Welcome to Covenant of Hope Ministries and our combined written and live Sunday sermon. You will normally see us posted in written and live form on Sunday. I am Rev. Laura A. Neff. Our ministry was built on the truth of God’s love and sharing the Word of God, the Spirit of Christ Jesus in a way that we believe embraces the ways Jesus taught us to manage. We bring His Word to the many as opposed to the few, in order to continue the legacy created by the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Sermon: Today we are completing the eleventh chapter of Romans. There is a lot, and I mean that literally, a lot of information to get through so we’re going to begin where we left off last week.

Romans 11:26 KJV – And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

NIV – and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.

God promised a method toward full salvation long ago, all the way back to Adam and Eve. His promise became what is considered a covenant promise in the days of Noah, and continued on through Moses, King David, King Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and on through until the birth of Jesus Christ as shared in the four gospels. With it being the season of Advent and the anticipation of finally reaching the moment where Jesus Christ will return and redeem all those who believe in Him, it’s something to learn what it means to hold a covenant promise like the one God made with many of the leaders found in Scripture. But first, I want to define what covenant means and why it is more important than just an ordinary everyday promise.

Covenant is defined as:

1.   an agreement or promise, usually formal, between two or more people or groups to do or not do something specified.

2.   Law. a secondary clause in a legal contract.

3.   Ecclesiastical. a solemn agreement between the members of a Christian church to act together in harmony with the precepts of the gospel.

4.   Bible.

·         any of the promises made by God at different times, such as those made to Noah, Abraham, or David and their descendants, or the new covenant inaugurated by Christ.

·         the agreement between God and the ancient Israelites, in which God promised to bless and protect them if they faithfully kept the law God gave them.

5.   Law.

·         a formal agreement of legal validity, especially one under seal.

·         an early English form of lawsuit involving sealed contracts.

This is the reason we have the name of our ministry. I made a promise to God long, long ago, to serve Him in a way He requested me to manage. I hope that I have lived up to this promise made and pray to continue to do so for as long as God believes I must do so. Now, there are others who held covenants with God. Here are two men who are quoted quite often in Paul’s letters, the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah.

Isaiah 45:17 KJV – But Israel shall be saved in the Lord with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end.

NIV – But Israel will be saved by the Lord with an everlasting salvation; you will never be put to shame or disgraced, to ages everlasting.

Isaiah 59:20 KJV – And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.

NIV – “The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,” declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 31:1 KJV – At the same time, saith the Lord, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.

NIV – “At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.”

Jeremiah 31:37 KJV – Thus saith the Lord; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the Lord.

NIV – This is what the Lord says: “Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below be searched out will I reject all the descendants of Israel because of all they have done,” declares the Lord.

Paul adds to this with a reference from the prophet Joel and also from the gospel of Matthew. With them he adds the writings of Luke in the Acts of the Apostles and Paul’s letter written to Titus.

Joel 2:32 KJV – And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

NIV – And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.

Matthew 1:21 KJV – And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

NIV – She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Acts 3:26 KJV – Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

NIV – When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

Titus 2:14 KJV – Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

NIV – who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

Paul now uses the word covenant, and means it literally, as an extension of Jesus Christ, who commissioned all the Apostles to be preachers and teachers of His Word as God taught and as Jesus focused that teaching. Here is how Paul conveys that message.

Romans 11:27 KJV – For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

NIV – And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.”

A lot of people have asked me if promises that are made should always be kept. Promises to God and Jesus should always be made when we know that we can keep them. God knows we are all human. He ensured that we each would be unique yet similar at the same time. He ensured that we all would have one of the greatest gifts ever given. That gift is “FREE WILL”, which was given first to Adam and Eve. We have the “CHOICE” to accept God and Jesus or not. We have the “CHOICE” to preach and teach the Gospel and the Scriptures as a whole, or not. We have the “CHOICE” to be His children and study the Word as it is written from Genesis to Revelation. This is the subject of these connected verses here.

Isaiah 27:9 KJV – By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, the groves and images shall not stand up.

NIV – By this, then, will Jacob’s guilt be atoned for, and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin: When he makes all the altar stones to be like limestone crushed to pieces, no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing.

Isaiah 59:21 KJV – As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.

NIV – “As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the Lord.

Jeremiah 31:33-34 KJV – But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

NIV – “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Hebrews 8:10-12 KJV – For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

NIV – This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

It was very difficult to preach Christianity to people in the days of the Roman Empire. All of the Apostles had prices on their heads with the rulers of Israel, and of Rome as well. It was a perilous life for these men and all of their families. It was equally perilous for those who were baptized into the Christian faith from where they were all throughout the known world at that time. This is spoken of in Paul’s next words.

Romans 11:28 KJV – As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the father's sakes.

NIV – As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,

Paul again draws inspiration from the Torah and the Word as spoken by Jesus Christ in the gospel of Matthew.

Deuteronomy 7:8 KJV – But because the Lord loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

NIV – But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Deuteronomy 10:15 KJV – Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.

NIV – Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today.

Matthew 21:43 KJV – Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

NIV – “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

God’s gracious gifts are free to accept, and they come willingly from the hand of God through the Word as spoken by Jesus Christ. This is what Paul points out here.

Romans 11:29 KJV – For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

NIV – for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.

One thing that was not as easy to convey was the fact that God is not, and has never been, human. He created humanity in His image, but is not a physical being. God is spirituality made manifest through Jesus Christ. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are of one mind, one spirit, together because they have always been. No, this doesn’t mean that this Triune, or Holy Trinity, of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, are in the form of ghosts or any of that hype. We see this mentioned in these connecting verses that Paul shares.

