Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our combined written and live Sunday sermon, which is normally broadcast every Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love, sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Jesus Christ in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Prayer List: We have many on our prayer list. Some wish to remain anonymous, and others only wish to have their first names mentioned. Our prayer list grows or changes every week. This is our current list.

-      Evangelist Cal Jennings continues healing from his latest stint in the hospital just last week. He is home, thankfully, but keep praying for his health and healing.

-      David Doyle, brother-in-law of Evangelist Cal Jennings, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. David is a preacher of the Word as well, and this is a new challenge for him and Cal’s sister and their family to experience this close to Christmas. Please keep all of them in prayer during this journey.

-      We continue to pray for JB & EB’s neighbor Jerry who is healing after completing his prostate cancer treatment.

-      We bring JB’s sister Debbie back into prayer as she has now been diagnosed with Lymphoma after conquering two rounds of breast cancer.

-      We continue to pray for my sister-in-law Fran who is fighting cancer and has been hospitalized this week as a result.

-      We continue our prayers for JB and EB as they navigate through the maze of medical tests and specialists to get all the answers that they need in both of their health issues. They are continually frustrated with the runaround they have been getting with the various referrals. JB has been especially sick, losing weight way too fast and no complete solution in sight at the moment. She has been sick with pneumonia, an ear infection, and more health chaos for the past week and is still not doing well even with a full week of rest.

-      We continue to pray for a friend of ours, Alexis, who is in desperate need to improve her current situation and is seeking to sell things she owns to help her with this. If you want more information, send me a private message and I’ll pass on the information.

-      We bring praises and thanksgiving after learning that my niece Autumn has had her medications changed and the seizures and more are completely controlled at this point in time.

-      We continue to pray for my Mama who has had a lot of anxiety issues lately after the loss of my sister four months ago. These anxiety issues are really devastating for her and for the family, so please keep all of them in prayer.

-      We continue to pray for all sufferers and survivors of the various types of cancer, including several survivors of the disease, JB’s sister Debbie, our friend Alexis, my Aunt Donna, and my friend Kelly.

-      We pray for those who are in the path of dangerous weather, and other dangerous conditions, including wildfires, storms, flooding, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, worldwide.

-      We pray for the various outreach ministries we have joined with, with their leaders, Pastor Stephen Okoth, Pastor Simon Peter Javaji, Pastor Amir Aneel, Sister Santhi Swaroopa, Pastor Duke Moenga, and others in Kissee, Nairobi, and other places in Kenya, Pakistan, and India.

-      We pray also for our American outreach ministries, including Rev. Lisa Tyler on the other side of Georgia from where I am and Rabbi Karen L. Hertzog with her ministry, Way Maker Messianic Jewish and Christian Center – USA as well.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we have so much and so many to pray for. We pray for all those who are affected by the storms that are raging around the world. We pray for those who have no shelter. We pray for those who have no food or water. We pray that they receive the miracles of Your peace and comfort Lord. We pray for Evangelist Cal Jennings, and his health as he has been quite ill. We pray for JB who has also been quite ill for the past three weeks with pneumonia and more. We pray for David and all the others suffering or having suffered from cancer. We pray for those who have survived cancer. We pray for Fran who has been in the hospital. We pray for all those who have lost loved ones in the past week, or who are remembering those who were lost in the past during this month or had remembered birthdays. We pray for all of our outreach ministries and their memberships. We pray for the orphans and the hungry. We pray for all the world that peace shall one day reign in full thanks to the glory of God through our Savior Jesus Christ in the gift of the Holy Spirit, Amen and so it shall be.

Opening Song: Doxology

Sermon: Today we continue with our study of 1 Corinthians. We are continuing our study of the ninth chapter. Paul continues to instruct the church there at Corinth regarding what is expected as a minister of Christ. It’s not easy being a minister because His work gets done before anything else that we as humans may require. Yet, people cannot expect us to exist without means to do so, as we are all human, even as ministers for Yeshua Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father. Paul makes some interesting comparisons with this first verse to start us off.

