Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.
- Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog has asked that we pray for her mother’s health. She also asks for prayers for her brother’s attitude and also for Rabbi Karen’s stress levels.
- We pray for JB’s sister Debbie, who is recovering after her proton treatment for cancer at this time.
- We continue our prayers for Evangelist Cal Jennings, that his health becomes steadier than it has been for far too long. He has had a lot of little issues that make it difficult to remain comfortable and well right now.
- We continue our prayers for JB and EB through all their health hardships and through the rest of their frustrations right now.
- We continue to pray for a friend of ours, Erica, who is in desperate need to improve her current situation and has set up a site for donations to help her with this. - We continue with our prayers for my niece Autumn, who has been suffering seizures due to a head injury from a car crash.
- We continue to pray for my Mama who has had a lot of anxiety issues lately. Her car ended up being totaled after the fender-bender. This combined with the fact she misses my father as he passed away three years ago due to COVID-19 has made it a tough year for her.
- We continue to pray for all sufferers and survivors of the various types of cancer, including several survivors of the disease, JB’s sister Debbie, our friend Erica, my Aunt Donna, and my friend Kelly.
- We pray for those who are in the path of dangerous weather, including Hurricane Erin in the Atlantic Ocean right now, and other dangerous conditions, as well as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, worldwide.
- We pray for the various outreach ministries we have joined with, with their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Pastor Amir Aneel, Sister Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, Pastor Wakas Gill, and others in Kissee, Nairobi, and other places in Kenya, Pakistan, and India.

Prayer: Dear Lord God, Almighty, we thank You for this beautiful day. We thank You for all the gifts You give to each and every one of us, even when we don’t recognize them. We thank You for bringing Your Son Jesus to us here on this earth and for leaving Your Holy Spirit behind upon His ascension into heaven. We thank you for health and healing as has been seen in friends and family. We thank you for the connections of our friends and colleagues. We pray for those same family and friends who are suffering from illness or disease, hunger or homelessness, that they may be made healthy and whole and find shelter and food. We pray for those in the path of the latest hurricane in the Atlantic. We thank You for Your Protection, Your Hope, and Your Unconditional Love. We pray to You through our Savior Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Sermon: Today we are starting Chapter five in 1st Corinthians. Now this one is a taboo set of subjects even now in this world today. These subjects are incest and adultery. Regardless of how ugly and offensive this would be, we know that it continues to happen even to this very day. That’s why we need to be reminded as Paul reminds those in the church there in Corinth. With that, let’s begin here.
1 Corinthians 5:1 KJV –It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
NIV –It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.
Remember, adultery is a SIN mentioned thousands of times in Scripture. This is one of the TEN COMMANDMENTS, number six to be exact. How do we know we’ve broken this commandment? Scripture shows us exactly how that would be. Fornication is an ancient word for unlawful and unnatural sexual relationships. Sadly, we see this everywhere in the world today. Here are six excerpts from the Old Testament that Paul references.
Leviticus 8:8 KJV – And he put the breastplate upon him: also he put in the breastplate the Urim and the Thummim.
NIV – He placed the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece.
Deuteronomy 22:30 KJV – A man shall not take his father's wife, nor discover his father's skirt.
NIV – A man is not to marry his father’s wife; he must not dishonor his father’s bed.
Deuteronomy 27:20 KJV – Cursed be he that lieth with his father's wife; because he uncovereth his father's skirt. And all the people shall say, Amen.
NIV – “Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his father’s wife, for he dishonors his father’s bed.” Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”
2 Samuel 16:21-22 KJV –And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father's concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong. So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.
NIV – Ahithophel answered, “Sleep with your father’s concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be more resolute.” So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.
Ezekiel 22:10-11 KJV –That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:
NIV – In you are those who dishonor their father’s bed; in you are those who violate women during their period, when they are ceremonially unclean. In you one man commits a detestable offense with his neighbor’s wife, another shamefully defiles his daughter-in-law, and another violates his sister, his own father’s daughter.
Amos 2:7 KJV – That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:
NIV – They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name.
Now we get into the Word as spoken by Jesus in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. He adds even more clarification for the illegal breaking of commandment number six. However, Jesus adds to this with even more. Betrayal is also part of adultery, and our Savior addresses this as well.
Matthew 5:32 KJV –But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
NIV – But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Mark 10:11-12 KJV – And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
NIV – And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
Luke
16:1-8 KJV – And he said also unto
his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which
had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.
And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give
an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.
Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away
from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.
I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may
receive me into their houses.
So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first,
How much owest thou unto my lord?
And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill,
and sit down quickly, and write fifty.
Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred
measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.
And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the
children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of
light.
NIV
– Jesus told his
disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was
accused of wasting his possessions. So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is
this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot
be manager any longer.’
“The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my
job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— I know what I’ll do
so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’
“So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How
much do you owe my master?’
“‘Nine hundred gallons of olive oil,’ he replied.
“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four
hundred and fifty.’
“Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’
“‘A thousand bushels of wheat,’ he replied.
“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’
“The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For
the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than
are the people of the light.
Pride is something that is also a nasty consideration, or at least it can become one. You know the seven troubles, vanity, envy, lust, enmity, wrath, shame, and doubt. There are seven deadly sins that coincide with these. They are as follows: lust, gluttony, greed, laziness or slothfulness, wrath, envy, and pride. This is how Paul addressed this to the church at Corinth.
1 Corinthians 5:2 KJV –And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
NIV –And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?
Paul has five references from the Torah here.
Leviticus 18:29 KJV – For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people.
