Opening Song: Joy to the World https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30OaM6b48k8

Sermon: This is the second Sunday in Advent, the season of the year where we celebrate the memory of the event of the millennium two thousand and twenty-three years ago. This celebration is in remembrance of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, brought into this world by the Virgin Mary, His mother, and Joseph, His earthly father. For this week we are going to focus primarily on the first chapter of the gospel of Luke. There are quite a few excerpts from Scripture that should be shared with you here and now. We’ll start at the beginning. Here we learn about the birth of one of the many significant people in all of the gospels. His name would be John the Baptist who was the cousin of Jesus Christ, born to Mary’s cousin Elizabeth.

Luke 1:1-13 KJV – Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

NIV –Introduction

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,
just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.
With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.
Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.
But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,
he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.
But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.

This is incredible, inconceivable news for Zechariah and Elizabeth because they were not young. Much like Abraham and his wife Sarah, the two were hardly of the typical age to bring a new baby into their lives. Now, there are quite a few verses that connect with this passage in Luke. They are not in order because they focus on each verse differently. This will be a reoccurring theme throughout the sermons from now through Epiphany. With that, here’s what God led me to share.

Acts 1:3 KJV – To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

NIV – After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

Acts 10:39 KJV – And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:

NIV – “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,

In the writings of Luke, both his gospel and the Acts of the Apostles point out several key points in the life of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The way that these verses connect to the passage in the first chapter of Luke are intriguing, just listen to what else connected with this.

Hebrews 2:3 KJV – How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

NIV – how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

It is important in your journey toward fully embracing the gift of God’s unconditional love through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to know how everything began and from as many points of view as possible. Here we see where John the Beloved’s gospel would bring another point of view.

John 20:31 KJV – But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

NIV – But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

There are hundreds, literally hundreds of connections we can make with the first chapter of the gospel of Luke. For the birth of a savior, you must have a family line to draw from. Remember, God promised Adam, Noah, Abraham, David, and many others that there would be salvation after a long, hard road filled with lessons that were learned, unlearned, and relearned in the two millennia and two decades, and three years since the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. Some of those lessons are quite painful. We see this in these excerpts.

1 Chronicles 24:1 KJV –Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

NIV –These were the divisions of the descendants of Aaron: The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

Leviticus 21:13 KJV – And he shall take a wife in her virginity.

NIV – “‘The woman he marries must be a virgin.

What, or rather, who, is the focus of all of this? His name is Jesus Christ, also known by a long, long, list of names, Emmanuel, Savior, and more. Every miracle has a moment where they come into being. Jesus and His birth was a miracle known as an Immaculate Conception. His birth was, in all senses of the word, a miracle of magnificent proportions. Here Jesus is introduced to three very special people who proclaimed the glorious events to all who would listen.

Matthew 2:1 KJV – Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

NIV – After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem

The appearance of the Magi, and the shepherds from the fields, were significant because every miracle of epic proportions had to be witnessed in those days. Remember, Jesus said For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. This is a concept that is carried throughout Scripture, but it carries quite a lot of weight in the words Jesus shares because, in this case, it would be the Holy Spirit, a gift from both God and Jesus, which connects us, even to this very moment and time, with the Father and the Son, as promised all the way back in the days of Adam and Eve. Here we see other views of this connection.

Judges 6:22 KJV – And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the Lord, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord God! for because I have seen an angel of the Lord face to face.

NIV – When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”

Daniel 10:8 KJV – Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength.

NIV – So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless.

Now we’ll go back to the first chapter in the Gospel of Luke. Each and every person who believes already and also those who have just learned about our Lord and Savior, should participate in rejoicing over His birth, because it reminds us that promises, especially those from God, are meant to be kept. All heartfelt promises should be. God has not, nor will He ever, abandon us. Jesus proves that even today. Here is the next portion of this chapter. It relates to the angel that told both Mary and Joseph what to expect upon the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ.

Luke 1:14-17 KJV – And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

NIV – He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,
for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.
He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.
And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

Purity is something that was held in great importance in the days of Mary and Joseph as well as their ancestors. We see this in these reference verses. Added to that, we see the extent to which we should regard God’s knowledge of each and every human being on this earth. To the last cell in our bodies, the last hair upon our heads, God knows all of us to the smallest details. It’s something that is both comforting and intimidating because most human beings can’t fathom that much knowledge about themselves, or anyone else, for that matter. It is important to follow the teachings God has, and that’s why these references are here today.

Judges 13:14 KJV – She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.

NIV – She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, nor drink any wine or other fermented drink nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”

Jeremiah 1:5 KJV – Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

NIV – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Malachi 4:5-6 KJV – Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:
And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

NIV – “See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”

Now, added to this we have to move closer to the point of the life of our Savior Jesus Christ, and His human cousin, John the Baptist. It is incredibly important to recognize both of them, because they have been seen through the eyes of their ancestors for many centuries at that point in time. Here is the view of John the Baptist and his impact through the eyes of the gospel writers Matthew and Mark.

Matthew 3:1-2 KJV – In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

NIV – In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea
and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Matthew 11:14 KJV – And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

NIV – And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

Mark 1:4 KJV – John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

NIV – And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

Now, the miracle of Immaculate Conception with Mary had to have a fully human counterpart. In this case, it would be His earthly cousin, born a very short time before Jesus would have been. Here is Luke’s recounting of that moment in time.

Luke 1:18-25 KJV – And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

NIV – Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.
Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple.
When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
When his time of service was completed, he returned home.
After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion.
“The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

For this set of verses there are only two references. Both of them point out how the Jews were required to behave around the temple, and in any home throughout the kingdom.

2 Kings 11:5 KJV –And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king's house;

NIV –He commanded them, saying, “This is what you are to do: You who are in the three companies that are going on duty on the Sabbath—a third of you guarding the royal palace,

Isaiah 4:1 KJV – And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

NIV – In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, “We will eat our own food and provide our own clothes; only let us be called by your name. Take away our disgrace!”

Remember, Jesus Christ is known, to this day, as our Redeemer. He is our Savior. He came into this world in the most unique way possible. Here is the first knowledge of this Immaculate Conception as shared by the angel of God Gabriel to the Virgin Mary.

Luke 1:26-38 KJV – And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
For with God nothing shall be impossible.
And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

NIV – In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,
to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.
You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.
For no word from God will ever fail.”
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Much like Abraham and Sarah, and Elizabeth with Zacharias, Mary and Joseph were astonished to the point of shock and disbelief. They epitomized exactly how human beings feel even to this day, that it is impossible to do this or that. We always are forgetting the fact that “With God ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!” Jesus Himself told us this in Matthew chapter 19. But we have other proof of this fact, some of it found all the way back in the scroll of Daniel and is also seen in the words from the prophets Isaiah, Samuel and proven in the Acts of the Apostles, and many others far back in the Old Testament.

Daniel 9:23 KJV – At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.

NIV – As soon as you began to pray, a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed. Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:

Isaiah 7:14 KJV – Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

NIV – Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

2 Samuel 7:14-17 KJV –I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

NIV –I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.
But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’”
Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

Acts 2:33 KJV – Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

NIV – Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

Acts 7:55 KJV – But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

NIV – But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

Matthew 1:20 KJV – But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

NIV – But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 2:7 KJV – I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

NIV – I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father.

Matthew 3:17 KJV – And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

NIV – And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Genesis 18:14 KJV – Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

NIV – Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

There are miracles seen and shared in this world every single moment of every single day. I’ve seen quite a few in this week alone. If you think about it, you most likely have seen at least one just this morning. Faith and belief in God go hand in hand, and all of us have the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