1 Corinthians 9:7 KJV –Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

NIV –Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk?

Paul has Scriptures from all over the place in the Old and New Testaments to give us further understanding of what he means in his letter here to Corinth. Let’s go with the Old Testament.

Numbers 18:21 KJV – And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

NIV – “I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting.

Numbers 18:31 KJV – And ye shall eat it in every place, ye and your households: for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation.

NIV – You and your households may eat the rest of it anywhere, for it is your wages for your work at the tent of meeting.

Deuteronomy 25:4 KJV – Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn.

NIV – Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.

Paul continues with the Poetic and Prophetic Scrolls of the Old Testament.

Proverbs 3:9-10 KJV – Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

NIV – Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Proverbs 27:18 KJV – Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

NIV – The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit, and whoever protects their master will be honored.

Isaiah 7:22 KJV – And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.

NIV – And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds and honey.

Paul adds still more with the Word of Jesus in the gospel of John the Beloved and the writings of Luke in the Acts of the Apostles.

John 21:15-17 KJV – So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

NIV – When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.”

Acts 20:28 KJV – Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

NIV – Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

Paul again is reinforcing the divine authority by which he works. This is something that we as ministers of God and Yeshua Jesus Christ must continuously work to portray truthfully, honestly, humbly, because we work for Him, not ourselves. It’s a challenge, and it wasn’t much different in the days when Paul walked this earth. Every single day we must remember to shed our human failings and bear the cross of Yeshua Jesus Christ to portray His glory properly.

1 Corinthians 9:8 KJV –Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?

NIV –Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing?

Here are three Old Testament points of view from the Torah, Poetic and Prophetic Scrolls.

Leviticus 19:18 KJV – Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.

NIV – “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.

Psalm 119:105 KJV – Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

NIV – Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

Isaiah 28:10 KJV – For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

NIV – For it is: Do this, do that, a rule for this, a rule for that; a little here, a little there.”

Paul continues with a reflection on written historical proof of the law as written by Moses here in this next verse.

1 Corinthians 9:9 KJV –For it is written in the law of Moses, thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?

NIV –For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” Is it about oxen that God is concerned?

Paul again returns to the Torah and the Poetic Scrolls as well.

Exodus 23:12 KJV – Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.

NIV – “Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed.

Leviticus 19:13 KJV – Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

NIV – “‘Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. “‘Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight.

Proverbs 12:10 KJV – A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

NIV – The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.

Paul includes the Word as shared by Luke and also insights from the Hebrew prophets and James the Just, younger human brother of Yeshua Jesus Christ.

Luke 6:38 KJV – Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

NIV – Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Hebrews 10:28 KJV – He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

NIV – Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

James 5:4 KJV – Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.

NIV – Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.

Paul continues with his explanation of why Jesus taught the way He taught. He also reiterates the reason that he, himself, teaches this way. His portrayal of hope is something we Ministers of the Word want to see reflected in our congregations. Hope is a vital element of faith and belief that is often elusive and also very, very difficult to maintain.

1 Corinthians 9:10 KJV –Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

NIV –Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest.

Paul has three Old Testament references from the Torah and Poetic Scrolls.

Genesis 3:19 KJV – In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

NIV – By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Proverbs 3:9-10 KJV – Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

NIV – Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Ecclesiastes 11:6 KJV – In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.

NIV – Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.

Paul adds three gospel references from Matthew, Luke, and John the Beloved’s points of view as we hear the Word as shared by Yeshua Jesus Christ.

Matthew 24:22 KJV – And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

NIV – If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.

Luke 17:7-8 KJV – But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?
And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?

NIV – “Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’?

John 4:35-38 KJV – Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

NIV – Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

Now we’re going to get into the reasons that Paul wants us to see our spiritual selves more often than our carnal selves. It’s a challenge to deny our carnal, or human, desires. This is especially true in a seriously materialistic world in which we live. That is one thing that hasn’t changed much, even with modern technology in the mix. Here is what Paul says next.