NIV – “‘Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people.
Deuteronomy 13:5 KJV – And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the Lord thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
NIV – That prophet or dreamer must be put to death for inciting rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. That prophet or dreamer tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you.
Deuteronomy 17:7 KJV – The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you.
NIV – The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.
Deuteronomy 19:19 KJV – Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.
NIV – then do to the false witness as that witness intended to do to the other party. You must purge the evil from among you.
Deuteronomy 21:21 KJV – And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
NIV – Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.
Paul then adds the Word from Jesus Christ to emphasize his thoughts.
Matthew 18:17 KJV – And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
NIV – If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
Something people cannot seem to understand when it comes to God and Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is their omniscience, their omnipotence, and their omnipresence. God KNOWS EVERYTHING. God is our ETERNALLY INFINITE in His existence. God is EVERYWHERE AT THE SAME TIME. These are the definitions of those three words omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. Our words, whether in letters or spoken, can be heard in many places in many ways. For instance, this live broadcast is heard here in this place, in your home or church, and anywhere else someone chooses to watch and listen to. Thus, this spreads the Word of God verbally, visually, and spiritually anywhere others might be. That’s what Paul points out next.
1 Corinthians 5:3 KJV –For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
NIV –For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this.
Now, this isn’t to say that we can just say ANYTHING we want. In the case of worship, it should only be the WORD and how it should apply to life. That’s how we don’t get in trouble we can’t get out of upon the day of judgment that will come before we may ever be ready for it. This is what Jesus says.
Matthew 18:18 KJV – Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
NIV – “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Paul adds four references to his other letters as well.
Galatians 4:20 KJV – I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
NIV – how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you!
Colossians 2:5 KJV – For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.
NIV – For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.
2 Thessalonians 3:6 KJV – Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
NIV –In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.
1 Timothy 5:20 KJV –Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
NIV –But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning.
Now, normally I don’t cut a sentence in half. This is especially if there is a lack of clarity. However, in this case, if I hadn’t these words would have been lost in translation, which, for me, is not a good thing. Paul continues with his description for doing what he has done regarding this first letter to the church at Corinth.
1 Corinthians 5:4 KJV –In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
NIV –So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present,
Paul jumps straight into the gospels with this one. It’s very important to pay attention to the words of Jesus that Paul references. There is a ton of information in all of the references for this specific verse. Please pay close attention to this reading.
Matthew 16:19 KJV –And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
NIV – I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Matthew 18:18-20 KJV – Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
NIV – “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
John 20:23 KJV – Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
NIV – If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
There is even more that Paul references in the writings of Luke in the Acts of the Apostles and specifically in the preaching and teaching that Peter does here. On display here is the direct result of breaking the Ten Commandments and also committing all of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Acts
5:1-11 KJV – But a certain man
named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a
certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy
Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in
thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast
not lied unto men, but unto God.
And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great
fear came on all them that heard these things.
And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing
what was done, came in.
And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And
she said, Yea, for so much.
Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the
Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are
at the door, and shall carry thee out.
Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the
young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by
her husband.
And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these
things.
NIV
– Now a man named
Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With
his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but
brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.
Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that
you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money
you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it
was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made
you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to
God.”
When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who
heard what had happened. Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,
and carried him out and buried him.
About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”
“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”
Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord?
Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they
will carry you out also.”
At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in
and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. Great
fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
Acts 15:28-29 KJV – For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
NIV – It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.
It is important for us to remember the Seven Troubles, and the Seven Deadly Sins and how they connect and combine to cause chaos here on this earth. To remind you, the Seven Deadly Sins are: lust, gluttony, greed, laziness or slothfulness, wrath, envy, and pride. Here is what Paul shares next.
1 Corinthians 5:5 KJV –To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
NIV –hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
Again, Paul focuses on the New Testament, beginning with the gospel of Matthew and including the Hebrew prophets, James the Just, younger human brother of Jesus, Peter and John the Beloved.
Matthew 18:17 KJV – And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
NIV – If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
Hebrews 12:6 KJV – For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
NIV – because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
James 5:20 KJV – Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
NIV – remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:6 KJV –For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
NIV – For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
1 John 5:16 KJV –If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
NIV –If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that.
Boasting is another thing, it’s a combination of two deadly sins, lust and pride. We don’t want to fall into the traps of the Seven Deadly Sins or the Seven Troubles that lead us to them. Paul points out that being excessive in glorifying anything drops us out of good faith and belief and straight into sin and corruption of our spirits and souls. This is how he shares these factors.
1 Corinthians 5:6 KJV –Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
NIV –Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough?
Paul goes straight to the Word of Jesus in three of the four gospels.
Matthew 16:6 KJV – Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
NIV –“Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
Matthew 16:11-12 KJV – How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
NIV – How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Mark 8:15 KJV – And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
NIV – “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
Luke 12:1 KJV – In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
NIV – Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Paul concludes his references with writings from the Hebrew prophets and the younger human brother of Jesus known as James the Just.
Hebrews 12:15 KJV – Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
NIV – See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
James 3:5 KJV – Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
NIV – Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
Seven Deadly Sins share the path toward eternal death and destruction with Seven Terrible Troubles. These are our stumbling stones here on earth. We are faced with each and every one of them on a minute-to-minute basis to this very day. However, there is a way out of this rut. His name is Jesus Christ. All we need to remember to do is pray about it because it is important to remember the reason for our being here. His name is Jesus Christ, who comes from the great Jehovah God our Heavenly Father. It is through the life death, and eternal legacy of Jesus Christ that we are here today. Now, let’s show each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