Numbers 23:19 KJV – God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

NIV – God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

Hosea 13:14 KJV – I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

NIV – “I will deliver this people from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. Where, O death, are your plagues? Where, O grave, is your destruction? “I will have no compassion,

Malachi 3:6 KJV – For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

NIV – “I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

God cannot be changed. Jesus Christ cannot be changed. The Holy Spirit cannot be changed. They are the same today as they were in the beginning and will continue to be the same as they were far into the future. Belief and Faith are our prerequisites to get us to living an eternal life with Jesus Christ as our guide. They are not interchangeable, and you can’t have one without the other. Here is how Paul references that with his first letter to Corinth, and his letter to Ephesus.

1 Corinthians 1:26 KJV –For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

NIV –Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.

Ephesians 1:18 KJV – The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

NIV – I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,

Ephesians 4:1-4 KJV – I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

NIV – As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;

The past is the past. It has been overcome if you have chosen Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. The past is the past. Jesus Christ paid for all the sinning that has ever been managed and all that will happen until the Second Coming. This is what Paul is alluding to here in this next verse of the letter to Rome.

Romans 11:30 KJV – For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:

NIV – Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience,

Paul only references two scriptures with these words. Those from his letter to Titus and also the Hebrew prophets.

Titus 3:3 KJV – For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

NIV – At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.

Hebrews 3:18 KJV – And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

NIV – And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?

Obedience, what does it mean to be obedient to God? Obedience should emanate from a commitment to live a holy life before God and others in the covenant community, and a divine call, urging a total love for God that results in unhesitating obedience to his will. This comes from Baker's Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology - Obedience which you can look up online. Another great reference is Strongs Exhaustive Concordance, which I recommend to anyone really wanting to study the Scriptures also found online. Here is Paul’s next paragraph.

Romans 11:31-32 KJV – Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

NIV – so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

Paul again references the gospel of John the Beloved and also the Word as shared by Jesus. He adds to that with his letters to Galatia and Timothy.

John 1:7 KJV – The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

NIV – He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.

John 12:32 KJV – And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

NIV – And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

Galatians 3:22-23 KJV – Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.

NIV – But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

1 Timothy 2:4-6 KJV –Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

NIV –who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.

What is one thing everyone has a tough time letting go of or wanting more of? Money. In the kingdom of God there is no need for money. Many times we have heard the reference that money is the root of all evil. Unfortunately, even in Scriptural times, money was an issue everywhere in every point of view. Paul wants us to look past money and all the issues that come with it. Sure, we need it to get food, clothes, and all the rest, but it shouldn’t rule the roost. God should, always. Here is how Paul puts it.

Romans 11:33 KJV – O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

NIV – Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!

Now, in the poetic scrolls, Job is one of those who is an unfortunate soul who gets caught in the crossfire between God and Satan. It’s not a good place for poor Job, and it takes him a long, long, time to figure out that God wants him to obey, no matter the circumstances. These are Paul’s references in the life of Job.

Job 5:9 KJV – Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:

NIV – He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.

Job 11:7 KJV – Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

NIV – “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?

Job 15:8 KJV – Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

NIV – Do you listen in on God’s council? Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?

Job 37:23 KJV – Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.

NIV – The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power; in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress.

Paul’s next questions can be taken as rhetorical or literal. Now, rhetorical doesn’t necessarily need an answer to the question. However, a literal one does require such. Listen closely.

Romans 11:34-35 KJV – For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

NIV – “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?”

What is the adage, you do this for me, and I’ll do that for you? This is one thing people don’t see or understand in their lives because things don’t manifest on our time, but on God’s, as the Creator of time itself. We might believe we “need” whatever it might be right then and there, but that doesn’t mean it will be good for us once we have it. The Lord God directs the Holy Spirit, and Jesus Christ leads us toward God. Here we see the references that Paul points toward from the prophet Isaiah, and the Lord Jesus in His words as written by the gospel writer Matthew. Paul adds to this with his first letter to Corinth.

Isaiah 40:13 KJV – Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him?

NIV – Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as his counselor?

Matthew 20:15 KJV – Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

NIV – Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

1 Corinthians 2:16 KJV –For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.

NIV –for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

The last verse in this chapter of Romans Paul points out one specific diagram of the Holy Trinity along with creation and eternal life, all at once.

Romans 11:36 KJV – For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

NIV – For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.

To God be the glory! Not just for the moment, but forever. Paul connects this with his first letter to the church at Corinth, and his letters to Galatia, Ephesus, and Philippi.

1 Corinthians 11:12 KJV –For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.

NIV –For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.

Galatians 1:5 KJV – To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

NIV – to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:21 KJV – Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

NIV – to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Ephesians 4:6 KJV – One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

NIV – one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Philippians 4:20 KJV – Now unto God and our Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

NIV – To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Paul wants everyone to understand that it takes work to understand the power of God and how that power is meant to help us, not hurt us. His love is such that He will comfort you even in the worst of times. He always has a method to help us get out of situations that are bad for us. He always has a method to bring hope to the weary and worn. In this world today, hope is something everyone has difficulty finding. Look to the Lord and He will show you hope. Everyone has the opportunity to walk in the faithful steps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ability to do this requires us to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you are willing to do so, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll be in touch. Now that’s something to think about as we pray in the prayer that Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13)
