Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our combined written and live Sunday sermon, which is normally broadcast every Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love, sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Jesus Christ in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.
- Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog has asked that we pray for her mother’s health. She also asks for prayers for her brother’s attitude and also for Rabbi Karen’s stress levels.
- We pray for JB’s sister Debbie, who is undergoing proton treatment for cancer at this time.
- We pray for my nephew Auggie who fell and did a number on his knee on Wednesday, causing serious swelling and bruising, but thankfully nothing broke. Let’s pray that it heals quickly and well.
- We pray for my sister-in-law Fran who is preparing to undergo surgery for a mass under her breast that is, thankfully, self-encapsulated. We don’t know if it is cancerous or not, so keep prayers up for her.
- We continue our prayers for Evangelist Cal Jennings, that his health becomes steadier than it has been for far too long. We pray that his medical needs are fully met, and he has all that he requires for comfort and peace.
- We continue our prayers for JB and EB as they still have no answers to their questions in regard to their health and they have no knowledge as to when their answers will be found.
- We continue to pray for a friend of ours, Alexis, who is in desperate need to improve her current situation and has set up a site for donations to help her with this. If you want more information, send me a private message and I’ll pass on the information.
- We continue with our prayers for my niece Autumn, who has been suffering seizures due to a head injury from a car crash.
- We continue to pray for all sufferers and survivors of the various types of cancer, including several survivors of the disease, JB’s sister Debbie, our friend Alexis, my Aunt Donna, and my friend Kelly.
- We pray for those who are in the path of dangerous weather, and other dangerous conditions, including volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, worldwide.
- We pray for the various outreach ministries we have joined with, with their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Pastor Amir Aneel, Sister Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, and others in Kissee, Nairobi, and other places in Kenya, Pakistan, and India.
- We pray also for our American outreach ministries, including Rev. Lisa Tyler on the other side of Georgia from where I am and Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog with her ministry, Way Maker Messianic Jewish and Christian Center – USA as well.

Sermon: Today we are completing Chapter two in 1st Corinthians. There is a lot to go over in these final six verses. Paul wants us to remember something very important about being individuals as well as being a church community. He wants us to remember that every human spirit is unique unto itself. What brings those unique individuals together is the Holy Spirit, which is identical across the board because the Holy Spirit is God as Jesus Christ is the same. They are the Three in One the Holy Trinity, and having the Holy Spirit joined with our human spirits allows us to have the connection God originally intended. Now, it’s not easy to rely fully on the Holy Spirit, this amazing gift that Jesus brought to us after the resurrection. It isn’t, for the simple fact that we are human and our human spirits are inherently earthly and sinful as a result of that. Paul is simply reminding us that it takes work to clean that part of us up and stand within righteousness. So, with that, let’s begin here.
1 Corinthians 2:11 KJV – For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
NIV – For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
Remember, I said a moment ago that each human spirit is unique to that single human being. This is true all the way back to Adam and Eve. It is such because each of us when we are born has our own breath of life at the beginning once we emerge from our mother’s womb. This holds true to each day as well, because each day is as different from the one before as tomorrow will be. Paul references Job, King David, and King Solomon along with the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah in the Old Testament with this.
Job 11:7-9 KJV – Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know? The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
NIV – “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do? They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know? Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.
Job 32:8 KJV – But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.
NIV – But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding.
Psalm 139:1-4 KJV – O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.
NIV – You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.
Proverbs 20:27 KJV – The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
NIV – The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s inmost being.
Isaiah 40:13-14 KJV – Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?
NIV – Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as his counselor? Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding?
Jeremiah 17:9-10 KJV – The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
NIV – The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
Paul adds four gospel references from Matthew and John the Beloved.
Matthew 11:27 KJV – All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
NIV – “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
John 1:18 KJV – No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
NIV – No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
John 3:8 KJV – The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
NIV – The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
John 14:17 KJV – Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
NIV – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
John 16:13 KJV – Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
NIV – But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
Paul’s final reference for this verse is from the Hebrew prophets.
Hebrews 4:12 KJV – For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
NIV – For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Next Paul points out the significant difference between the spirit of the world and God’s Holy Spirit in this next verse of his first letter to Corinth.
1 Corinthians 2:12 KJV – Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
NIV – What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.
Now again Paul references the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Joel.
Isaiah 11:2 KJV – And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;
NIV – The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
Isaiah 42:1 KJV – Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
NIV – “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.
