Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our combined written and live Sunday sermon, which is normally broadcast every Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love, sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Jesus Christ in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.
- Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog has asked that we pray for her mother’s health. She also asks for prayers for her brother’s attitude and also for Rabbi Karen’s stress levels.
- We pray for all of those mourning the loss of the children and other flood victims in Texas and other places. We pray for those who are searching for the missing and the dead.
- We pray for JB’s sister Debbie, who is undergoing proton treatment for cancer at this time. We pray for JB’s mother, who is sick in the hospital right now. We pray for JB herself who has an upper respiratory infection and more and is on a powerful antibiotic. Pray she gets well in time for her flight to see her mother at the end of the week.
- We are thankful that my sister-in-law Fran’s surgery went well and she is healing well afterwards.
- We continue our prayers for Evangelist Cal Jennings, that his health becomes steadier than it has been for far too long. He has been very, very ill over the past few weeks. We pray that his medical needs are fully met, and he has all that he requires for comfort and peace.
- We continue our prayers for JB and EB as they navigate through the maze of medical tests and specialists to get all the answers that they need in both of their health issues. They are continually frustrated with the runaround they have been getting with the various referrals.
- We continue to pray for a friend of ours, Alexis, who is in desperate need to improve her current situation and has set up a site for donations to help her with this. If you want more information, send me a private message and I’ll pass on the information.
- We continue with our prayers for my niece Autumn, who has been suffering seizures due to a head injury from a car crash.
- We continue to pray for my Mama who has had a lot of anxiety issues lately. Her car ended up being totaled after the fender-bender. This combined with the fact she misses my father as he passed away three years ago due to COVID-19 has made it a tough year for her.
- We continue to pray for all sufferers and survivors of the various types of cancer, including several survivors of the disease, JB’s sister Debbie, our friend Alexis, my Aunt Donna, and my friend Kelly.
- We pray for those who are in the path of dangerous weather, and other dangerous conditions, including volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, worldwide.
- We pray for the various outreach ministries we have joined with, with their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Pastor Amir Aneel, Sister Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, and others in Kissee, Nairobi, and other places in Kenya, Pakistan, and India. Pastor Amir Aneel has asked for extra prayers and assistance for the orphans that he cares for regarding food and shelter for them.
- We pray also for our American outreach ministries, including Rev. Lisa Tyler on the other side of Georgia from where I am and Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog with her ministry, Way Maker Messianic Jewish and Christian Center – USA as well.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we have so much to be thankful for. We thank You for Your Son and His great sacrifice for each and every one of us. We thank You for each day that You bring us together. We thank You for the healing that You have managed for so many, including Fran, Kelly, and so many others. We bring to you our sick, our hungry, our dead and dying, around this world including JB, her sister Debbie, and their Mother, too. We bring You the orphans and the members of our outreach ministries worldwide that need Your intervention. We bring You the praise and thanksgiving for all that You have bestowed upon us. We pray all these things in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ through the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.
Opening Song: Wonderful Words of Life ~ a capella by Rev. Laura
Sermon: Today we are continuing with chapter 3 of 1st Corinthians. Paul is adamant that the people at the church of Corinth understand their importance in the building of the Church, the Body of Christ. In order to do this, Paul begins with these words.
1 Corinthians 3:12 KJV –Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
NIV –If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,
Anyone who has built anything understands the importance of the materials used. It can be as simple as a set of blocks for a toddler or a series of bricks for a mason. Everything that is built has to have a foundation. The church is the same. However, there are pitfalls that can occur. These are the spots that Paul is cautioning the leaders and the members of the church there at Corinth about. Paul references the writing of King Solomon, the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Malachi in the Old Testament for this.
Proverbs 17:3 KJV –The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts.
NIV – The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.
Isaiah 28:16 KJV – For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness.
NIV
– So this is what the Sovereign Lord
says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a
sure foundation;
the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.
Isaiah 60:17 KJV – For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness.
NIV – Instead of bronze I will bring you gold, and silver in place of iron. Instead of wood I will bring you bronze, and iron in place of stones. I will make peace your governor and well-being your ruler.
Jeremiah 23:29 KJV – Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?
NIV – “Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?
Malachi 3:2-3 KJV – But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.
NIV – But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,
Paul includes only a single reference from the Word of Jesus in the gospel of Matthew, two from Peter and one from John the Beloved.
Matthew 7:24-27 KJV – Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
NIV – “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
1 Peter 1:7 KJV – That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
NIV –These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
1 Peter 2:4-5 KJV –To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
NIV –As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Revelation 21:18-21 KJV –And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
NIV – The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.
There is one thing that humanity does not realize in truth. On the Last Day, Jesus will raise EVERYBODY from death to life. Once He does so, we will be JUDGED for EVERY SINGLE THING we have done, EVERY SINGLE THOUGHT we have had, EVERY SINGLE WORD we have spoken. This is Paul’s warning.
1 Corinthians 3:13 KJV – Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
NIV –their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.
Paul isn’t the first to warn humanity about what is to come in the future. This is a recurring theme throughout Scripture. We have Jesus Christ as our Savior, but we also have to remember that love one another is a literal compilation of the Ten Commandments and the prophets of the Old Testament provide us with insight on how our following the three word directive Jesus provides will manifest in our lives.
