director of music. Of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.

Psalm 53:1-2 KJV – To the chief Musician upon Mahalath, Maschil, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.

NIV – For the director of music. According to mahalath. A maskil of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good. God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.

Psalm 143:2 KJV – And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

NIV – Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you.

1 John 1:8 KJV –If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

NIV –If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

It is very important to portray our faith with truth, through unconditional love, believing in everything that Jesus stands for, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