1 Corinthians 9:11 KJV – If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

NIV –If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?

Again, Paul references the Torah and Prophetic Scrolls of the Old Testament.

Numbers 18:8-12 KJV – And the Lord spake unto Aaron, Behold, I also have given thee the charge of mine heave offerings of all the hallowed things of the children of Israel; unto thee have I given them by reason of the anointing, and to thy sons, by an ordinance for ever.
This shall be thine of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every oblation of their's, every meat offering of their's, and every sin offering of their's, and every trespass offering of their's which they shall render unto me, shall be most holy for thee and for thy sons.
10 In the most holy place shalt thou eat it; every male shall eat it: it shall be holy unto thee.
11 And this is thine; the heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel: I have given them unto thee, and to thy sons and to thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: every one that is clean in thy house shall eat of it.
12 All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer unto the Lord, them have I given thee.

NIV – Then the Lord said to Aaron, “I myself have put you in charge of the offerings presented to me; all the holy offerings the Israelites give me I give to you and your sons as your portion, your perpetual share. You are to have the part of the most holy offerings that is kept from the fire. From all the gifts they bring me as most holy offerings, whether grain or sin, or guilt offerings, that part belongs to you and your sons. 10 Eat it as something most holy; every male shall eat it. You must regard it as holy.
11 “This also is yours: whatever is set aside from the gifts of all the wave offerings of the Israelites. I give this to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it.
12 “I give you all the finest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain they give the Lord as the firstfruits of their harvest.

Nehemiah 13:10-12 KJV – And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.
11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.
12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

NIV – I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them, and that all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields. 11 So I rebuked the officials and asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?” Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts.
12 All Judah brought the tithes of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms.

Malachi 3:8-10 KJV – Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

NIV – “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.
“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’
“In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

Paul includes three references to the New Testament Scrolls, including the writings of Luke and also his letters to Galatia and Timothy of Lystra.

Acts 20:33-35 KJV – I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel. 34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.
35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

NIV – I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. 34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. 35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Galatians 6:6 KJV – Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

NIV –Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.

1 Timothy 5:17-18 KJV –Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
18 For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

NIV – The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.”

Our final verse today in the scroll of 1 Corinthians reiterates everything Paul has already said in the other verses. He wants to let them know there at Corinth that his work with them is rightfully considered work, not just words on paper or visits with them. This is what all of ministry should look like. We work for the people who surround us. This means ministering to the minds, hearts, spirits, and bodies of those who fill our churches, whether physical or spiritual. This is how Paul shares this.

1 Corinthians 9:12 KJV –If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

NIV – If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.

One Torah reference and one Prophetic reference from the prophet Nehemiah are included in this explanation.

Genesis 24:56 KJV – And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.

NIV – But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master.”

Nehemiah 4:8 KJV – And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

NIV – They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it.

Paul adds three Gospel references here.

Matthew 10:8 KJV – Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

NIV – Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

Matthew 17:24-27 KJV – And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

NIV – After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”
25 “Yes, he does,” he replied.
When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?”
26 “From others,” Peter answered.
“Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him. 27 “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

Luke 11:52 KJV – Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

NIV – “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”

Paul reminds us that ministry is a huge responsibility, but His love is not the only reward or gift possible. Everyone who has faith and belief to pursue the work involved in ministry has a responsibility to ensure that those who listen and hear are gaining the authenticity of the TRUE WORD, and not opinions or guesses. That’s one of our strictest rules and regulations. We must pursue ministry through honest faith and belief and portray that with our congregations, and, no matter what anyone thinks, this is a challenge in the world that we live in, no matter what part of this world that would be. We have to remember the importance of keeping the light, life, and legacy of Yeshua Jesus Christ alive even now. It is through the life death, and eternal legacy of Jesus Christ that we are here today. Now, let’s show each other how faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now, that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us.

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