Isaiah 48:10 KJV – Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.
NIV – See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
Jeremiah 17:10 KJV – I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
NIV – “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
Zechariah 13:9 KJV – And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.
NIV – This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’”
Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,
Paul includes a direct reference to what I myself pointed toward earlier with the Word of Jesus here in the gospel of Matthew. He adds the Hebrew prophets and John the Beloved’s Revelation to these observations.
Matthew 12:36-37 KJV – But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
NIV – But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Hebrews 4:13 KJV – Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
NIV – Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Revelation 3:18 KJV – I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
NIV – I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
People in this world are all about being rewarded. However, they often don’t realize that the words “you reap what you sow” have a lot more to do with your eternity than crops in a field. This is the warning within those thoughts as shared to the church at Corinth.
1 Corinthians 3:14 KJV – If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
NIV –If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.
Paul jumps right into the gospels of Matthew and Luke before sharing insight from the Hebrew Prophets, James the Just, the younger human brother of Jesus, Peter, and John the Beloved as well.
Matthew 16:27 KJV –For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
NIV – For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
Luke 19:17 KJV – And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
NIV – “‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’
Hebrews 6:10 KJV – For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
NIV – God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
James 1:12 KJV – Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
NIV – Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
1 Peter 5:4 KJV – And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
NIV –And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
Revelation 22:12 KJV –And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
NIV – “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.
We have a mission to fulfill. That mission is to love one another as Jesus loves us. In performing this mission, we must be willing to face destruction, loss, and anything else this world might manage, because with Jesus as our Savior, and Salvation, we can survive anything so long as we have faith and believe in HIM, even a trial by fire. Paul and the Apostles proved that more than once, and it is documented in historical records.
1 Corinthians 3:15 KJV – If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
NIV –If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.
Now, Paul’s warnings are a repeat of the very same warning issued by John the Baptist, cousin to Jesus Christ, given in the gospel of Matthew.
Matthew 3:11-12 KJV –I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
NIV – “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Paul includes four other references to the Hebrew prophets, Jude, another brother of Jesus, and two references from John the Beloved.
Hebrews 10:39 KJV – But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
NIV – But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.
Jude 1:23 KJV – And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
NIV – save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.
1 John 2:28 KJV – And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
NIV –And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.
Revelation 20:12-13 KJV –And I saw the dead,
small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book
was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those
things which were written in the books, according to their works.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up
the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their
works.
NIV – And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.
Paul drives the meaning of our very existence here on this earth as the temple of God, the CHURCH of JESUS CHRIST. That includes each of us INDIVIDUALLY AND TOGETHER. Though we have different family units, we are meant to be a cohesive, connected, supportive, understanding, faithful church. It’s not easy, and it isn’t meant to be, but that is what we are supposed to be. Here is what Paul shares with the church at Corinth.
1 Corinthians 3:16 KJV – Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
NIV –Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
Paul goes all the way back to the Torah for reference here.
Leviticus 26:12 KJV –And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.
NIV – I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people.
He returns to his go to prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel as well.
Isaiah 63:11 KJV – Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?
NIV – Then his people recalled the days of old, the days of Moses and his people—where is he who brought them through the sea, with the shepherd of his flock? Where is he who set his Holy Spirit among them,
Jeremiah 31:33 KJV – But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
NIV – “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Ezekiel 36:27 KJV – And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
NIV – And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
Ezekiel 37:14 KJV – And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the Lord have spoken it, and performed it, saith the Lord.
NIV – I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.’”
Paul includes two references to the Word of Jesus from the gospel of John the Beloved.
John 14:17 KJV – Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
NIV – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
John 14:23 KJV – Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
NIV – Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
Our final verse from this third chapter of the first letter Paul wrote to Corinth is this one. Again, it is a serious warning. Listen to what he says to the leadership and members of the church there at Corinth.
1 Corinthians 3:17 KJV – If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
NIV –If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.
Paul again cites the Torah with his references.
Leviticus 19:2 KJV –Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy.
NIV – “Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: ‘Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.
He includes the words of King David and the prophet Isaiah as well.
Psalm 93:5 KJV – Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, for ever.
NIV – Your statutes, Lord, stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days.
Isaiah 56:7 KJV – Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
NIV
– these
I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their
burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar;
for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”
Paul has two references from the gospels of Matthew and John the Beloved as well.
Matthew 16:18 KJV – And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
NIV – And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
John 2:19-21 KJV – Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body.
NIV – Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three
days.”
They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are
going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken
of was his body.
His final references come from the Hebrew prophets and John the Beloved’s Revelation.
Hebrews 3:6 KJV – But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
NIV – But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.
Revelation 21:27 KJV – And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
NIV – Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
We have a lot of work to do to ensure that the walls we build in this CHURCH OF CHRIST remain strong, built of the best materials, without lies and deception, without fear and futility, without the seven troubles of vanity, envy, lust, enmity, wrath, shame, or doubt within their walls. It is vitally important to remember the reason for our being here and the necessity for understanding His instructions. His name is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who comes from the great Jehovah God our Heavenly Father. It is through the life death, and eternal legacy of Jesus Christ that we are here today. Now, let’s show each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now, that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us.
Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