Jeremiah 31:33 KJV – But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
NIV – “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Ezekiel 36:27 KJV – And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
NIV – And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
Joel 2:28 KJV – And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
NIV – “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
Paul turns to his fellow Apostle, John the Beloved with two references of the Word as shared by Jesus and also two references from John’s first letter to Ephesus.
John 14:26 KJV – But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
NIV – But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 16:13 KJV – Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
NIV –But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
1 John 2:20 KJV –But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
NIV –But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
1 John 2:27 KJV –But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
NIV –As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
1 John 4:13 KJV –Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
NIV –This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.
Paul now points toward the difference between Godly wisdom and human wisdom in his first letter to Corinth.
1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV – Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
NIV – This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.
Again, Paul references his go-to prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel from the Old Testament prophetic scrolls.
Isaiah 28:10-13 KJV – For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
NIV – For it is: Do this, do that, a rule for this, a rule for that; a little here, a little there.” Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people, to whom he said, “This is the resting place, let the weary rest”; and, “This is the place of repose”—but they would not listen. So then, the word of the Lord to them will become: Do this, do that, a rule for this, a rule for that; a little here, a little there—so that as they go they will fall backward; they will be injured and snared and captured.
Jeremiah 1:9 KJV – Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.
NIV – Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.
Ezekiel 3:10 KJV – Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears.
NIV – And he said to me, “Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart all the words I speak to you.
Paul only references one gospel verse from Matthew with Jesus saying this:
Matthew 10:20 KJV – For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
NIV – for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Paul then adds still more from the Hebrew prophets and another reference from John the Beloved’s first letter to Ephesus.
Hebrews 4:12 KJV –For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
NIV – For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
1 John 2:27 KJV –But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
NIV – As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
Paul wants us to discern what having only the human spirit, and a human spirit combined with the Holy Spirit would be like. This is how he describes it to the members of the church at Corinth.
1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV – But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
NIV – The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.
Paul adds still more prophetic references from Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel.
Isaiah 6:9-10 KJV – And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
NIV – He said, “Go and tell this people: “‘Be
ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ Make
the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with
their hearts, and turn and be healed.”
Jeremiah 5:21 KJV – Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
NIV – Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear:
Ezekiel 12:2 KJV – Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house.
NIV – “Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people.
He adds five gospel verses from Matthew and John the Beloved’s gospels with Jesus speaking.
Matthew 11:25 KJV – At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
NIV – At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
Matthew 13:13-15 KJV – Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
NIV – This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
John 3:19-20 KJV – And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
NIV – This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.
John 8:47 KJV – He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
NIV – Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
John 14:17 KJV –Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
NIV – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
Paul’s last references for this verse come from John the Beloved’s first letter to the church at Ephesus.
1 John 2:20-21 KJV –But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
NIV –But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
1 John 4:6 KJV –We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
NIV –We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
The final two verses from the second chapter of the first letter Paul wrote to the church at Corinth are together for several reasons. Listen to how Paul closes out this chapter.
1 Corinthians 2:15-16 KJV – But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.
NIV – The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
Paul includes only three Old Testament references from King David, the prophets Jeremiah, and Malachi.
Psalm 119:66 KJV – Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.
NIV – Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust your commands.
Jeremiah 23:18 KJV – For who hath stood in the counsel of the Lord, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it?
NIV – But which of them has stood in the council of the Lord to see or to hear his word? Who has listened and heard his word?
Malachi 3:18 KJV – Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
NIV – And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.
Paul also only includes three gospel references from Matthew and John the Beloved.
Matthew 7:1-5 KJV – Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
NIV
– “Do not judge, or you
too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you
will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no
attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your
brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a
plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out
of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your
brother’s eye.
John 7:27 KJV – Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
NIV – But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
John 15:15 KJV – Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
NIV – I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
Paul’s final references are from the Hebrew prophets and James the Just, the younger human brother of Jesus.
Hebrews 5:14 KJV – But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
NIV – But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
James 3:13-18 KJV – Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
NIV – Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
Paul gives us a whole lot of information in this chapter regarding the Holy Spirit and how different it is for us than our human spirit. Jesus promised us that we would be able to interact with Him and with God through this amazing Advocate, known to us as the Holy Spirit, in order to seek guidance, peace, patience, and all the other virtues available to us if we seek them. This is a big, big lesson for us to learn and an achievement that is a huge blessing once we understand it. It is important to remember the reason for our being here. His name is Jesus Christ, who comes from the great Jehovah God our Heavenly Father. It is through the life death, and eternal legacy of Jesus Christ that we are here today. Now, let’s show each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now, that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us.
Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
